I'm getting all emotional after seeing good, old Shug of the piney woods finally grab a paddle and head out on a solo canoe trip. Watching him glide effortlessly across the BWCA does my old heart good. Keep the open side up and maybe you'll be up for a trip to Ontario's piney woods one day!

Great to see the ol' ultra lightweight back packer out on the canoe Shug. The reason you watch so many Canadian channels with canoeing is because of how much water and wilderness we have up here! Was told years ago, "It's Ok to talk to yourself, as long as you don't answer" lol.

I found myself smiling through most of your video, happy to see you enjoying the BWCA in a canoe. I was glad to see you joyful despite the rain; I've told many people, a day of rain in the BWCA is more beautiful than just about any place on earth in the sunshine. I'm thinking your fishing would be more productive out on the water rather than from the shore. Your videos always bring me joy. This one did not disappoint. Next time, if you're going to take those monster portages, spring for a Kevlar rental! You'll shave about 20 to 25 pounds off your burden. Once I went Kevlar, I've never gone back.

Well it sorta looks like a hammock. I wonder how it hangs. Nice to see you try new things. I used to have a kayak and often wished I had went with a canoe. Waterproof stuff sacks tied in, makes good flotation. Garbage bags are lightweight waders. I live in a desert now and the nearest water is full of jet skis. Kevlar used to be the lightest boats, but it is likely carbon fiber these days.

You're an inspiration to us "not so young guys anymore:, Shug and this was your first solo canoe trip and I have to thank you for inspiring me to do my first 4 day solo hammock moto camping trip in Northern Ontario last week. I learned so much about hammocks from you that I could have never figured out on my own and all those old videos of yours were new to me and got me to the confidence level to give it a try. You saved me so much time and frustration that I would have no idea how to put this complicated puzzle together without your help. I LOVED it and was warm and dry on one day of rain and one night it got close to 0 (32), but I had all green lights on this one. Keep being the inspiration you are and not sure I could have done it without you.

@@MikeycatOutdoors kinda funny you mention that. I have a better half that is a dietary manager that supervises a kitchen at an assisted living facility. She brings me pickle buckets all the time. They have a great silicone type gasket but they are the pop off lids. I use them for hydroponic pepper growing. I can also get the other extreme 55 gallon barrels but no lid. The barrels he uses are around 20 gallon I believe and are great when used with the pack frame.

I usually go like hell the first day to get as far in as possible to see less people. I find myself taking a day off the second day like you did, to rest up and enjoy just being out. I tend to always travel when it rains, gets kinda boring sittin under a tarp all day. I gave up on pancakes after my first camping trip as a kid, they make a big mess for the nutritional value received. Never used a hammock, air mattress has always worked fine for me. I never use the paddle as a corner pole for the shelter, I always get out fishing after camp is set, if it isn't too late. Solo trips have a flavor that most people will never experience, you appear to be a guy that would be fun to do a trip with, march on, brotha
@shugemery
@shugemery 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the get-away! Pancakes are more a taste thing for me other than nutritional value. I find canoeing was nowhere near as tiring as pure backpacking. Hammocks allow me to sleep longer and so much better and have restorative qualities for my 63 year old body. Had I wanted to paddle in the evening the paddle is so easy to remove from my tarp so no issue there. It can have duel function. Solo was amazing for sure.

I also love I’m catching you at the beginning of you’re canoe adventures. Amazing that you packed (and carried) so much stuff! As far as the chair, I had similar thoughts. Love how light it is, but it’s not so easy getting out. They do make a bottom piece that helps it from sinking into the ground which helps. I wear Keen Newport H2 sandals for water sports (canoe, kayak, raft) they are great. Good toe protection, traction and will work for short hikes.

darn I love boating camping......I have a little inflatable one-man kayak with double paddle......spending all day on the lake or river and in the afternoon setting up my tent and making dinner.....sometimes fishing, sometimes foraging for wild edibles..... here in Germany there some great rivers,,, that are interconnected, so no portages.......but I usually go out if I reach a lock......in summer those locks are pretty busy with motor boats,,,, and with me in my tiny kayak sitting side by side in that lock and getting lifted up or down,.... can be scary.... And yes wet feet are an occupational hazard when boating.........thats why I put some thick wool socks on when I am back in my boat....keeps them dry and warm, seeing that in a kayak you cant move very well to stretch your legs or wiggle your toes.....

Awesome Shug! That high site on Vista Lake is one I stayed on as well for my first solo. 1984 though. Beautiful view. I’m sure people will be jumping in with tips and tricks but 2 things you can do for your back while in the canoe. A seat back chair and foot braces make all the difference. Looking forward to part 2. Thanks!

Soggy feet: Yes, part of canoeing! We always used special water shoes (old sneakers!) for canoeing. You can change into better footwear for the portages, if needed...as you noted, you're canoe camping, not backpacking! My family vacations growing up were canoe camping in the Adirondacks. I love your video updating us on your first canoe trip!

Just finished the Voyageur Border route from International Falls to Lake Superior. The last portage is a tough one at 2,630 rods (8.5 Miles). Best part is I get a Shug video when I get back. Life is good.

Thanks for a great video and congrats on 36 years! Last March I was paddling with The Sassafras Prince on the Suwannee River. Thought I was doing pretty good with my steering strokes until I dug in hard once and flipped us right over, and it happened quickly, too. Come to find out my cap size is seven-and-five-eighths.

Congratulations on your first solo canoe trip!! I have hammocked once on a canoe trip it was a bit unnerving because of always worried that a creature could go underneath me. I know I just need to get out there and do it some more. I do believe that you get a better sleep in a hammock then a tent. Especially in the BWCA where some sites have so many tree roots. We stayed at the campsite by the staircase falls it was beautiful, but man was there a lot of roots.

Glad to see you exploring the canoe world. With the summer heat in SC I go back and forth. Kayak / canoe in the warmer months and backpack in the cooler months. They both offer a unique experience. Of course I'm river running here and not lake hoping. So I only load and unload at camp. That means bringing a whole assortment of camp goodies. I might eat better out of a kayak than I do at home. lol...
