I got Andy Hampsten's autograph on a page about 7-11 in a cycling magazine I have when 7-11 arrived at Stapleton Airport in Denver, Colorado on their flight back from Italy after Andy had taken out the Giro. I was waiting at that gate patiently for about five hours so I wouldn't miss them and it was just me at that end of the concourse. I freaking scooped the news reporters and got to talk to Andy first. It will always be a life highlight for me to have met him just like I've also met Greg Lemond, Ron Kiefel, Jonathan Vaughters and several other pro cyclists. They are all great down to earth humans despite the great things they have achieved in pro cycling. Andy seemed to down play that he had just won a Grand Tour and the first American to do so. He made it seem like he had just ridden some little stage race with the team and they ended up winning. We know how very hard they had to work to win the Giro. The Tour de France is a fantastic race but the Giro d' Italia is my favorite. That Irish pro you listed as number five. Who is he ? I've never heard of him and wouldn't consider Kevin Livingston really to be a cycling legend.

Andy Hampsten is my cycling hero. When I think of a down to earth American cyclist I think of him, and he never got to much attention always being thought of as a support rider until the Giro. Domestiques are the coolest riders in my opinion.

Hampsten got caught in the worst era of cheating in cycling's history. Without EPO use in the peloton Andy would have won more and rode longer. Real shame, he was a special talent

I reckon there are a lot of pro riders from the 90s and early 00s having an intentionally anonymous retirement. Laying low and hoping no one has too close a look at their past. e.g. Mr Ekimov, although he is working for katusha and not happy to be questioned too much.
