I learned this voicing a while ago but didn't know how to connect it and apply it to other chord types. Thank you very much for this wealth of info!

Excellent lesson, guidance, and analysis. The first example sounded like Bill Evans' "Peri's Scop," or adptable to I mean ? On "My Little Blue Suede SAhoes, " these voicings n your hahds sound terriffic. MUCH THanks !

Maybe this is nitpicky, but I prefer (and find it's much easier) to put 3 notes in the left hand and 2 in the right, as opposed to 2 in the left and 3 in the right. This way, when you solo, you already have a 3 note shape in your left hand to use.

Great suggestion! That's indeed a very good idea to practice these voicings with 3 notes in the LH. When I first learned "So What" I learned the voicing with 2 notes in the LH, and since there are also a lot of other comping voicings with 2 notes in the LH (for example: guide tones), I automatically play these voicings with 2 notes in the LH.. But thanks a lot for the input!

My ear tells me that everything you do works wonderfully, but my brain struggles to understand how an F-7 So What voicing acts as a G7 (at 1:13). The Bb and the C imply heavily that it's a G-7, not a dominant. Is this a case where a minor chord is substituted for the dominant? One of the tenets I've heard repeated many times is that a minor V (in a minor ii-v-i for example) just doesn't resolve as well as a dominant chord; seems like it's even more true in a major ii-V-I. Or maybe the point is that you're actually skipping the G7 entirely?

Hi, I think there are multiple answers to your question: 1) playing the F-7 instead of G7 actually is a common reharmonization. It's called "backdoor resolution" and is often used in standards: instead of Dm7 / G7 / Cmaj7 you would play Dm7 / Fm7 Bb7 / Cmaj7 (the Fm7 = minor subdominant). 2) playing an F-7 voicing on G sounds like G phrygian: the Ab, Bb, and Eb in the F- voicing are the 3 flats in the G phrygian scale. It is also a "common" reharm technique (changing the collor of the chord) 3) in the actual example I more or less ignored the G7 and played the Fm So What voicing as a chromatic approach to the Em So What voicing on Cmaj7. 4) we can use the So What voicing as a "constant structure" randomly moving up and down (in that case you would ignore the actual II V I, but keep the form). The top notes will then sound as a "melody", even though the chords wouldn't match the II V I you are playing.. Hope this was of help!
