Since you like rye so much, you should try making rye-version of vispipuuro! I like it more than the semolina version. It takes longer to make, but is much more healthier version!

Thank you for the idea! I didn't know that there was a rye version. I'll check into it, and maybe I'll try that one, too.

Did you know that Karjalanpiirakka was originally staffed with vispipuuro or such. Most likely ohrapuuro, Porridge out of barley. We don't naturally grow rice in Finland, you know.

I have gathered that they used something other than rice in Finland years ago. 💕

Here is a summary of the video titled "5 Finnish Habits That Transformed My Health in Midlife" by Anneli Schmidt RN: - **[00:00] Vibrant health in midlife**: The speaker shares five Finnish habits that have significantly improved her health and well-being, which can be incorporated into daily routines by anyone. - **[00:17] Sauna (SAA)**: Growing up in Finland, saunas were part of her life. After moving to Canada, she missed the traditional Finnish sauna until recently. Saunas offer numerous health benefits like better skin, improved heart and brain health, and reduced stress. She encourages people to try saunas, as they are now more accessible globally. - **[03:10] Rye**: Rye is a staple grain in Finland, known for being high in fiber, having a low glycemic index, and promoting gut health. She recommends incorporating whole rye into one's diet, as it's filling and nutritious. - **[04:35] Nature (Forest Bathing)**: Forest bathing (Shinrin-yoku), known for its calming effects, improves mood, reduces anxiety, and promotes heart and lung health. The speaker finds peace in nature walks and encourages people to embrace nature without distractions for its mental and physical health benefits. - **[06:15] Quiet Moments**: Finnish culture embraces silence, which fosters mindfulness and presence. The speaker shares her experience in overcoming the discomfort of silence and encourages practicing quiet moments to reduce stress and improve mental clarity. - **[07:47] Berries**: Finnish berries, like bilberries and lingonberries, are rich in antioxidants and beneficial for health. She recalls childhood memories of berry-picking and emphasizes incorporating more berries, particularly bilberries and lingonberries, into one's diet.

Walking on uneven surface alone grounds and focuses you differently. On that note, how is the Nordic Walking situation in Canada and North America in general? INWA Nordic Walking World Championships were held just last weekend in Lahti. Here are couple of videos about Nordic Walking: "Nordic Walking tour in Tampere", "Nordic Walking History" and "Learning the Basic Technique | Nordic Walking". Vispipuuro or marjapuuro (berry porridge)-as it's also called-is delicious and simple enough to make. Its also one of those dishes you can eat as breakfast or dessert. And there are also different versions one can buy or make, if lingonberries aren't available or you need variate the flavor. E.g. from orange, blood orange, orange and apricot, and orange and sea buckthorn. Speaking of lingonberries, they E.g. increase iron absorption, which is great, because lingonberry jam do go well together with iron rich foods like blood and groat sausage, minced liver steak, liver casserole, and spinach and blood pancakes. Also with cabbage casserole.

About 20 years or so ago, my mom got herself Nordic walking poles here in Canada. No one else had them and we didn't know anything about it. We thought she'd gone off her rocker to put it nicely. But, she was just ahead of everyone. It's very popular here now. I see people walking around with the Nordic poles everywhere. I don't know if they are doing it correctly or anything, but it's certainly not unusual here now. I haven't heard of competitions for it here, but that's not to say it's not happening. Thank you for the idea of using other berries for the porridge. I love lingonberry jam with a lot of different foods too 💕

Thank you for watching! You have my mom's maiden name. My mummo, who you share the same last name, made the best vispipuuro! It's on my list to make a video showing my first attempt at making vispipuuro too!

I know what you mean! When my grandparent's house here in Canada was sold, that was the end of the family sauna! Since the sauna industry is booming here (on the west coast of Canada, at least), I'm sure you'll start to see more and more saunas in the US, too. Hopefully 😀

Try to find " Erittäin hieno suomalainen shampoo" the blue bottle is a must to use after finnish sauna. It really smells like Finland. And eating "Sininen lenkki" with Turunsinappi after the sauna is just WOW ! Koskenlaskija cheese is another piece of finnish heaven. I love the red one

The lenkki with the cheese is a very good memory of Finland I still have. My sisters and I tried to do that when we visited after our sauna one evening. I'll have to look for that shampoo. Thank you for the recommendation!

In Finland we think that if someone talks constantly, he/she is annoying. Well actually you can use other berries as well if you make vispipuuro. I know that my mom used sometimes redcurrant and cranberries as well with the lingnberries. I haven´t ever enjoyd it.But other thong that came to my mind from berries are mansikkarahka and mustikkarahka. You make whipped cream and mix it with quark. Then you add berries in there and mix those there too. Regulary people put there sugar to sweeten it up, but i use erythritol becouse i have ketogenic lifestyle and i don´t eat sugar or carbs (unless those comes from veggies). I have also modified that recipe and i use lactose free turkish/greek/bulgarian/natural yoghourt. I mainly make it from blueberries/bilberries becouse those has less sugar than strawberries. Even that i used to eat "healty" whole foods and make everything from scratch i became insuline resistant and i had lots of overweight. Had to do something about it and now i live ketogenic lifestyle. I´ve been on keto 1,5 years now. My plan was to get rid of insuline resistance and i did that in three months. But i had overweight alot as i begun. My BMI were 36,1 and now it is 22,3. So in 17 months i lost 45kg that about 99 lbs. And of course the health benefits has been amazing.

Hi, and thanks for watching! I think that may go for a lot of Finns! That's how I feel 😀 too much talking is annoying! I didn't realize you could use other berries until I read these comments. Lingonberries in Finland, and here, my mom and mummo used cranberries sometimes. I loved mustikkarahka!! That was one of my favourite things my mom made. I've never tried to make it. Great job on the weight loss!! Congratulations!

@@AnneliSchmidt We were quite poor as i was a child and my mom was single mom for three kids. So we had always had to do what ever we can as making food. I think that for that reason i learned also my own creativity in kitchen and i mostly improvise everything yaht i cook. But it is simple if you know how to cook things and use yor taste as a guide what to use. Best compliment ever was as my daughter said "Dad, why everything here tastes so much better?!" (i am divorced so i always cook for my kids as they are with me).
@AnneliSchmidt
@AnneliSchmidt 3 ай бұрын
I improvise a lot too! I rarely stick exactly to a recipe unless I'm baking and then I try to because I'm not as comfortable with it.
@ArchieArpeggio
@ArchieArpeggio 3 ай бұрын
@@AnneliSchmidt Well i haven´t baked much so that i can´t improvise. Only pizza crust and perunarieska are some thing i can make without recipe, becouse i have done both many times in my life. But since i stopped to eat carbs, i haven´t baked anything. I even meke the pizza crust from eggs and cheese and doesn´t include baking.

Finns see silence as the baseline, where there is no disturbance, so it's all good. If you don't have anything to improve the silence, remain silent. If you have some info, you should break the silence, like throw something on the still water.

why don't you just build a sauna? or buy a telttasauna? we've made several by just making a plywood box (open floor) and heating some rocks on a fire (savusauna)
@AnneliSchmidt
@AnneliSchmidt 3 ай бұрын
I don't have the space to build a sauna and my husband isn't a huge fan of sauna's, so it's not going to happen. I've never tried a tent sauna. I've been in a savusauna, but it's also not my favourite 😀
