It really was excellent! I also have it on disk and rewatch every few years. I think in regards that ultimately illusive, extremely fragile 'weird' or 'uncanny' or focussed 'mystery' element it maintained far better and for longer than either 'The X-File' or 'The Prisoner'. _Any_ explanation was going to be a let down after such compelling groundwork over 20+ episodes but I still deeply regret the nature of the finale. The next year the equally good, if utterly different 'Space: Above and Beyond' would suffer much the same fate.

For the longest time I couldn't remember the name of Deadly Games, but I remember enjoying the show. The only memory I have from watching it is one episode with guest baddie Brent Spiner. He played an old prankster friend of the main character who'd discovered his work on the video game and had programmed in a "secret" level with himself as the boss/villain. So Spiner got to spend the episode hamming around as another game antagonist, & I remember Lloyd's villain being upset with being upstaged by another villain while simultaneously being unable to directly use his game powers on him (since he'd been programmed separately from the rest of the villains). It was a bonkers show but I did absolutely enjoy every minute watching it (even if I can't remember most anything else). Always enjoy your content, keep up the great work!

There was also another cool action series on UPN called “Swift Justice.” Felt like a 90’s update to “The Equalizer” TV show (80’s series with Edward Woodward). I really liked legend the Steampunk aesthetic really caught my eye and the actors seemed to be having fun with Dean Anderson's dry cynicism and Delancy's enthusiasm working so well, I always had a feeling that the show knew that we were in on the joke. Sadly none of the Steampunk shows have every really taken off with the exception of the original Wild Wild West and to a lesser extent Amanda Tapping's Sanctuary series both of which could use an episode of their own. but maybe we'll see something in the future with CGI going some way to reduce the cost of building the Steampunk world.

The ending of this episode is a great point. On top of a lot of hidden gems that fell through the cracks over decades we have very few new shows that are taking risks and while I do enjoy quite a few things based on the existing properties and not jumping immediately on the bandwagon of "they're ran out of ideas", the truth is that even compared to 2010's so far networks and streaming services are rarely making something odd, or niche. Like, despite the superhero fatigue, I love me some weird superhero shows, but want more Doom Patrol and less, IDK... The usual stuff? I am an advocate of The CW, but was there really a need of a new Superman show?.. I mean, you can make weird and interesting takes on existing properties that will be so fresh, they will effectively seem new, like Gotham, but ever since that, Arrow and Legion ended in a span of like two years, there were very few shows like that, so I'm digging up what I missed or barely saw in the 1990's or 2000's like The Pretender (which quickly became an all-time favorite once I've revisited it in the right mind) and John Doe (which is very promising). This feature of "Good Bad Flicks" has been a blessing since I remember a lot of what I've seen and discover a lot of shows I might be interested in. Nowhere Man, Platypus Man and Deadly Games are definitely interesting.

Nowhere Man was such a good show and you mentioned all the shows that it owes it's existence to. Bruce Greenwood was amazing as the "David Janssen/Dr. Kimble" character. The one episode that sticks out in my mind is the one that Dean Jones guest starred as his ... father. I had never seen Jones play such a bad character. I was hoping he'd be a reoccurring character should there have been a 2nd season. Homeboys from Outer Space... There was a UPN show that I knew existed (namely due to the sadly short-lived "Clerks: The Animated Series") that was called "The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer". I actually liked that show! Sort of. It was a neat idea, a comedy set in the Civil War, with a skirt-chasing Lincoln (he had early telegraph sex), a sexually frustrated Mary Lincoln, and a drunken and incompetent Gen Grant. Desmond Pfeiffer (the 'P' was NOT silent) was the only competent member of his administration. Dann Florek from _Law and Order_ played Lincoln. Somewhere some place I have several episodes on VHS. Wish I could find and upload them because, with today's political correctness, the original negatives have probably been burned! Some viewing it today would have a freakin' stroke!

