I've been creating KZbin content for about 7 years alongside my commercial photography business and workshops. At the start of this year, I decided to go all in to concentrate on KZbin, landscapes and workshops. It's a little daunting leaving a commercial photography business that I had spent so many years building, but sometimes you've just got to follow your dreams. So a big thanks to everyone who supports and follows my work, I couldn't do this without you. www.iworthphotos.com

Since 2017 I pretty much did only the things I liked. Pretty much as you want to do now. One thing I would say is that sometimes it may be hard on the income part, but honestly I do not think I had one single day with ought a smile on my face. Good luck with all you want to concentrate on. I think is worth it... plus that I like the videos so, more to watch 😁.

I have that bad habit of enjoying the moment and the place a bit too much... then I am too lazy to take a photo. So I keep enjoying the view 😁.

@@trevorpayne2749 I guess it is as they say... no one is perfect 😁. But nothing can stop us to notice the mistakes and improve little by little.

Something I do when I get to a scene and I'm a pretty experienced landscape photographer now and I actually teach this to my students that I take out as well is when you get to the scene put your bag down just stand in the middle of it and close your eyes for about 10 or 15 seconds just have a good look first but then close your eyes and embrace the beauty of it. This technique is simply mindfulness based and it gets to ground your thoughts. We often get to scenes and we start running around looking for compositions if you get your brain into a relaxed space you will better observe what is around you. I've always said the best landscape photographers are the ones that observed the best. They might not technically be the best photographers but if you have observation in your skill set you are a far better photographer than 90% of photographers who claim to be great. Thank you for your video

All of the tips you shared, Ian, are of value to me; either as a reminder or as an initiation into something I should keep in mind when composing a shot. Again, thank you.

Always so educational Ian. Love the way you give yourself advance time to compose the shot before the light comes so you don’t have to rush the shot. Keep the great content coming!

Thanks Ian for a really great video. I think your first tip is invaluable and one that we often overlook. If I am not up against loosing light,’I try to really absorb the scene before getting the camera out. I used not to, and I know I could do it more.

What I like to do upon arriving the area of choice, is to actually set up my camera on my tripod, while not setting up any compositions. THEN I take the time to immerse myself into my surroundings. And if a scenario develops, then I'll be better able to react (camera & tripod already set up) and get that image.

Your first tip is, to my point of view, a major one: observe and live the present moment prior to shoot. I agree that we are tempted to photograph too rapidly without being inspired by the scene. Patrice

Good tips, sometimes I locally adjust the white balance and make the background slightly cooler and/or foreground warmer to help convey depth. A few small changes like that can make a big difference.

Really enjoyable video Ian. The guidance on composition is really useful, but I don't think I can answer your question, which tip was the most useful. I've always considered composition as being the culmination of the arrangement of parts within the scene, for which we often need to employ a number of different techniques. I don't think there's a hierarchy to the compositional techniques, however there are times when some are more equal than others. I'm going to buy your e-book because it looks really useful and I note from the video your e-book discusses geometry and that one word alone probably speaks volumes about its (I want to say worth, but don't want to make a clumsy pun on your name), so I'll settle with value. All the best

I just watched your beautiful video and I am walking away not remembering what the 5 skills are. I guess it would help me to have a label come up when you introduce a new skill. I tend to remember those labels as context for the verbal explanation. I don’t think this is appropriate for all videos, but in videos where there is a list, I think it helpful. I could even take a screen shot of the label for later reference. The two skills that I struggle with are stopping to explore the scene, and eliminating distractions.

Again , a photographer in a woolly hat walking through the death of a northern winter, lets have some nice weather photography lessons, verdant leaves warm seas tropical fruits, We freeze our rocks off 10 months a year in the UK enough winter scenes every day! if it was nice to be there you could survive without a padded jacket! I so wanted to watch Ian, but too much cloud and dead grass here. So despite the good advice , thumbs down.
