I also just bought the black Cecelio not long ago because I was looking to learn and see if I could get into playing without breaking the bank lol. Unfortunately, so many other reviewers are quick to bash it without really giving it a fair chance and comparison to other electric cellos, so I just wanted to thank you for being kind and honest about it! I realized going in that it was not going to sound as good as a Yamaha or NS because of the price jump, but it's rather disheartening to see others hold it to the same high standards as a cello that costs hundreds or thousands of dollars more. :/ It means a lot to see someone be honest about its purpose of being a student/beginner cello and you made it sound nearly just as good as the others with your skill! :) Thank you again for this video, it was very encouraging and made me feel better about my choice and about learning to play in general. Someday I hope to upgrade as well, but I am happy with what I have now lol.

There must be a problem with the actual KZbin sound coming out: what I heard was quite the opposite ! The red Cecelio sounded very much acoustic while the NS sounded completely muffled. From using several electric violins I experienced, a lot depends on the pickups plus using IR devices, like the VSound !

I think considering the price difference tells you an awful lot about the sound quality differences. That being said I was really impressed with the cecilios price difference considered. There's a decent sized difference in the audio quality. However when I looked up the higher end yamaha it was around 2500 on amazon. The cecilios are all around 420 dollars on amazon. So considering it's basically 2000 dollars more expensive than the cecilio I'm inclined to go with the cecilio. Primarily because I don't feel that the sound quality (especially in the sound card examples since I'm a recording engineer and that's the most important demo for my job type) is not a 2000 dollar difference. To my ears it sounds like the difference between a 1000 dollar prs se electric guitar, vs a 4000 dollar prs custom 24 electric guitar. Yes there's a difference there. But not a difference that makes the ultimate price difference worth it based on audio alone. Now the playing feel and comfort factors are very important and should not be ignored. However until I have the opportunity to play both and make that specific comparison I have no opinion on that. But for now since I'm going to be learning cello I'm going to be going with the Cecilio! Thank you so much for a direct comparison and explanation of your perspective as a trained cellist!

I’m a composer and professional pianist, but I have for a long time wanted to learn the cello, and because I live in an apartment, the ability to practice as a total beginner without disturbing the unappreciative neighbours 😂 is an important factor. First of all, I very much like the details of your expression or phrasing, such as your double stop in bar 4 of the suite no. 1 minuet (at 2:45). This sounds gorgeous to me, and I could listen to it over and again. And your sound on the tenuto a and d notes in bar 8 (at 2:52) to me bears a lightness and majesty and volume at the same time. Awesome. Being a pianist tinkering with the idea of starting to play an electric cello, your video was most helpful to me in that you demonstrated how the Yamaha and NS instruments are able to bring forth a wonderful sound. I bet you might be even MORE impressed :-)THANKS for your VERY helpful review!!!

Thanks so much for making this video. Obviously it was a lot of work. But very few people are in such a unique position to have so many of what is essentially a niche instrument. I definitely love the SVC-210, but the 110 but about 1000 dollars less here is so competitive. I'm surprised the 110 doesn't allow you to remove the frame. One thing I wasn't thinking of also, was that they come with their own bag/case hence that'll save quite a bit of money too over a traditional acoustic in a similar price range. Thanks again!

@@Dorette_Roos Helicore Strings are a fantastic match for Electric Cellos (NS Design Cello Strings by D'addario are rebranded Medium Tension Helicore 4/4 Scale Cello Strings that also have for extended Range Cellos a High E & a Low F) or for just about every Cello cause the sound is a good balance between Complexity & Clarity. @@Dorette_Roos The Yamaha SVC-210 actually sounds like an Acoustic Cello cause it's semi-hollow bodied, meaning there's a little resonating chamber picked up by the Piezo Pickup (aka Contact mic) to make it sound more real. Friction Pegs are in fact so outdated that Tuning & restringing is a pain in the neck, especially w/ Fine tuners which are rather heavy. So w/ Geared tuning keys (the Double Bass Type Tuning keys designed for Cello) not only allow you to get rid of the Fine Tuners from the Tailpiece (or swap it out), but by pulling out a String Winder (like you'd do w/ a Guitar, Bass, or any Fretted Instrument), this will make Re-stringing & tuning a Snap. It reminds me of this:kzbin.info/www/bejne/inrNimqaoJ2bfdE Restringing a Clavinet, where that instead of weaving the Strings through the Yarn which gets rather crusty, they use Clavigel which makes restringing a Snap.
@RockStarOscarStern6343 жыл бұрын
@@Dorette_Roos The SVC-210 is way easier to carry than an Acoustic Cello because it's a Travel Electric Cello that folds up. A Boss Kantana Air will allow you to play anywhere you go plus it's wireless so the Transmitter makes it even more compact, & sits in a special charging jack. Restringing & Tuning w/ Friction Pegs is a pain in the neck, but w/ geared tuners & a string winder restringing & tuning becomes a snap.

