First of all. The seed vault isn’t for us regular people. How are the seed distributed if something happens? Why not send out some seeds out to nations that have food issues?

It's about having a sample of the seeds available so they could make other seeds if needed someday, not having a large amount on hand for immediate use.

The seed vault holds a huge inventory, but with a limited supply of each species or cultivar, to be used following a globally catastrophic event. It's basically a huge starter kit.

I think you're confusing 'seeds' with 'a massive secret vault full of wheat'. Seeds of endangered trees, poisonous cactus, thousand year dead species and a thousand species of daisy aren't helpful to 'nations with food issues'. The vault is designed to preserve the variety of plant life. Not to make sure mankind can survive and eat. It's not a secret food stash for when the world runs out of food for 'the elite' to keep eating. It's a stash of every plant we've been able to categorize so if an asteroid hits the earth, or something equally catastrophic, whoever's left can potentially recover the biodiversity of a region. Not so whoever's left has a ready supply to re-grow fields and fields of crops.

You can in Africa!! I studied in Kigali Rwanda for a year and was shocked at the fresh fruits, look completely different than any in the US and all of the watermelons had seeds picked fresh from the ground 😊 bought from the women at the markets on the side of the rode