'Nowhere Man' was absolutely brilliant, in certain aspects at least as good if not better than 'The X-Files'! I have seen its influence many times in the years afterwards, most recently with 'The Terminal List'. Greenwood is himself an extremely good and too often overlooked actor. I think his version of JFK from 'Thirteen Days' is the best portrayal of the man there has been.
@snowdenwyatt62762 жыл бұрын
The pilot was top shelf, Greenwood was great, but the show lost viewers after the pilot by having most episodes be interchangeable. Veil wanders into a new town, Veil helps person/people in town, Veil leaves town before "the conspiracy" catches up to him. It was basically the old Bixby "Incredible Hulk" show with a different setup. Aside from the first few episodes and the last few episodes the only memorable one was the episode in the middle of the run that was a straight up homage to "The Prisoner". It would have benefited greatly from having a shorter episode per season count and having a more serialized story line. The last few episodes which had some big story developments had me hoping it would get renewed but it was too little too late as far as the network was concerned.
@morelenmir2 жыл бұрын
@@snowdenwyatt6276 I agree to some extent. I also think it was almost impossible to maintain that delightful but hyper-fragile edge of the 'weird', of 'What the hell is going on???' However they did so better than almost any other show that tried the same gambit in my opinion. In many ways I think 'Nowhere Man's closest antecedent was 'The Invaders' which met a similar fate nearly 30 years earlier. Also, for better or worse that 'Rockford Files'/'Incredible Hulk' style of production was the pattern card of television programmes in the seventies, eighties and through much of the nineties. One of the reasons 'The X-Files' felt so fresh at the time was because it subverted that theme while not entirely breaking free from it. The only other show I can remember that dared to produce an 'arc story' around then was 'Babylon 5' and... I personally don't think they did it very well. **EDIT:** Or to be more fair perhaps B5's arc story was fine, I just personally didn't like the characters, setting or production...!!!

Entertainment Weekly used to list the top 10 and bottom 10 TV shows by ratings every week in the magazine. When UPN and WB debuted, the bottom 10 were filled with shows from both networks. It didn't take long for Entertainment Weekly (published at the time by Time Warner) to drop the list of bottom 10 TV shows. Didn't want to make their new network feel bad.

You have to remember that FOX, UPN and WB ... most of the country ... there was no affiliate to air their shows, so of course they were going to be at the bottom. Even if they won just one of the time slots they were in, they will would have been so far behind the last show on ABC, NBC or CBS that it never would compare. I remember the week that Married With Children actually beat a big network show and then little by little it climbed but it was never more than 5 shows above the bottom shows on the big networks, yet it lasted 11 years. But it was The Simpsons like around Season 5ish that they started getting more affiliates and so they could actually climb to number 30 or even higher sometimes. So the small three networks needed another way to calculate ratings... kind of a moot point now.

I worked master control at a UPN/WB affiliate in the 90s. My job was to watch the shows, run the commercials, etc. We loved Platypus man and Pigsty.

I still have some of my VHS tapes with Nowhere Man episodes. Loved that show. Rest in peace Richard Jeni. His story is heartbreaking. So glad you mentioned him at the end.

The Nowhere Man episode with Dean Stockwell as the guy the conspiracy stopped caring about was great, still remember it all these years later.

I've never heard anyone else ever reference Homeboys from Space! I liked that show but haven't seen an EP since it originally aired. I loved nowhere man and am one of the proud owners of the DVD collection... Best pilot and finale ever.

I am glad that the star of Nowhere Man got more recognition later in the his career because I always thought the show would have been a bigger hit if it was on a better network. My friends and I loved Deadly Games. I wanted to watch Legend but I think it was up against other shows that I wanted to watch more on different channels. In my mind I mix up Platypus Man with DuckMan even though one is live action and the other animated but I remember the stand-up that it was based on.

Hopefully you can cover Dead at 21 in one of these videos. I loved that show and would really like to see it released. Clearing the music rights would be impossible though, especially for a show with such a small following.

That was MTV dipping its toes in scripted TV, right?

I was 8 when UPN launched. Voyager was awesome as a kid in elementary. Homeboys deserves an honest reevaluation. Great vid with honest, personal insight and memories.

Good job with this, I'd not heard of any of these and I try to pay attention to obscure media. I'd always championed for greater success for Richard Jeni. I always thought he'd have done better in the Tom Arnold role in True Lies than the forgettable role he got in The Mask. I'll search that one out. Nowhere man is a good concept that would've done better in a post-Lost TV landscape. Very cool. And thanks for the bit at the end. Too much sadness in the world, do everything you can not to add more. ❤️

Loved Nowhere Man. I put it right after Firefly on the list of shows that should have gotten a 2nd season and didn't. I managed to get the "Disenfranchised Edition" made by fans long before NM got an official release, which in many way exceeded the official release. Doubt that's any easier to find.

LOVED Nowhere Man! It was filmed in Portland OR, near where I lived at the time it was aired. Weird seeing areas on TV that you see in real life every day...
