Hey Music Junkies,
Today on Pop Fix, let's talk about great songs from the 80s that haven't been given their due. Despite a resurgence of 80s music in TV shows and movies of late (think Stranger Things, Ready Player One, and Glow), our five featured songs never seem to make the cut. These are true feel good songs that showcase a combination of artistic talent with brilliant lyrics and music. Do you agree with The Professor of Rock's list? What passed-over 80s song would you add? I don't think it has ever really been forgotten, but The Dream Academy's "Life in a Northern Town" always transports me whenever I hear it. In 2021, it always fills me with nostalgia for the 80s. Even when it was popular in the 80s, it hearkened back to simpler times and bygone eras. It makes me wistful just thinking about it. The inclusion of orchestral instruments including the cello, English horn and timpani was a stroke of genius. These borrowed sounds from the world of classical music added new expressive possibilities to the music. The crescendos and diminuendos in those long, sustained notes held by the English horn, and the dramatic rolls and hits in the timpani were a kind of reinvention of what a bass line could be in pop music. It was brilliant.

100% agree! In the 80's, I was listening to hair band music, plus a sprinkling of the pop Top 40's. Life in A Northern Town was not the kind of music I listened to, but I taped it off the radio and put it on one of my favorite list tape. There was something about it, so haunting, so beautiful, so timeless. A song that made me feel everything would be OK during my turbulent teens.

"It's My Life" by Talk-Talk, "One Thing Leads to Another" by The Fixx, Loverboy by Billy Ocean, "On the Darkside" by John Cafferty, and "The One Thing" and "Don't Change" by INXS are all quintessentially 80's and transport me back everytime. Love that you closed and recognized General Publics amazing tune, "Tenderness." If you ever sat and watched a KZbin channel that every single time you tune in, you long for those innocent days when you fell in "love" again, for the first time.....or you instantly recall the level of excitement you felt because you were attending a school dance in the cafeteria, then tune in to this channel! It is always a very warm "welcome back" when I watch your channel. This community, OUR community is, without a doubt, one of the best there is!!

"Loverboy" is still my favorite by Billy Ocean! It hit number 2, but isn't played like his other hits! And can we talk about that epic guitar solo? Yes, kids, R&B often had guitar solos in the 1980s! 😂

"Voices Carry" from 'Til Tuesday was a song that I didn't remember from the 80's and then heard it on the radio in the 2000's and thought, "that's a damn good song" so I looked it up and couldn't believe that was from 1985. Would love to hear that more in TV/film.

“Overkill” by Men at Work is my song for this. Never really cared for it when I was a young kid when it first came out. But I saw a version of Colin Hay doing it with a choir here on KZbin and it blew me away. It so gets lost in the shuffle in their history compared with their two big hits from Business as Usual and it blows both of them away. “Heartbreak Beat” from the Psychedelic Furs is another great one. Man, you could end up thinking of a lot of the great songs from the 80’s.

Chaka Khan - I Feel for You ... it takes me back, it makes me feel good, I can't hate it, don't know if its used in shows, it certainly does get radio air time. This is one of those songs that goes up a notch because of production quality which is something I respect very much. It tells me that someone slaved over every detail and sound effect and not just to juice it up but more importantly not to over do it. R&B is a very special; nothing like it.

I just found out Allan Parsons was the “equipment guy” at Abby Road studios when The Beatles recorded “Abby Road”, and he set up all the gear for their famous rooftop performance. Oh, he was also the sound engineer on a seldom heard of little album by some obscure garage band from England. I believe the LP was titled: “Dark Side of the Moon”, or something like that. I mean, seriously!? I always assumed it was a Bob Ezrin.
