Very valuable info! Thx! I'm a 65+ senior and 11 weeks post op and want to add a couple of points from my own experience and those of quite a few friends who've had one or both leg TKR. PRE-OP: be sure to do all PRE op exercises faithfully that your surgeon or hospital gives you to do in the months BEFORE surgery. The better shape you can be in before surgery means you will likely recover range of motion and strength easier. The surgeon essentialy straightens your bones, but YOU have to recover the muscles and soft tissue. Also pre-op: prepare your home before.. and borrow, rent or buy and have in place any support products you'll need the day you get home. Painful and not able to bend your leg for awhile. Especially to get on, off bed, toilet, chairs etc. Needed are very likely: toilet seat height raiser, cane, walker, yoga strap or use a belt to lift the leg to the bed first week as it will feel dead till quads reawakened, long shoe horn, sock helper if you wear socks, couch risers if your couch really soft or low, ice wrap as mentioned, extra pillows for elevation, etc. ALL invaluable! POST-OP: If you need to have this operation, you ABSOLUTELY MUST DO ALL EXERCISES DAILY AS PRESCRIBED! At least in first 6 weeks! If you don't keep up, and take even one day off just sitting all day, (once recovered from anesthesia and released home), scar tissue will build so fast every day, and feels like every hour, and you will wreck the surgery and your leg! Do exercises in little chunks during the day if you have too, and attend ALL physio classes prescribed. I know two people who have admitted to me they "aren't very good at exercising", and then realized at about 3 months, they were in growing in serious pain from stiffness and continued swelling, and are now having seriously sad trouble walking. They are both now on waitlists for a second surgery to try to alleviate some of the scar tissue. They also know the surgeon is unlikely to get them back to complete normalcy. If you are not totally committed, this will be a very painful, life altering, waste of time. If you need this surgery, I URGE YOU TO BE COMMITTED to your own recovery! And No disrespect but it's alot longer and harder recovery than hip replacement. I wish everyone considering or scheduled soon, all the best result.
