I used to work with Boy Scouts. I insisted they get two merit badges. Wilderness survival and Pioneering. Basically what you teach. My motto with them was “the more you know, the less you have to carry”. Thanks for what you do.

I am a scoutmaster and I insist my scouts earn wilderness survival, pioneering, fishing, and orienteering. They aren’t required for Eagle Scout, but they should be for the very reason of self reliance.

In the UK we have another name for the square knot, we call it a reef knot, and every boy scout carries this knot on the scout membership badge on their uniform

Great refresher video. Lots of folks can learn from this if they'll only try and practice. My dad was in the navy during WW II and taught most of these to me when I was a lot younger. Done right, these can be a life saver.

I was a Boy Scout when I was 12. I learned these knots but never owned them. I credit you and your videos for now owning these knots. Your instructional ability is second to none, and watching your videos has ingrained this knowledge into my 66yo brain. And for that, I thank you.

An ancient skill that sea going men used every day. Examples of this can be found dating back over thousands of years. Today however, you would be lucky to find someone who can tie their shoes properly. Cheers from Winnipeg.

We used to use the bowline to tie a belay for rappelling/rescue. The figure 8 follow through is now the favorite. The bowline is still used for lifting/hauling tools when needed.

Since I was a kid I've always been a knot guy. Ratchet straps? I keep a few in my pickup but rarely use them, I find rope a lot easier to work with and it's cheaper. Only 4 tie downs in my truck bed, in each corner, with rope, I created a tie down system with loops every 2 +/- feet and threaded through the corner tie down points, all the way around the bed. I've used rope/cord to tie ridge and guy lines, no need for fancy tensioners when a taut line hitch works just fine. Half hitch, slip knot, bowline, alpine butterfly and trucker's hitch are all easy to tie and pretty much take care of any situation. I know others but those are the ones I use most often. I keep a short segment of paracord lying around and when I'm sitting and watching TV or watching KZbin videos, I'll practice different knots just to help with muscle memory.

Thank You very much for this video. I need to practice these. I've just been "tying things up" without understanding how to use the knots I've been tying. Knowing about different ropes and cords would be helpful, too. I used boating rope to secure my belongings on my suv cargo rack and everything loosened up on me on a 70mph mountain highway. Boating rope is for boating. Not securing things.

The second way you tie the bowline knot is the way I most commonly always tie a bowline at the end of a rope I've used them for emergency belts along with the same kind of idea behind the Ridgeline system tie a bowline at the end run it through then tie the slip like you're doing a Ridgeline
@ndvancouveroutdoors50935 ай бұрын
I sat watching this video and other reference videos to get the arbor and bowline knots down. I had the reef knot down since childhood and was using it to attach cordage together instead of a fishermans knot. I had been using the fisherman's knot for creating Prusiks for my Ridgeline. The Bowline practice also improved my Ridgeline since I was using an unknown knot. I have started using the arbor knot now in my room like a zip tie and once tight have been able to tie the ends together like shoelaces to keep electrical cords off the ground. I have a fire ant infestation in the walls of my room coming from the piping system and need to keep all the cords off the ground. It's like living outside in a building. If it gets worse I may need to evacuate. Thanks for helping me get the arbor and bowline knots as well as other knots. I haven't got the fifth one yet. I wasn't using the reef knot right either and may move to the fisherman's knot on my fragmented Ridgeline.

I use sheet bends for line hauling, not much else. Their ease of untying is key. Def useful to hitch the corner of a tarp or piece of fabric.

well. don't forget. the square not is designed for joining two ropes of the same diameter as well. the fishermans knot however, is just a stronger connection.

Still loving your most informative vids CPL. Talk about practical applications, I’ve used the bowline around myself and bushcraft zip tie around hocks of cows struck on track by trains to remove them when we can’t get a vehicle in! Unfortunate life of a train driver in the remote areas of Australia. My colleagues think I’m a guru, but it’s all because of your education and sharing of information. Thanks again CPL for all you do! Real quality for real life applications on top of my bushcraft. 👍🏼🤝 🇦🇺
