Locals trash Giordano's and call it "tourist pizza". Portillos also falls into the "touristy" category to me as well, but both are TERRIFIC... If somebody discourages you from going to either, don't listen to them. Go, they are both excellent. Everybody has their favorite local joint. My advice is start start with those 2 and use those as a base to determine what other places you prefer. I've had all the popular pizza joints, pizzeria due, pizanos, Lou Malnatis... They're all fine and different in their own way. ENJOY!

I'm from a city an hour north of Los Angeles. Chicago has my favorite food scene in the country! Though I haven't been to New Orleans. Chicago's food scene is distinctive, with regional food. Something that almost everywhere in America lacks. My favorite is that classic Chicago deep dish pizza. There are so many good places to go for it. While I prefer Loui Malnati's; Giordano's, Pizzeria Uno, Geno's East are so good too. But the truth is, some of the best Chicago style pizzas are found in mom and pops places, that don't get advertised. Also in suburban Chicago, a large chain called Nancy's can compete with any of the most popular chains in Chicago. For roasted beef, Al's has actually been rated better than Portillo's a few times. I prefer Al's. But either way; its great at both places baby! I'm not into the Chicago style hot dog. But Chicago has some of the best Puerto Rican and Cuban restaurants in the country. And very underrated hamburger and barbecue scene. They also have a very diverse and good beer scene, for those interested. Research where to go before arriving, you won't be disappointed. Then the city itself has so much to offer.

We have a very diverse food atmosphere here as well. You do have to go across the city as everything is spread out but it is worth it. Great barbecue and cafeteria style dinners.

That’s crazy you mention Nancy’s. I just got my haircut next door to a Nancy’s and they don’t mess around. I’ve only had it a few times but it’s been great every time

@@eefeeman Yeah they've got great pizza. Many restaurants. They're actually older than the other larger pizza chains. Except for maybe Geno's. But they don't get any attention.

There are other Chicago foods that even Chicagoans don't know about because they are scared of the south and westside parts of town. Things like mild sauce, rib tips, turkey tips and a good steak and lemonade are chicago staples

I used to live off North Ave on Chgo. We'd slide out to Johnny's quite often. The line might be intimating but it moves fast. Between Johnny's in Elmwood, Roesers bakery off Kedzie & Jimmy's a few blocks south of North Ave on Pulaski, I'm surprised I didn't get to 300lbs...

If you're into fried chicken or fish, try Harold's Chicken Shacks. They have several locations around the city and suburbs, mostly on the south side. They do, however, have locations downtown, by the United Center (my personal favorite), Wicker Park, and Evanston. Harold's specializes in juicy and tender fried chicken (and fish) baskets with fries, two pieces of white bread, and your choice of sauce (optional). Their prices are pretty reasonable and the portions are quite large. But do expect a 15 to 30 minute wait for your order, especially if they're busy, as they cook the chicken to order (so it's fresh)

Good list! For locals most of the time we’re gonna go with a tavern style pizza (thin crust square cut) but man does a deep dish really hit the spot sometimes! Just way too big to eat on a regular basis though

Now that you have explored deep dish you need to try the other Chicago Style Pizza, pub style. Pub style is a thin crust, but not cracker style thin, cut into squares rather than pie slices. great options are Candlite on Western Ave in the Rogers park Neighborhood, Vito and Nick's at 84th and Pulaski, Aurelio's (various locations), Marie's at 4129 Lawrence Ave, Home Run Inn on south Western Ave, Piece on North Ave, and Home Slice. This is the Chicago neighborhood pizza that you got at your local pizzaria or tavern in your neighborhood and is the style that most people who grew up in and around Chicago ate most often.
