These little guys are one of my favorites. We get some white breasted nuthatches that visit our feeders. I love their wing dance, but it rarely scares off the other birds.

We live in Southern California and have a vegetable garden that is now home to over 50 species of small birds, many live here all year long, BUT last week a pair of Red Breasted Nuthatches showed up, surprisingly tame and now are here in our garden. I have never seen them here before, and I sure hope they stay here with all the other birds and the 1000's of hummingbirds that now live here too, Thanks for this wonderful video!

Moved to the Pacific Northwest from Utah and I couldn't not, for the life of me, figure out what the new "call" was that I was hearing from a mystery bird. Sounded like a tiny Trumpet or something. Every time I'd try and get a look they'd fly right off but today I got a good picture and realized I've got a Red-Breasted Nuthatch. Love this video and all the super awesome stuff these little birds do. Made my day!

White-breasted Nuthatches may be small but their voices are loud, and often their insistent nasal yammering will lead you right to them. 3:03 Both species are often mistaken as woodpeckers, as they have short legs and shimmy up and down tree trunks, but nuthatches are more closely related to chickadees and tufted titmice, than to woodpeckers. The smartest bird species are even wise enough to transcend species barriers. Nuthatches are so fun to hear and watch. A pair of RB nuthatches nested in a box on a ponderosa pine (Marion Co. OR) and collected the sticky fluff from the emerging cone flower buds as nesting material as well as the resin to coat the entrance to the nest. I rarely see them in my yard so this nest was a special treat!

Lesley we rescued a baby who fell from its nest. The parents white breasted nuthatches found the baby and she or he is safe again. The cute bird did not want to leave my hands -:) Blessings to you 🙏

Hi Lesley Thank you for the post. I really enjoy the nuthatches around our camper. We have some straw bales nearby and I've noticed them stuffing seed into the straw stems. I was able to get a video snippet of my six year old grandson holding out his gloved hand, offering some sunflower meats when a yellow breasted nuthatch landed long enough to snag a kernel. I've had them land on my cap while putting seed into the feeder. I love being close to them. Thanks again for the posting

They are one of my favorite birds, I had never seen one because they are not from tropical climates but when I traveled to a place with pine forests I found the white breasted nuthatch and the pygmy nuthatch in front of my cabin.

Thanks for the video! Going to keep an eye out for the use of bark (pretty industrious little critters!) I remember seeing a nuthatch stuff a peanut into a tree followed by some lichen for the first time (only flew a few feet from my hand to the nearest one) and totally blew me away - clever! Trying to keep enough suet out now but the woodpeckers have learned that it's pretty tasty so it's first come first served for the others. Guess they all need the extra energy to fight the cold snaps!

I recently moved to a large wooded property and started feeding the birds about the end of November. Nuthatches are by far my favorite of all the birds at the feeders. I go out and offer them black oil sunflower from my hand until I get tired holding it up. No takers yet, but the nuthatches and the chickadees show some interest as they hop from branch to branch less than 10ft away. The woodpeckers love suet and so do the nuthatches, they get inside of the basket and peck at the cake.

I especially love the red-breasted but rarely see them on my feeders in southern Indiana. You must spend a lot of time in the great outdoors to get so many delightful clips of all the various birds - a labor of love I'm sure. Another really cool thing they do is they spread their wings and sway left and right to threaten other birds or squirrels from a food source. I witnessed this in Manzano Mountains State Park in NM a year ago. It was so cool.

here in Denver I have nut hatches that seem to be the top of the pecking order at the feeder. even sparrows chickadees and the house finches will give way or wait until the nut hatch is done. I am a new sub and enjoying your video’s very much! I put out tube feeders, suet and go out every morning to feed the birds! I started out with Chickadee’s and Blue Jays! Thus far Cardinals, Downey Woodpecker, Black Throated Gray Warbler, Pileated Woodpecker and now Nuthatches! The Chickadees surround me and the Blue Jays wait patiently for me to bring their peanuts! These are some of the highlights of my days during the Winter or anytime of year! I do hope I am helping these beautiful creatures to survive our tough Winters! I like watching both the red-breasted and white-breasted nuthatches where I live in the Ottawa area. I remember one time leaning against a large pine tree while waiting to watch for a possible owl in another tree about 20 feet away. While I'm leaning against that pine tree I hear a slight scratching sound on the bark and the sound is getting closer. I figure it's maybe a squirrel on the trunk and happen to look up. I see a little white-breasted nuthatch walking vertically down the pine trunk towards me. It stopped a few feet above my head - I think it was seeing if I had some seeds. Haha, love watching them get to work and walk all angles of a tree.

dude red-breasted nuthatches just don't care! They're adorable! There's a mated pair by my house and regardless of where I am, they're always hanging out on or around the bird feeder I have out. They love stealing the sunflower seeds and the (I think) male chases away chickadees because the (i think) female is kinda scared of them. I was filling the feeders and one just sat on the feeding hook not even 1 foot away from me and watched me do it lol! I thought he was going to dive-bomb me. My favorite visitors.

We have a pair of these right outside our window constantly running up and down the oak outside. We set suet blocks and I smear unsalted peanut butter in different spots. Between them and the downy woodpecker this tree is exploding with cached seeds. Both species seem to have a mutual respect for each other. We also have a pair of blue jays, cardinals, juncos, field sparrows, quail, and of course the ever present English sparrows whose behavior is disgusting sometimes. It's so good seeing the blue jays show up and drive off the English sparrows-why I love blue jays and their 'bully of the block' attitudes.

