The "I expect to make LOTS of money in 6 months to 1 year" mindset, at least in my opinion, is influenced from the culture that we live in today. We expect everything to be instant, ranging from e-banking, transactions, getting paid on time and instant messaging. That, at least, influenced my mind when I was growing up. I remember learning text messaging and I went, wow I can send this instantly to my best friend, I bet everything works like that too. I always thought once I start a business, I can make my own income right away and be right in like a month. That's completely unreasonable, after thinking, researching and looking at all the competitors I found online past few months. Thank you, Mei, for showing this video. It really is a reminder to myself that the venture of opening a business is a marathon, not a sprint. I hope to be successful in my own business venture soon :) Cheers.

“Most people overestimate what they can do in a year, but underestimate what they can do in a decade” this is has been a very helpful quote for me in releasing impractical expectations. I think folks often imagine a profitable business as the solution and end-all for all their problems and that’s why they want to succeed so quickly, not realizing that in the process of becoming “successful” they’ll achieve the fulfillment they’re looking for.
@CreativeHiveCo3 жыл бұрын
I think you summed it up really well, Alex. Most people don't think their own business will be work and will be a quick money solution, when it's really a long game.

I tried to help my daughter enter the "candy poop" business. Think mini-marshmallows as snowman poop, red hots as cupid poop, Tootsie Rolls as reindeer poop, and so forth. She thought it was absurd that I was adding in the cost of the printed label in the direct expense column of the pricing spreadsheet. Sure, the given label is only a few cents, but it is still a very real cost. She rolled her eyes at allowances for spoilage and returns. Daddy had years of business experience, degrees in business and project management, and an MBA, and told her if she doesn't watch the pennies she won't make the dollars. She also wasn't counting her time as an expense. You don't need fancy business degrees, but you do need to count every bloody penny you spend and put in time doing the homework.

Totally agreed with everything you stated from the education standpoint to the instant gratification mindset. I hate to say this, but the new generations take the conveniency of the modern technology for granted and in a twisted way of thinking that everything is at their fingertips and that success should come in the next 5 min that they put little effort into, and simply gave up once they didn't succeed. I can sympathize with this as I've gone through a restaurant business and now starting an e-commerce brand. Love you're videos.

I think this mentality comes from our “instant” society. People don’t know what hard work is. Myself included. I give up easily and don’t have the back bone to do hard work sometimes. It’s that chugging along time when people want to give up. Also for celebrating the small wins, I think I don’t even notice those things bc I am not documenting them. It’s kind of like when you don’t even realize a prayer is being answered bc you never recorded that blessing.
@CreativeHiveCo4 жыл бұрын
You may benefit from doing a daily gratitude practice! I find it helpful to find 3-5 things I'm grateful for each day. Also, try action steps when it comes to your goals. If you have smaller action steps, you have those small wins along the way.

14:21- I personally think that people have those expectations because of what they heard. like for example someone is selling stickers and they do tones of research and they see that "everyone" is doing so well and they start getting high expectations that they can do as well as them. I am opening a shop soon and to be honest, I was this person at first but then I thought to my self and said " hmm if this someone does so well selling stickers does that mean that I would be able to make as much or more as them" and I thought it over and over again and my final answer was no because everyone sells different things and you will always have a different audience and just as you said in your other videos that if you sell on Etsy then your shop is most likely not going to be brought up in the conversation. please tell me what you think of my opinion I would really appreciate feedback!-Nikol

I think Myth #5 is the biggest one for me. I often get a little paralyzed when I compare my crafts to other amazing creators online. And then I get into this mode - "There's nothing new under the sun! What's the point??? Who'll purchase/enjoy my silly little products??" LOL - I know it sounds dramatic and nihilistic - but it REALLY does get in the way of me pursuing my dreams of opening my own shop. I sort of have to put on creative blinders and trust my developing style and instincts! There's no scarcity in creative pursuits. “There is no shame in creating a product that already exists - Oreo is not the only chocolate sandwich cookie!" Thank you, Mei - the whole video was so helpful. Your last point was ESPECIALLY impactful for me. You're awesome and I'm going to keep watching your videos!!! :o)

