An episode designed to teach acceptance of others does the opposite. How ironic.

“What? A show targeted towards children showing that they can love and accept people who live different lives from them? Now, why would you want to do that?” Seriously, It’s barely a second of them commentating on the fact that the parents are a lesbian couple and they still feel it’s ban worthy.

10:02 Honestly I find this specific episode of Arthur really interesting since it shows how different time was back in the late 90’s and early 2000s was compared to now since I can think of another show who had a banned episode for another show being the following: In the show named 6teen (if anyone doesn’t know what 6teen is, the show is about a couple of 16 year olds working at a mall on their free time and the show was made by the same people who made Total Drama Island) and there were a few banned episodes that never aired in the United States but the one I am referring two was called “Role Reversal” cause similar to Postcards to Buster, the character Nikki had a coworker named Jean who is confirmed to be lesbian and went to a dance with her girlfriend. But to anyone wants to see the episode, I believe retro rerun has the full episode and if not I’m sure it’s on kiss cartoon!

Banned episodes are always interesting. Especially kids cartoons banned episode. They always are interesting.

Dexters laboratory episode being banned makes Arthur on PBS with Bleep look like Cartoon Network were just being pansies in comparison. I still remember the morning I first saw that on PBS.

It should also be known that they tried to ban another Postcards from Buster episode just because the kids Buster was talking to were Muslim. Can't remember if they succeeded or not. As for Talespin, they also banned an episode about a race of Pandas attacking Cape Susette (it's kind of...ehhhh... an unfortunate portrayal), which also managed to be released on DVD. Meanwhile the DVD releases of Tiny Toons restored 2 banned cartoons as well (Elephant Issues and Toons from the Crypt), while the only DVD release of Dexter's Laboratory did wipe out an unfortunate Justice Friends cartoon.

I think it was a mixture of the character being a gay caricature AND the term "Spooner" that put it over the top. One or the other could have slid by, but both was playing with fire. Trying to sneak stuff past the censors is a refined technique, but if you get too (no pun intended) cocky, you'll wind up getting caught. Though, I've seen an episode of Gumball where the Principal wants to blow up the school that has never been removed from air to my knowledge, YET they had an episode where they couldn't say "bomb." And to say nothing of an episode of TTG where Beast Boy, lying suggestively on Raven's bed, gives a come hither gesture with his finger, which also has not been edited out upon repeat airings.

"Shere Kahn is now antrhopromorphic" uhhh yeah they kinda all are??? edit: Meowth was not dressed as Hitler, Meowth is meant to be dressed as a stereotypical police interogator, hence his clothing and the scene where he's trying to get information out of the Safari Zone warden. The only other time I've heard this comparison was when JWittz talked about the episode in his Banned Pokemon Episodes videos, and I'm still shocked people make such a silly mistake.

Japan doesn't instantly associate small, square shaped mustaches directly with Hitler the way we do (even though there was a certain famous silent film comedian that wore such facial hair long before). There's a character in the famous in Japan and unheard of almost everywhere else, manga Kochikame, also a police officer, who has the same little mustache, and I wouldn't be surprised if that's what they were directly referencing.

I always thought Meowth looked like a Chicago Police Officer in that episode.

I don't think it's "such a silly mistake" it's all about perception that's all
@sorcerersapprentice3 жыл бұрын
@@mightyfilm Pretty much. Most people in the west automatically associate tiny muschaces like that with Hitler regardless of the context. Granted, I don't think they were making a Hitler references given the fact it's a kids show. But they were most likely making a reference to that character and police interrogator. Because, like you said, Japanese people have the same association with those as we in the west do. It's not a "silly mistake", just a case of cultural differences. But I also imagine that also contributed to getting that episode banned along with the gun thing, because any character with those would be automatically deemed offensive by kids tv executives here in the west, even if that was never the intention.
@mightyfilm3 жыл бұрын
I'd say the gun thing. I'm not sure which era the dub would have been made, but I get the feeling they could have altered the fire arm to some sort of cartoonish blaster. I mean, if it was early enough, it would have been in the hands of "let's make every gun in One Piece a Super Soaker or have a hammer coming out of it because nagging grannies" 4Kids. But yeah, you simply can't show a gun on kid's television unless it's a laser blaster. They still sell toy guns, kids KNOW what guns are and what they're for, but fiction is so much easier to change than reality. G.I. Joe never had an episode with hand guns, and even Megatron whose toy actually BECAME a gun (until the same pressure in the past few decades changed it to a tank) was some sort of laser blaster in the Transformers cartoon. Yet, Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, and Talespin had realistic guns for some reason. Still, that's the thing about anime. A product will always make references to things from the country of its origin. When it's on the international stage, it all depends on what other cultural things they're exposed to. Kochikame was never localized here, and even then I doubt the 5-12 year olds in this country would have also watched it.

11:06 but why? They had no problem with a g** marriage episode of Arthur!--minus some parental pushback
@moonbased77963 жыл бұрын
Because back when that episode originally aired (being back in 2005-2006) views on gay marriage was very different compared to now since back then only certain states allowed gay marriage where some states were it’s completely illegal to be married with the someone as the same sex/gender as you so that’s why in the more recent episode you are referring to where Mr Ratburn (Arthur’s teacher) marries a man since that aired between 2017 to 2020 if I can remember correctly
