Amongst these 5, which is your favorite composition technique?

I'm not sure I can say I have a favorite. Every image opportunity is different and any of the composition techniques may or may not be in play. My difficulty is seeing and identifying the subtle issues that can make an image better or different. I once setup a shot on the right side of a fallen tree. The center of the tripod was 2'+/- right of the tree. The line of the tree was my leading line to the subject, a beautiful moss covered tree, vibrant green. Once I open the files in LR, I was pissed that I did not take shots where I was centered over the fallen tree. It would have been a better composition and the leading line would have directed the viewers flow to that vibrant, green subject.

I use rule of thirds and leading lines most, but personally think that images featuring symmetrical designs or patterns to be the most eye catching. Love the shirt designs!

As my favorite genre is landscape, I find me searching for leading lines almost every time.

Love the leading lines but I think that using negative space is most eye catching. Great tutorial!!! I struggle to use these composition rules when actually caught in a moment... T-shirts are awesome. The one with histogram is the best. When will you have them for sale?

As to composition techniques, the Rule of Thirds is, for me, the easiest tool to find in my “toolbox”, particularly if I’m not using a wide angle lens. When using a wide angle lens, having found a likely foreground object, my eye seems to naturally seek for patterns, objects, shadows that will serve as leading lines.

Attilio - Really enjoying your channel. Both entertaining and informative. Plus, it's good to see that we all struggle with the same challenges in long exposure photography - the stray person who wanders into the scene and refuses to leave, the quickly changing light at sunset/sunrise making it hard to calculate how long to expose for using 10 or 12 stop filters (and only having so many chances until the sun has set or risen too high in the sky), traffic and trams standing still long enough to to create ghosts. I absolutely love the bridge one you did at about 6:20 in this video. I'd love to know how you processed it. I imagine that selecting all the detail must have been arduous. I live near the George Washington Bridge, which would be a perfect candidate for a shot like this. I hope you can share your technique to achieve this look. Thanks!

Great video. I will run through this list in my head next time I am recording images. Without good composition we are just taking snapshots. I do enjoy taking snapshots for travel, but I'm not going to invest a lot of time post-processing and printing snapshots.

Wow, I really enjoyed this video! These are some very straight forward and easy to apply compositional techniques that one can apply in the field. For myself, I've never thought of using the "broken pattern" method but will try to keep that one in mind from now on. The t-shirts, I love them, how cool is that! I think my favorite t-shirt being the histogram one because it's such a fantastic idea, but they're all amazing in their own right. You really put some thought into designing these shirts and I look forward to seeing if you come up with additional designs. You're killing it with your instructional videos!

Great video once again. Not sure what rule I use but the best way to describe it would be that I look for balance in the photo. If there is something in the top left can I lead the viewer in from the right side. Cool tees... Perhaps an AR on a polo neck or long sleeve?

Attillo, I'm intrigued by the image displayed behind you on the MAC, and also included (image #2) in the 'leading lines' technique (the avenue of Beech trees). Is this the 'Dark Hedges' in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, as used as the 'Kings Road' in Game of Thrones? Or is it some other location? If it is the 'Dark Hedges' I'd like to see your take on other locations in the area. By the way, I am taken with your long exposure fine art photography. Your images are breathtaking.