Dear Lesley, A beautiful little nuthatch hit my window today. He's only one of two (a mated pair) in my area. I immediately ran outside and brought him in to let him rest, but as soon as I walked in, he flew out of my hands and past the door. I am so, so worried he has a concussion and won't make it. My windows have wooden crossframes and (partial) privacy laminate, so I didn't think this would ever happen. I'm making DIY acopian bird savers tonight. Such an informative video! I’m in NYC and found one yesterday in the middle of the sidewalk just sitting there, it couldn’t fly. Someone almost stepped on the little guy so I brought him home. He seems a little better/more energized this morning but taking him to a bird rescue to make sure his wing is okay first. After watching this, I’d imagine he has a mate watching for him so hoping all is good and I can release him back to the same area. Do you think his mate will wait around a day or two for them? He’s so sweet and friendly. Sadly, a big city is not a good place for them, wish they lived near you...haha I wish I lived near you too! So beautiful there 😍

I had a Family of White Breasted Nuthatches that I used to Hand Feed at My Local Park ! The Dad's Name was Alfalfa the Mom was MaMa and their 1 baby that I named Junior ! I now have Red Breasted Nuthatches feeding from My hand out My Back Window along with My usual Friends the Chickadees and White Breasted Nuthatches ! I Love them All !!!

Oh I just saw one of these for the first time in my life! I thought he/she was a sparrow except they were hoping downwards on a tree trunk facing it's head towards the ground. I was looking for exactly this as a feature of the bird. Now I know. 😄

It’s funny, a couple nuthatches came up to me when I was putting out the suet and bird see in my backyard this morning. They are amazing little birds. There's a pair of red-breasted nuthatches that will eat from my hand as well, and seem eager to be friendly with me. At first I was surprised that wild birds would come so close. They're the only species of birds I've experienced this with, other than blue jays. They seem naturally curious and confident.

I once saw a RBN standing on a thick branch about 4 feet off the ground. When he dropped the peanut he was holding, he cocked his head to get a bead on it, dove and caught it only 18-20 inches below the point where he dropped it.

Last February I observed BOTH white breasted nuthatch mates working on a potential nest site all day, one late Saturday. However I didn't see any further activity after that day. It wasn't a very secure location so I'm not surprised they decided against it. Or maybe they abandoned it for other reasons. The winter was obscenely mild here which caused a massive cherry crop failure - too many insects, plus a late freeze and snow dump. It's not normal to see nesting behavior in February. My job season starts in spring so I always miss nesting and hopefully I continue to miss it for the health of the birds!

A nuthatch has built a nest on the outside windowsill of my bedroom window. I was surprised that she doesn't seem bothered by my presence. She has decorated around the side with lichen, and has made a thick little den of soft dried leaves.

I need to watch my male/female Downy Woodpeckers that visit my feeders as well. I happen to have a white breasted Nuthatch couple in a pine tree across from my feeders. When I’m gardening around the feeders they don’t seem bothered by my presence either. They also make the cutest low key too. Just last week I saw the male taking some of the Alpaca hair I have for the birds to make nests - Interesting for sure.

Thanks for the nuthatch video. I have a lot at my feeder in Oregon. I'll watch more closely for the behavior you mentioned. One question: the nuthatches seem to flock with chickadees. The nuthatches are very aggressive driving the chickadees off the feeders, so why do the chickadees hang-out with nuthatches? The chestnut-backed chickadees seem to resist the ornery nuthatches more. They won't take the crap from the nuthatches.

I live in Alberta Canada and I get white and red breasted nuthatches all year. According to my sources, the red breasted nuthatches are in New Brunswick all year but remember, they are irruptive so some years they can just disappear. Unfortunately, the white breasted nuthatches seem a little random in their appearances in New Brunswick, appearing in great numbers in September only to disappear entirely for all of October and then reappear again in November. I've found that red breasted nuthatches will always choose a nut over a seed and will be the first of all birds to take food from your hands. I recommended holding the seed or nut upside down in your hand to have them display their maneuverability. White breasted nuthatches are very shy. They disappear from the feeder when I walk outside, but their confidence grows the more the chickadees and red breasted nuthatches get used to you. I've never had a white breasted nuthatch land on my hand but their personalities can vary. I've had the pleasure of watching two white breasted nuthatch nests and it is quite funny to watch them walk up and down the tree rubbing those beetles all along the trunk as if they are sweeping the tree clean. Nuthatches are by far my favourite bird, and I hope you can find the same joy in them as I have. A man once said that if a man lived as a bird did, he would quickly be tired by the energy of life he experienced. A nuthatch is the best example of this life.

Wow! Nuthatches are such awesome birds. I've never actually seen one since I live down south in Texas, but I hope one day a nuthatch will visit one of my feeders! I've watched white breasted nuthatches do this crazy dance, opening their wings and swaying back and forth, to scare away chipmunks and squirrels from a choice food source. It's actually hilarious and very cute! I just began my bird-feeding adventure, and have seen so many birds that I'd never thought I'd see! Unfortunately, a surplus of rodents (rats and SQUIRRELS) recently migrated to my yard after a patch of land was developed close to my house. I had a bluebird pair that I was elated to realize were living in an old woodpecker hole in a dead tree right over my porch! Sadly, squirrels harassed them until they left, and I actually witnessed the squirrels eating one of the hatchlings. It was truly heartbreaking. I tried scaring them off, but one squirrel actually lunged at me when I walked up to investigate, like he was gonna jump on me and bite! Thank goodness for air rifles, lol. I didn't want to kill them, but I was forced to after they killed baby birds and chewed through the electrical wires on my AC unit. Now that I've considerably thinned out the squirrel population, my birds are coming back! Love your vids. Very informative! Birds are pretty much the best! :)
