That's exactly the point! Everybody knows the aria in the recording of Maria Callas - but hardly anybody knows "La Wally," and even fewer people know its composer, Alfredo Catalani! Thank you very much for trying to make them better known! I have adored Alfredo Catalani, the trailblazer for Puccini, since I was 15! Try his opera "Loreley," the predecessor of "La Wally" - it always makes me cry!

I will recognize Rigoletto if you wake me up in the middle of the night. It was the first opera I saw as a child of 6 at Lvov Opera Theater. For months I was humming La Donna e Mobile. OK, I was a weird kid, when my peers sand rock, I hummed Rigoletto and danced Gold and Silver waltz around the kitchen table (that was the only record we had) I knew William Tell from the first note. I didn't get La Wally, Lakme was no brainer.

The same happened to me: I was the only teenager in my school who loved opera. While my friends went to a disco I spent my evenings as an extra in our local opera house 😄

@@peterpawlik2495 The same here, when I was 8 we moved to Poland, to the city Bytom in Silesia, home of one of the best, most prominent opera theaters in Poland, Silesian Opera and it became my second home. There were opera, music and ballet productions but also theater which I loved (I played in amateur one in Katowice until I left Poland). I loved Polish operas of Stanislaw Moniuszko and Polish classical music. In that Opera Theater once Wieslaw Ochman was a lead tenor. Oh, I am also a big fan of operetta. Many of my peers laughed at me.. it didn't bother me, I always thought "their loss"

@Nullifidian11 ай бұрын
Had to check this out after seeing your second quiz from a few days ago. 5 out of 5 again. _Guillaume Tell_ is my favorite Rossini opera. I'd love to know how the ending of _La Wally_ was supposed to work on stage. How do you stage an avalanche? Perhaps multiple scrims coming down from the flies with bits of fake rock or snow glued to them so it looks layered or something. It's the same problem with Meyerbeer's _Le prophète_ , where Jean de Leyde's palace in Münster is blown up and the explosion doesn't come after the curtain comes down but instead happens before the final chorus, so you have to depict an edifice in the process of collapse on stage. Recognizing the aria wasn't hard, though, because I have that compilation CD of Callas' EMI recordings.
@peterpawlik249511 ай бұрын
Yeah, always tricky to bring a kind of apocalypse on the stage in a credible way - I would have loved to be a fly on the wall when Catalani showed his opera for the first time to the stage director and set designer 😄

3 out of five. La Wally is still on my to do list. I have listened to the Aria you played though. Just not really in Depth. I don‘t really have an excuse for not recognizing the Magic Flute and Lakmé was pretty much a Lucky hit for me as I‘ve only listened to this one piece. So if you‘d taken it one step further and picked a different piece I would have been lost. But that‘s why I say the only Operas were my opinions matter are Traviata and maybe Lohengrin as Ihave listened to those extensively and in the case of Traviata studied the piano score. Best regards
@peterpawlik249511 ай бұрын
Thank you for your comment. To tell the truth: I would have never recognized Lakme or Guillaume Tell myself if I hadn’t done the research for this video. Originally I had been thinking about adding Traviata to my quiz, showing first an excerpt of „piangi, piangi, piangi o misera“ as the less known piece and then „Libiamo“ as the piece everyone would know. But at least 2 old ladies will be helped across the street now. And that’s what really matter 😄🙏

Very interesting exercice, I am asking for more ! I only got 2.5/5 : Zauberflote (not easy), La Wally (easier) and I made a confusion between Rigoleto/Trovatore (and I first thought it was Traviata ...😅, but at least all this stuff is Verdi from the same period so this is why I claim a half point 😄). But I completely missed Lakmé (was not sure, I never really listened with a great attention to this opera and was hesitating with some Massenet stuff, don't know why) and Guillaume Tell.