As I mention in the video - most cellists need to get an end-pin extension to bring the cello up to a comfortable height to stand. The end pin that comes with an electric cello is not long enough - unless you are quite short - like me. I would suggest contacting a luthier or steel works company to make an extra long one - rather than adding a second piece on to the existing endpin - this could make it less stable. One of my colleagues is about 2 m tall and has an extra long endpin that works well for her!

Thank you, this was the exact comparative review I needed of the different styles and brands of electric cello. Really cut through the noise to focus on what matters most: how do they sound? how do they feel? how do they transport? what do they cost? I just moved to an apartment complex, so I've joined the market for an instrument I can practice after hours. Add to that the musician buddies that would love to help me gear up with all manner of amps and pedal effects. After hearing the cellos side by side and your descriptions of their different pros & cons I think I'm leaning toward the Yamaha 210, for the still-warm but versatile sound, and the natural points of body contact. I think the bare minimalist NS takes it a bit too far for my taste. Compact transport is a bonus! Yamaha's product description also mentions a line-in port for CD/MP3 recorded accompaniment, even bigger bonus! So I can literally plug in a favorite recording or a bandmate's demo, and play along in my headphones?! Anyway, of course I want the priciest of the lot.

Those fractional Sized Acoustic Cellos sound alot better if you add Realist Copperhead Piezo Pickups to them and plug them into an amp because due to their smaller bodies they sound rather Tinny & Childish acoustically. Geared tuners would really be another good upgrade because they're easier to turn, plus you don't need fine tuners on that tailpiece anymore. What if NS Design also made an Acoustic Cello that plays like an Electric Cello? Then you could play all the fun things in an unplugged Setting.

Thank you for your review, I enjoyed your perspective on these cellos. I would have liked you to comment on the 'feel' of the strings, meaning bridge height, pressure required (as a beginner), and also do they come in different sizes, for different people sizes? Thanks again ... and yes, in Australian regional centres it's very difficult to find a store to try one.
@Dorette_Roos4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comments Robyn! It is a pleasure! The Yamaha cellos both come with a set of Helicore strings. The Cecelio cello strings are unspecified - but definitely a cheaper set. I like the NS custom strings - they sound good on those cellos. I would actually recommend buying a really good quality set and putting those on for a warmer sound. In regards to bridge height - the NS strings are set up very close to the fingerboard for easy playing, but for me this is tricky as I am use to putting pressure on the strings to create a bigger sound with my acoustic cello - so the habit spill into my electric playing. The other cello have a similar bridge set up to the average height on any acoustic cello. Of course this can be adjusted by a luthier to your preference - same as with an acoustic cello. On the electric cello - you have amplified sound which requires less physical pressure - if that makes sense :) Easy does it. The cellos are only made in regular full size. Hope that was a helpful reply :) X

Obviously the sound quality is everything and I know this can make a tremendous difference. I've heard others playing the same SC-210 you are playing here and it doesn't sound half as good as yours because your amp is so good. I'd like headphones that allow the same quality sound. I think the main effect you are using is available through the instrument itself, without an effect from the amp, right?

Great video. So helpful. I love the sound of the Yam 110, but on all the cello Facebook groups I asked about most acoustic sound, most people coming out in favour of NSD CR range. As you’re well used to them both, if you wanted something that could sound acoustic with a large band on stage, but be used solo with loopers and effects, which would you choose?
@ericoschmitt Жыл бұрын
I'd choose the cheapest, an ipad, the FabFilter bundle, and time to build your own sound out of whatever you have. It is generally easy to make a harsher/metallic instrument sound mellower than get a nasal/dull sounding one and make it richer (such as the brown one that has no body in this video). Tbh I liked how the red one sounds, and considering price I'd try that one, or any second hand cheap one first. Acoustic cellos can vary a lot in sound too. About mixing... I only have acoustic for now, and a Schatten piezo pickup. Without mixing it doesn't sound very nice, and actually the Schatten for bass sounds better when you put under the wing of the cello bridge. Since I bought the cello one after trying what the bassist had... Go to FabFilter Q, cut the frequencies below low C, lower the high end with a shelf, add a dynamic limiter to the low end (piezos are too punchy) - you can do this inside the FabFilter equalizer, and add minimal reverb (close, clear, 50ms, 25~30% mixed with non-reverb sound), thats already 90% good. After this you just tweak until you find it. With the dynamic dots you can even fix things such as open A string being too metallic or whatever. This will give you a very good 'base sound' to which you can later add other effects such as more reverb if you feel like it. FabFilter skills is much more important than which electric instrument you have IMO.

the NS Design sounds muffled in all examples, and the Cecillio sounds a bit tinny. Question, though... did you use the stock strings that come with these cellos or switch them with a good set?