The comment about 'making sales for free' was very sobering and I'm infinitely glad that you went over it so clearly and concisely. I'll confess to being one of those sellers who is trying like crazy to make sales and post to FB/IG/Twitter/Pinterest in order to drum up more traffic to my Etsy shop. But...your other video about the cons of Etsy essentially being a sea that sellers can get lost in, has sent me on the search for a different place to sell my handmade goods. I'm curious though, are offsite ads worth it in your opinion? If someone makes a product that can't entirely be created wholesale for sale in local shops or sent out as PR to others, is it worth spending the money for things like Google and Facebook ads as a small business? I've seen that you prefer Shopify to Etsy, but are there other sites that you've tried over the years that you feel would also work well for online retail for fellow handicrafters?
@CreativeHiveCo3 жыл бұрын
I would recommend Shopify 100% every single time. They were designed specifically for e-commerce and they have the largest app market and integrations to help your business run at its best. As for ads, if you know your target audience, which is super important, then Facebook ads are a good investment right now.

So when you say it is okay to take a product already made but put your own twist on it and make it unique. Can you please give an example what is acceptable and isn't ?
@CreativeHiveCo3 жыл бұрын
Nowadays with machines like the Cricut, embellishing items has become the norm. Where that balance comes is between the maker and the customer - some people are fine with an embellished pre-made mug and some want an entirely handmade mug. I think that both options are fine as long as the embellished design is of your own creation. Much like screenprinting a t-shirt. The artist wouldn't be expected to sew their own shirts in addition to screenprinting the design on them.

Thank you so much for these videos! Quick question, i haven’t listened all the way through but you recommend getting people with a large audience to feature our products, which makes sense, but what if we have a really cool design that is proprietary and unique but ultimately recreateable how do we navigate not being copied by bigger companies that can run with our designs? Thank you and happy new year!

Unfortunately you can't. By putting something out there online you are opening yourself up to those who will try to copy. You can protect yourself by documenting when you put things online to prove you had it first, in case you ever decide to pursue legal action.

I'm an indie author who didn't make $18K in one year until about four years. Today every new author expects to make a six-figure income in a year or two. The reason for this is because of the small amount of authors who brag about their income and claim that they can teach other authors how to do this with a course or two. Then these authors create Facebook groups where other authors who've had success will brag up the courses. After a while, you start to believe that making a six-figure income is the norm for all authors. Very few authors want to hear that they may never make that much, and less want to hear that they may never make a living with their writing. I think people believe it because they want to believe it. The easy way is the one that attracts the most people. (I love your videos, by the way! A lot of what you say applies to authors, too.)
@CreativeHiveCo4 жыл бұрын
I'm glad to hear you say that, Ruth Ann, because writing is definitely creative work! And it's true - maybe one person has some immediate success (or they've had a very long road so it just LOOKS like immediate success), but so many many more will not. It can be hard to hear that.

@@CreativeHiveCo thank you, I'll be sure to check it out and thank you for being so helpful to others. I'm trying to balance "avoiding analysis paralysis" and due diligence.

In those 6 years, did you post on social media everyday or once a week? This will help me get started if it could cut my time in half.

I would post when I felt like it, and then I started making a schedule for myself to do once a day. Social media apps can be helpful with this.

I’ve started a gold fashion jewelry been few days now and still no sales 😭 but before I started to open a business, I always had realistic expectations! I get traffic but somehow they don’t convert ‼️someone help me !! I’ve contacted few influencers to promote my product and planning to collab with a clothing business to do giveaway. I’m crossing my fingers this will bring something .

If it's been just a few days, don't fret, Gail! It can take awhile for your site to get into searches and for you to get your name out there. Try using Facebook ads, and keep advertising for free on your own Facebook page, Instagram, and Pinterest.

I think we all do, RondaB! This is definitely an exceptional time for small business and it can be so hard to get moving. If you really are stuck, don't try and force it. Take a walk, read a book, do a craft that's not related to your business. Although, sometimes once I make myself start working I find I get into the flow of it, I guess it's all in how you're feeling that day. Stay safe!

A little condescending, don’t you think? We aren’t all idiots!
@CreativeHiveCo4 жыл бұрын
Not at all, barb! Running your own business when you haven't done it before isn't always what people think it is, and this video talks about the difference between how things seem in business and how they really are. I'm also of the thought that it's okay to not know everything, and to learn a lot, as you go along, and doesn't make anyone an idiot.
