In the case of the yellow building, I immediately extended the roof and balcony wall to intersect on the chimney/roof tower across the street. That it was intended as an application of leading lines confirmed that. As there were more such structures, and the one at the intersection did not stand out strongly, it did not work as well as intended. The ocean view with the trees in the foreground was undoubtedly paying heed to the principle of HAVING a foreground. I imagine that cropping just above the highest branches would produce a monochromatic vista of negative space perfect for a magazine cover, with the distant mountain hinted at for a subject. The row of houses proves that symmetry does not go with the rule of thirds. Some rules are mutually exclusive, and trying to follow too many will weaken the application of all. Great critique, and very nice photos.

@MSACoachMike5 жыл бұрын
If you plan to do this again in the future, it may be helpful to some if you took the image and cropped or manipulated it in some manner to show as well as tell the point you want to make. It would make for a more powerful video, especially if at the end of each critique, you show the before and after image. An even gentler way of doing a critique would be to take the powerful images and tell people exactly what you thought made them strong (emphasizing the positive rather than the negative - pun intended!)

Attilio, yes definitely, do more of these. I learn so much from others insights. Just a suggestion if you're able. Some of these images would benefit not only from the explanation, but if you're able, make the adjustments for us to see. Images 3, 5 and 6, I think could work with just need a crop and straightening to Demonstrate your explanation. For image 2, I thought, get rid of the distracting window? on the left, shoot lower (photo appears at normal height) and shift to left some. Maybe have the person relax more instead of just stand there. All interpretation of view of course. Great video and I look forward to your next one! Thanks for all you do to help us improve!

I've been trying to work on composition. Sometimes there's unique interesting things all around us, that we just need to look closer and see. I struggle to see these things sometimes. I've been practicing trying to find these interesting things no matter where I go. The other thing I think I struggle with is lighting. Just because the camera tells you it's the correct exposure.. sometimes you have to get what you want
@AttilioRuffo5 жыл бұрын
practice, practice, practice 👍
@bfs51135 жыл бұрын
@MAsterTroll Spot interesting things is the Art of Seeing (e.g., HCB's decisive moment). Composition is a bag of tricks to enhance the viewing of the photo. Lighting is more about its properties such as mood, harshness, color, direction, etc. Camera metering is about knowing the pattern you have selected and pick one that is appropriate for the scene (understand EV, incident/reflective/spot metering and 18% gray). Some tips on composition: Forget about ROT intersection points, there is no such thing and only belongs to Phi Grid. However, dividing into thirds does help in creating harmony (e.g., placing the beach, sea and sky into horizontal thirds). "Leading" lines meant to lead the viewer's eyes to the subject and not away from it. Sub-framing is similar but restricting the view to further isolating the subject. Although the frame can add a slight value to the image but not predominant. Also remember none of these techniques will place any images into the next level.
