Did IV sedation last week for my wisdom teeth removal. I felt nothing and remember absolutely nothing. For conscious sedation I got “knocked out” very quick and deeply! They stuck the IV in my arm, distracted me by having me talk about work, and not even 15 seconds after the IV was in, I was out! All I remember was talking about work then waking up. Don’t even remember falling asleep. Just fully awake before and waking up in recovery room. 100% works. Sending lots of luck to anyone getting anesthesia!

I have recently found a dentist who realised I was very nervous about a tooth extraction and offered me the opportunity to get it done under general anaesthetic at a local dental hospital. I feel much more comfortable with the idea of being totally unaware of what’s going on, particularly since she explained it wouldn’t be a straightforward extraction. She listened to my concerns though and didn’t hesitate to make the referral to the dental hospital so I could have more powerful anaesthetic to help my anxiety.

So my anxiety and panic disorder is so bad that I need IV sedation for a cleaning because I start freaking out, breathing too heavy or can’t breathe and historically crying. I believe it’s because I feel my airways are blocked, laughing gas only makes it worse. I’m also claustrophobic. IV sedation is expensive though and my insurance won’t pay for it. I’ve tried everything and IV is the only thing that will stop me from leaving when I’m fully out of it (twilight). I had minor gum surgery this past summer and opted for laughing gas because IV sedation cost twice as much (gum surgery isn't generally covered by dental insurance unfortunately). But I was already panicking days before and the day of I just burst into tears the second they started the gas lol. It ended up doing nothing to calm me down. I cried through most of it until I was exhausted, which calmed me down more than the gas did, and by then the surgery was almost over. It's unfortunate because I've gotten to a "tolerable" point with my dental phobia and this has been a huge setback.

I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed with IV sedation. Never even knew I would be still somewhat conscious because they mentioned that I would be sleeping. But it makes sense because I was not on a ventilator. All I had was really oxygen going through my nose. But after they started the IV and pushed the medication’s in. 30 seconds later and I don’t remember what the heck happened. The next thing I remembered was waking up in the dental chair and they were done. And although I may have talk to the doctors or people, I don’t even remember that. At all. But I was extremely relaxed, and it literally felt like I had gone to sleep after 30 seconds. It seemed like. Because I remember absolutely nothing after that. Nothing. It was so nice. it was like a nice nap. I’ll be having the sedation again soon for a surgery going on in my right eye. If it was good that I won’t be Wideawake and I’ll be getting the IV sedation again. It was really pleasant the last time for my wisdom, teeth removal. And I’ll be in the La La Land/daydream estate again I will probably forget everything again. But I think it was one of those people, who totally slipped through it once it kicked in. Or could’ve been still somewhat awake but I don’t even remember nothing. After a few moments, it started kicking in. It’s nice having blocks all that memory. It really makes it seem like time has flown by and the next thing you remember you’re done. You don’t even remember them telling you what was going on. So that was my experience with wisdom teeth removal. I think I was pretty much sleeping for the most part. Your videos are really fascinating and I love the dentist.

@@ryanlewis9953 it went well. I had 2 procedures done last year, and 1 deep cleaning this year. I'm glad that I did it as my gums are much healthier now (no bleeding whatsoever). 1. 2 teeth extracted, gums scaling + root planing + gum graft (upper teeth) - I went with the IV sedation just in case since it involves teeth extraction and gum graft that involves stitching. Almost didn't felt a thing. I think the worst part was keeping my mouth opened for extended period. Everything felt like a blur. 2. Gums scaling + root planing - Went with oral sedation on that one (to save $$), and it almost worked equally well but obviously went quicker. 3. Deep cleaning - no sedation was needed. If you're very anxious and need the extra comfort, then go with IV sedation. Also, they told me that oral sedation might not last long while with IV sedation, they can pump more if needed, for longer procedures. Oral sedation should last at least 2-3 hours though.

Difficult to say. I had a doctor do it twice in the same session because I almost knocked him down while he was shooting the second shot. He then got mad, gave me a stern warning not to do that again, and then went easier the second round. Still hurt a little, but I pushed through it. Again, it may be because it was an infected area and swollen.

I got my temporary crown/prep/install and had the numbing injection. When I went back in for my permanent to be placed 2 weeks later, it was not easy to remove the temporary. I got anxious and felt discomfort. I asked for a numbing shot...and then asked for more. Apparently those temps are "supposed to pop right off" ! (this was not my first crown experience). Ever since the TEMP went in, I have been sensitive to drinking cold water - that has not gone away with the 'permanent'. My jaws and even my top row of teeth seem to be sore - like 'vibrating' and achy (like my jaw was open way too long for a procedure). I was given 600mg ibuprofen after the permanent and it's REALLY exacerbated my tinnitus! The only relief I feel is shortly after taking the IB - which is not sustainable to take, and by applying a warm heated pad to my jaws - both sides. Note: the tooth that has the crown does not give me pain. I'm at a loss. Going back for a follow up next week.

