I am confused..... Because I said my expected salary based on my last salary salary. And new company do gave me something more than old one. But very recently I got to know another colleague who joined with me and a fresher .... She got 8000 more than my salary. When I asked her what was your expected salary she said .. she didn't say anything, just said whatever they give. Now I am really disturbed

Well , I disagree with the salary expectation part .. whenever an interviewer ask me about salary expectation.. I explain what was my last ctc and I always say something above that (a range ) , because whenever we r shifting our job ..it's coz we r looking for better opportunity. My first job offered 4 lpa and for next job they gave 4.5(where I said my expectations are around 4.5 to 5) then for next company it was 5.6 (where I said my expectations are around 5 to 6 lpa)and I am again shifting my job so I expect more .....so I believe we should never hesitate to talk about salary expectation ,incase a company can't give us the salary which we expect..that's not the company for us . So I don't think we should fear rejection because of salary expectation.because we all r doing job to make a living ,that is the ultimate goal.

At least in some cases, the company standard will be better than what you are expecting. In such cases, HR will consider your range and fix it there. So that will be a disadvantage for you.

Salary part I disagree, we can definitely tell a range based on your experience, skills, market standards etc. When I told my salary expectations, they always tell me whether it is within their budget or not. We need not settle for a low salary.

The advantage of not revealing your expected salary at first is that 1) they may offer much more than your expectations, happens in many sectors where there is a supply demand gap 2) even if they offer lesser than your expectations, you still have a chance to tell them your expected salary that time. So you don’t loose either ways. However your approach to this is also correct.

Well... i disagree with salary expectations part... i think u should share your expectation. Otherwise mostly they will give less. Altlest in our field it is so... and most important we shouldn't be too diplomatic with all questions. Of course, if u say u had a problem with your manager, it will make u sound like a difficult person to work with. But if your salary is way less than industry standard, there is nothing wrong in saying it.

Based on my experience with a couple of interviews I attended, whenever they asked me about my salary expectation before the interview, I will say let me complete the interview first, and based on the company, interview experience, and work type will have a discussion on the same and they will mention as open for discussion in the salary section. Post interview during the HR round, he/she asks me about salary first thing I will say open for discussion, could you please let me know what is the percentage offering from the company end? and if it's as per my expectations I will say yes, if not I will start the discussion with expectation. I felt based on my experience this was a better way compared to other experiments I did in the past. Because some companies will reject when you 30%-50% hike or we will put a digit like 12L or 15L etc.
