I can also say that "No Longer Human" was a semi-biography of Osamu's own life (from his perspective, of course), and that it is considered to be his suicide note. Jun Ito made a manga adaptation of the novel, I suggest you check it out it's really cool!

He instantly became my favourite character in BSD. Sure, he looks good, but you can see just how broken he is and that, even though it’s sad, makes him so interesting. He is one if not the most complex character in this Manga/Anime. You know nearly nothing about him. He never shows a side were you think “that’s the real him”, because as I see it, the “real” him is just blank. Completely numb. Not evil, not good, just blank. I also like how they present him as this “funny character” with his lazy side and all the jokes. As someone who’s coping mechanism is making fun of things and joking around when the depressive episodes hit me, it makes me understand him more and the character itself even more tragic. I also think, that when the series ends, he will have the saddest ending of all the characters (if they all survive). While I see the others finding their own path, their own goals and maybe even achieving them, he will probably just wander around trying to fill the void that lives inside of him, which he maybe will never be able to fill.

What makes Osamu Dazai character very interesting is how connected it is to the real life Dazai. Osamu Dazai, is a well known author in Japan, he wrote notable works and one of those is the "No Longer Human", in the anime we all know that it his ability, and Dazai after finishing the "No Longer Human" committed a double suicide with a lady (a lover, srry forgot her name). That makes sense on why Dazai in the anime is kind of suicidal, for more stories, you can look it up on google. Also it is not only Dazai though, almost all of the characters are adapted in real notable persons in the literary world. :D

Also, I REALLLLLY recommend reading all the books featured in the show cause I just read "No Longer Human" and I looove it, currently reading "I am A Cat and it's... hard to follow but good.