Around 1 year ago, I had my first wisdom tooth removal with local anesthetic and it wasn't traumatic at all: quick, painless, just uncomfortable at best. Well... a few days ago I went to the same dentist for another wisdom tooth removal and, after the dentist used the local anesthetic, I started to hyperventilate, my heart rate was pretty high and I was pale and about to pass out. I didn't change anything about the meds I take and I was very calm on the chair, so I'm not sure what happened. Anyways, when she started to remove the tooth (after I wasn't pale anymore), I actually felt pain, cried a bit, she tried again and actually had a panic attack. Despite all my will to remove my tooth, I asked her to stop and she left me with a broken tooth which is partially out of the socket, because of course she couldn't sedate me more. I was also unable to drive myself and she called my father to pick me up. I will go back to her in a few days and she promised me she will use a stronger sedative this time, but she didn't specify which. All I know is that it will be "drops", so I guess she will use an oral sedative? I'm not really sure and I'm looking online to try find out, because I really don't want to go through that experience again

@feasted29412 жыл бұрын
It depends how high the blood pressure is. If it is extensive, she needs her primary care doctor to prescribe blood pressure medication (such as lisinopril), if the blood pressure is high, but not a contraindication for treatment, they can use local anesthesia WITHOUT epinephrine. My suggestion would be to get a home monitoring blood pressure cuff from amazon, monitor blood pressure daily, and get on a blood pressure reducing medication.

Do you monitor pulse ox during laughing gas?
@alixjeffrey2566 ай бұрын
Yes they do I had a monitor on my index finger it showed my oxygen level and my heart rate pulse on the monitor when I had my molar extracted. The assistant put the nose mask with the nitrous before my oral surgeon came in and did the local in my mouth. I have asthma so he was very careful to make sure that I was not going to have an asthma attack.
@ianshelton6662 Жыл бұрын
You forgot to mention that general anesthesia requires a ventilator and breathing tube because the medications paralyze your muscles temporarily and induce a temporary coma. It's like being in the ICU on life support during a dental procedure
@ricgsy7825 Жыл бұрын
I don't think they intubate you for dental work so you wouldn't need a ventilator and breathing tube . I think they just put you in a deep sleep so you don't remember anything..

@TeethTalk At my next general cleaning (not a deep cleaning) I'm going to ask for local. It's an experiment for myself as I've never done it for a cleaning before but my hypothesis is that the jabs are actually less painful. Often at cleanings there's some scraping on the gum lines, I think it may just be easier to brave the needle and get the hard part over with in the beginning. Some injections i haven't even felt when i've gotten cavities filled due to the topical gel. However, I was wondering how many shots it would take to get all of my gumlines numb for the cleaning? I'm willing to try it even if there are a multitude of needle piercings, but I draw the line at palatal injections or the inferior alveolar. What blocks/infiltrations in particular would they likely give me (I have a rudimentary understanding). On another note, something you might tell patients to help overcome their fears of the injections is to learn more about how they work and the techniques. It definitely helped me and I've impressed dentists with my knowledge! One said I have a better understanding than her students about what bevel orientation means.

Laughing gas actually gives me more anxiety and crying. My old dentist I went to specifically for laughing gas because I have bad anxiety, and while I was given laughing gas, I was trying to move the dentist's hand away and he laughed and told his assistant "that's a lot of anxiety" anxiety is not something to laugh at!

Horrible. The first needle was like, ow, that's a 4 out of ten. Maybe it won't be so bad. Then they did the outer gum and it felt like a red hot poker. There was no sedation option or I'd have taken it.

I had a root canal. Painful. By the way. Only because surprisingly we found out that my body was quick on getting rid of novacane effects. I don’t remember how many times I had to be given novacane. But it was a good amount of times and it was painful.

It was not bad, I had supposedly 3 15 minute rounds of IV anesthesia. Don’t be nervous of the needle. Just the little prick, and you don’t feel what they’re shooting you up with. After that you wake up asking “Done Already?”

American dentists push nitrous oxide because it makes money for them. Its massively over prescribed for this reason. In the UK it is almost never used and it's very rare to find a dentist that uses it. That's because most dentists are part of the NHS and its use would incur a cost to the NHS. I've had fillings in the UK and root canals and there is absolutely no way that a patient needs to be drugged for these procedures. I've met loads of people in the UK who have had fillings, root canals and extractions and none of them had nitrous oxide for these procedures. I've yet to meet one that has. Something else I noticed is that most Americans have had their wisdom teeth removed but I've not met anyone in the UK who has. When I was living in the US, my dentist pushed me to have my wisdom teeth out. I refused. That was 30 years ago and I've had no issues. Another money making scam from American dentists.

some of the worst panic attacks ive had over the years is worrying about getting my wisdom teeth removed and being awake (im not worried about pain or gross feeling, im worried about what my dumbass will say when im basically drunk) got my braces off, yayy xray shows wisdom teeth almost completely sideways and explains the gut wrenching jaw pain ive been getting after my braces... yay... go to the dentist next week. idk how i am going to not have a serious breakdown if they say no full knockout gas. i do not care if its bad for my health, if i say something outlandish, it will haunt me way way way way way way way worse than the full knockout stuff side effects.