I say the Yamahas win on sound, hands down. The NS sounds thin and hollow by comparison ... a nice sound, but more like a guitar than a cello. I have the Yamaha silent classical guitar, which has a similar design to the Yamaha 110 cello, so I'm surprised that the frame does not collapse, as do the bouts on their guitar (for a small, compact case). You mentioned the 210 is more "compact" than the 110 - would you say the sound "spreads" more on the 110? That would be analogous to my Selmer Mark VI tenor sax (compact, with "core") versus my 1924 Conn New Wonder tenor sax - the sound is huge, opaque, and fills the whole room, whereas the Selmer "throws" the sound, much like an opera singer does.

Hi Dorette! What do you think of the Stagg ECL 44 electric cello? I would love to get a Yamaha but it's a bit pricey for me at a moment.
@Dorette_Roos3 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex! Thank you for the message. I have actually not played a Stagg electric cello before, so I cannot give you a 'first hand experience' reply :) But by the looks and price of it - it seems to be more or less in a similar category as the Cecelio cellos. What would your main purpose be for the instrument? x

Hi Dorette! Thank you so much for this video, it really helped! I went for a secondhand Yamaha svc50 (beginner here). My question is, what bows do you generally recommend for electric cellos?
@Dorette_Roos4 жыл бұрын
Hi Alexandra! I hope you are enjoying your cello! Any decent cello bow will be great for an electric instrument. You don't need a particularly heavy bow for electric instruments.

Great review! Is SVC more silent than the NS design? I got a NS design but it still very loud when playing the A string and wondering whether to switch to SVC
@Dorette_Roos4 жыл бұрын
Hi Shaofan Thank you so much! No its not - the SVC are slightly more resonant than the NS when unplugged. The SVC 110 particularly so. The SVC 210 is a bit quieter but very similar to NS. Maybe you can try a "soft" gauge A string? That should give less sound. Let me know!

@@ProtipoAl Aha sorry I forgot to update that. I brought the Artino Cello Practice Mute and it fits very tight to the bridge of NXTa. The bridge of NXTa is thicker than the classical one so I would recommend a flexible rubber mute instead. As for the sound, it did reduce the resonance a little bit but changes the tone as well.

You said it is easier to play "high up there" (high pitched notes) on the NS Design ... more so than the Yamahas. Why? Thanks, and nice playing!
@DoretteRoos3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeffrey! Thank you for the comment. With the NS Design - one does not have a left side shoulder on the instrument - so you can easily move the arm (and hand) up to the high registers without lifting your elbow or changing the hand position. Making it more comfortable and easier to play very high passages. Does this explanation make sense? :)
@JeffreySaxophoneTallNewton3 жыл бұрын
@@DoretteRoos Hi Dorette! Yes, it does, and thanks for the reply!. I'm 6'6", and tried the Yamaha and NS in a store the other day (unplugged, though). All were in stands, though, so the shoulder issue was not present. I thought the NS felt easier / better to play (not being an actual cellist here; I'm a saxophone player).

It makes me quite sad that the cheapest electric cellos seem to be 3 times the price of the cheapest acoustic ones. I have been a guitar player for 10 years now and wanted to try something different out, but given the fact that I live in a flat, I can't buy an acoustic one for sure. And buying an elecdtric one for such prices seems ridiculous to me if I am not even sure if cello is the right thing for me. I have a huge respect for the instrument, but it needs to be more accessible to beginners who can't go with acoustic imho.

What about playability, action, harmonics, tuning etc?
@Dorette_Roos3 жыл бұрын
Yes definitely topics to talk about! I discussed a bit more of those in my Electric vs Acoustic video. Check it out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5bZnZWNpb9lqdU&lc=UgwZfgM7cMmkZiVdbxN4AaABAg I do talk a bit about the playability in the above video: In general I find the Cecelio very uncomfortable. The Yamaha cellos are the most accurately designed and therefore most comfortable too. The NS is just challenging to get use to - as it does not have any of the usual points of reference.

What do I do if I want my cello to sound METAL
@Dorette_Roos2 жыл бұрын
Ooh yes! Lots of cool effect to do this - either with a sound edit or pedals. And of course 'hard' strings will also give a more metallic sound.
@ericoschmitt Жыл бұрын
Turns out the yamaha comes with too much reverb already. And that the red cello which sounded the worse before mixing, sounded the closest to an actual cello, with some high harmonics instead of nasal. I bet all of them can be made to sound nice if you dedicate time to mixing and finding your own presets. Now considering the red is possibly the cheapest... That's what I'd take. And sandpaper to make it not-red!

Which one is the best for cello beginner?
@Dorette_Roos4 жыл бұрын
Hey Patrick! I would recommend learning cello on an acoustic cello if this is at all an option. I would definitely not recommend the NS for a beginner - this will be too challenging :) The Yamaha 110 is the easiest and most comfortable to play. Or even the cheaper Yamaha 50 version - not part of the review would work well for a beginner. The Cecelios are physically not very comfortable - but as a beginner - you can make good progress with learning notes and basic technique. Hope this helps!
