I think my biggest “adult” fashion move was taking better care of my clothing. I used to be the WORST about ironing, but it makes such a tremendous difference. Lint rolling, ironing, removing balled up bits on clothing, and deep cleaning shoes really make even lower end and thrifted pieces look intentional.
@heyheydanidani5 жыл бұрын
This is so true! During my younger years, I don't have the money to buy high end shoes so I end up buying cheap ones, but I clean them religiously and they last me years. So yes, taking good care of your items is also an integral part of ensuring they give you your money's worth.

Just want to say that neutrals can mean different colors for different people. I have made the mistake of investing in black clothing and not understanding that black was not the best color for me. So don't buy black and white just because they are neutrals, instead try to find your own simple neutral palette. This takes time but is sooo worth it, and will still give that wardrobe where everything can be worn together. It could also be as simple as going for grey instead of black or beige instead of white.
@bunny_02885 жыл бұрын
Yes yes yes!!! I think Bethany has a very neutral skin tone, so pretty much every neutral looks good on her. I have very cool undertones, so tan, beige, and cream really wash me out and make me look awful. Gold jewelry also doesn't look good with my skin. Sticking with black, white (some off-white if it isn't too yellowy), gray, and navy for my neutrals looks the best on me. If I want to incorporate warmer hues, I wear it on my bottom half, so it isn't near my face. For example, I would wear a brown or tan skirt with a white blouse. This helps to keep some variety in my wardrobe and to warm up the overall outfit.
@lolsous5 жыл бұрын
@@bytheivy Me too! It's so frustrating. But I find that more shops, especially eco, or climate friendlier brand, carry more earthy tones nowadays, also second hand (online) has a wider selection of colours for basic items. But I guess that it could be a good thing that I find my preferred colours less often, because I can rarely shop and hey that's good for everyone 😅

@@freshiaquanico3126 I would say a lot of trial and error. Just try different "neutral" colours, white, off-white, beige, all greys (warm and cold, light and dark), black, brown and perhaps navy blue etc. Pick what you look best in (according to you) and that you like. I find that the warm/cold undertone is not always good to work with, the skintone can be neutral and really it's only really adapted to light skin tones.

for me the biggest thing that has made a difference for me is checking the fabric of something before i buy it. i find that when i buy 100% fabrics (100% cotton, 100% linen, silk, etc) i have i wear the pieces more often and they hold up better over time. also making a moodboard and wish list helps me shop more intentionally. our world has made us obsessed with newness and the latest thing. now i hold out for the perfect thing instead of settling for something that doesn't check all the boxes

People tend to think neutrals are either black, white or grey. You need to keep you skin's undertone in mind when you buy neutral type of clothes. Its hard to find warm, deep neutrals for warmer skin tones. Burnt orange, tan, golden camel (autumn colours in general) look fantastic with warm undertone. People with cooler undertone look great with light blue, lilac and other pastel colours.
@debless95725 жыл бұрын
I don't worry about colors going out of trend because I pick the ones that suit my skin tone and they are usually autumnal or shades of blue that complement brown earthy tones, so they are not hard to coordinate.

The main problem is that people don’t actually know how to recognize quality, and brands are taking advantage of that. I have no problem investing in quality pieces, but I won’t pay $500 for an item that is worth $200 and similarly when I go into stores to feel the fabric and look at the stitching and finishing I find $300 pieces that are worth maybe $50. I’ve been looking for over a year for trousers (a slim, 30” inseam pair and a wide leg pair, high-waisted) and I have yet to find anything of quality priced below $600. I can’t justify spending $600 on a piece of clothing, and there are no brands subsidizing my purchases or giving me things for promoting them. Love your approach though; it’s definitely on point and good advice!

sovrappensiero1 I know im late to the party and I hope you found some! But why not get some custom made? It will be cheaper than forking out $600
@corkaczarownicy5 жыл бұрын
that is kind of an issue that I encoutered. I have decided to invest in quality pieces, so I went to the brands that are assimilated with quality. One was a chain store, second was a small designer concept boutique. Both pieces, very expensive for me, turned out to be terrible quality, very quickly they lost shape and started to look just very worn out. So now I have problems woth investing, because it seems like I m just paying more for the same quality and I know it is possible to find some really well made stuff, I just dont know how and where. Thats hoq adulting has been going for me.

I was looking for a really good pair of wide leg trousers too. I found one from Vince for about $260. It's more than I would usually spend but i'm trying to build my wardrobe with good quality items that I love.
@crazygossipgurl1015 жыл бұрын
This is a big reason I shop mostly second hand: 1) the quality of clothing being made currently is just not what it used to be, so many shortcuts are taken in production. 2) if clothing makes it to a secondhand store and still looks good/hold up that means it has withstood the test of time and will hopefully continue to age well!

i have mixed feelings about classic pieces that are timeless. i actually don't think many pieces are timeless, they can be marked by the time period they were created. nothing wrong with that. instead, i strive for finding pieces i reach for over and over again, which isn't necessarily a LBD or white button down. building a color scheme is super helpful and finding fabrics that are good quality - helps me build a good wardrobe for me.

Many years ago, I heard someone say that you should have one unique quality piece of jewelry that you can wear with everything. So for example, a necklace or a bracelet you can wear with everything, that is high-quality and has visual interest. I inherited a silver medallion from my mother, so I asked my husband to buy me a good quality long silver chain for the medallion for Christmas. He went to a good jewelry store and got something that was heavy enough that it wouldn’t break if it caught on something. It was all I got for Christmas, but it was perfect, and 20 years later, I’m still happy with it! For many many years, that was what I wore with almost every outfit. Sometimes I added a shorter silver necklace around my neck before it was really the style, just because I liked the shorter pieces as well. I always got compliments, and it felt like the outfit was finished with that medallion- it had been a gift from my father to my mother and both of them have been gone for many years. Most of my jewelry was silver at that time. For our anniversary last year, my husband splurged and bought me a beautiful high-quality 16 inch gold chain that will not break if it catches on my finger. I tend to be hard on jewelry. I have a teardrop pearl that was gifted to me by an elderly neighbor woman. So I wear that necklace with the pearl with almost everything unless I’m wearing silver. The teardrop on the pearl is unique. And the necklace itself reminds me of my husband each day as I put it on. I can layer it with other necklaces or just wear it alone, but it elevates the simple pieces in my wardrobe and gives me a finished and polished look. If you’re just starting out, I agree with Bethany. Get ONE piece that goes with everything and is high-quality. When I first heard the advice, I remembered a really good friend of mine who always wore a pendant she had gotten at an art show that had a funky looking cat on it and was brass. It was obviously beautiful, unique, and expensive, and we never minded that it completed most of her outfits. It represented her and her off-beat taste. That prompted me to ask for the silver chain for the pendant. I also have some just for fun inexpensive things I wear very occasionally, but I strongly recommend getting a couple of higher-quality classics or making something you inherited actually into something that works for you!

This is so helpful. I am currently losing weight, so I don't want to invest in more expensive, high quality clothing until I am at my goal weight. However, I can invest in better jewelry, shoes, purses, and lingerie. I can also look for better quality neutral pieces even if they are lower-end as I start buying my "in between" clothes.

Hi Bethany! I love your content. I would like to know, if it is possible, the brand of your microphone. I would like to invest in one and yours seems really pretty and good quality. Thank you!
