Great tutorial. A few questions.... I'm replacing a Bravo 3 yoke assembly, so I'm keeping all other parts. Should I just replace the O-ring, or is there a seal I should replace also? Is that available in a set from Mercruiser or Sierra? 3. Can I use an inexpensive dial type torque wrench? I'd hate to spend big bucks on a one time use dial type torque wrench!
@snoop1683 жыл бұрын
Just wondering if I understand this correctly. Since you’re suspending the whole assembly and letting it hang by gravity and only tightening the nut until the bearings have the correct torque, is the end result that the gear isn’t actually all the way seated onto the teeth of the yoke? About to perform this and that’s the part that’s got me a little confused. Also I did not break the bearings off the gear when I disassembled. Do I need to or can I just put back together as-is ensuring the rolling torque doesn’t go above the spec?

Do you have the video showing separating the gear from bearings? and is it possible to use a clickable torque wrench for the preload, i'm sure it's not as accurate but is it possible? thanks for the videos!

I wouldn't.

If it's a 92 bravo, did you say I don't need to preload the bearings? Simply torque the bolt to 80 ft lbs?
@chrisa6607 жыл бұрын
That is for earlier Alpha drives. All Bravos use this (rolling torque) method...

Any suggestions on methods to remove a retaining nut that has been chewed up by a faulty u joint. Most of the teeth are broke and can’t get a good grip on it with the spanner

See the tool holding the assembly in the vice? That's the tool you use to remove the cover, then the assembly slides straight out of the housing...

i just bought 2003 ebbtide 182 boat with a alpha one drive and i hear chattering noise on the head on the out drive. What do u think it can be ?

where did you purchase the yoke sleeve I need a sleeve for a bravo drive
@chrisa6603 жыл бұрын
It's called a 'speedi-sleeve' and most bearing shops can get them. You need to measure up the yoke to know which sleeve you need.

Hi chris - gr8 vid thanks! I set the bearings by feel last week like the head bearings on motorcycles.. I know its a bit of a shot in the dark but didnt have a beam style handy.Ill recheck it this week.. alpha 1 gen 1 - was just tight enough to not bind etc- anyway, what wd happen if it was slightly on the loose end? How do I know if I have the spacer or not? Manual says "Reassembly with Small Spacer:" - how wd I know? My bearings had a 1/4 or so piece in between them - hard to tell from pics.. The nut came off real easy so I presume safe to say it requires the rolling method? Def wasnt 70-80 lb. ft unless assembled wrong? One thing I did notice was if I went a pinch too far the bearings wd get TIGHT, so I backed it off a little, also - the engine side bearing came off shaft by hand- no pressing required, basically everything slid off except the tapered bearing at the end of shaft- hope this makes sense?

when you tested with the dial you only barely moved it, so you're not supposed to do a 360 with the dial? Wish you could have shown the dial clearer to see the 5 on it from the angle you filmed at it looks like a 0. Also did you use the red Loctite for the thread?

i have tried 3 times to set the preload on the drive shaft bearings without any luck. I loosened the bearing each time. I tried a sweep arm torque wrench and a click type. I cannot get any reading before nut bottoms out. Any idea what I'm doing wrong

You need a smaller torque wrench

Do I have to dissemble the 2 bearings that and the gear ? Mine feel rough / dry .. I don't know if that's from the mechanic over torquing to 50lb in ? Or using brake cleaner to clean the nut area .. he couldn't get the torque right so i just took it home and dissembled it again and I want to see if my bearings are bad or is because of what he did ??
@chrisa6607 жыл бұрын
If the bearings feel rough, replace them. 50lb-in? replace them. Brake-cleaner, no problem, but replace the bearings, and yes, the bearings have to be pressed off the gear.
@naiefelyemeni19867 жыл бұрын
chrisa660 But they felt just fine before he over tightened to 50 lb in ? When I spin they feel like they're dry .. can I oil them to see if it makes a difference? Or take them apart and oil ?
@Robert-eo9gl3 жыл бұрын
If this type was torque to 50ft. Lbs. Have you ruined It?
@Chris-hx3om3 жыл бұрын
Yes. You've overloaded the bearing surfaces and likely cracked the case hardening.

@@Chris-hx3om I want to do this right so I've ordered new bearings, when I get them do I press that gear in all the way til it won't go anymore?
@Chris-hx3om3 жыл бұрын
@@Robert-eo9gl Press the first bearing on all the way (only press on the INNER race!). Then put the first bearing outer race, the spacer and the second bearing outer race on and press the second bearing on until it ALMOST touches the outer race. Then start your rolling torque readings and tighten the nut as you go (to get the right reading).

I have a pre alpha outdrive can I use a torque wrench for this particular outdrive?
@chrisa6605 жыл бұрын
You do not have a pre-alpha drive, nobody does. There is no such thing as a 'pre-alpha'... You may have an MC1. Either way, no, you can't use a torque wrench. You MUST use a torque indicator, as I have shown.

What year alpha 1 gen 2 can you just torque to 80 ft lbs?
@chrisa6603 жыл бұрын
None. The 80ft-lb spec is only applicable to units that have the inner spacer, which was removed around 1983.

you have to use a dial type in. lbs. torque indicator.pre-load for new bearings is 6 to 11 inch pounds.used bearings preload is 4 to 6 in. lbs.a bearing is considered used if it`s spun under load once.

This makes me laugh, ive been a gearbox engineer for 35yrs and all you need to achieve on any taper roller bearing is a torque that doesn't allow the needle rollers to be lose or move.
@Chris-hx3om2 ай бұрын
I guess you mean 'loose', not 'lose'... And what happens the the bearings if the torque is too high?
@lloydcisco30275 жыл бұрын
They teach that in school? Theirs a breakaway torque that's what your measuring Mercruser wants a rolling torque same as all their double Bering box same as Volvo. When you set that you go round and round with torque wrench. And watch the dial the breakaway torque is always higher than rolling torque on a Volvo you rap the Bering box with a string take inch pound scale and study pull and read reload I don't know who is teaching the schools or this is coming from a. Service Manuel and you can't reuse the selflocking nut one time use.
@chrisa6605 жыл бұрын
No, I'm measuring rolling torque, as specified by the Merc service manual. You have a couple of issue you need to address. First is your spelling. Second, learn to read the service manual, nowhere does it say the nut can't be reused.
