Expectation is a thief of joy.
They can often tarnish our experiences if we're not careful. Whether that be with people, places, or perfumes, it is important that we are mindful of our expectations--and more importantly--of the fact they will be unmet or incompletely met most of the time.
We cannot expect a fragrance to be anything other than what it is. So when we are met with disappointment upon finally smelling an awaited scent, we can't blame it on the fragrance.
Since I've been able to better acknowledge this, I've started revisiting fragrances with which I previously had an unpleasant first experience...and I feel an openness and a softness I didn't have before. As a result, the fragrances smell a lot different than my mind was trying to make them smell initially, and I really enjoy them! It's almost night and day.
Today's video covers 5 fragrances that fall under this experience for me, and I hope it will resonate with you.

Very relevant point about "anchoring" yourself to a single particular fragrance note in a formulation and forming expectations. This is something that I used to do all the time and waste my money. Once I started to learn more about particular genre's of fragrance as well as how notes come together to form accords I almost never end up with something I don't at the very least like now.

Great video. I love how freewheeling, light-hearted yet well considered and self-assured your delivery of opinions is. I've also noticed that you're philosophical and conceptual as a thinker, which is obvious because you don't rattle on about fragrances as trendy esoteric accessories and not much more. You talk ABOUT olfaction and the psychology behind fragrance collecting, fragrance construction, lifestyle etc. It's a very clear difference between you and other fragrance channel 'hosts'. I gather all fragrance in life interests you and you've probably been like this since you were much younger, which makes this a neurological and psychological area of difference between you and the majority of the crowd. Some people aren't that sensitive to fragrance in life, in general. We all assume everybody is like us, but it's a marked difference. Going around sniffing things, anything...everything. :D You're most refreshing in how you talk about fragrance. Also, quick response: Acknowledging the accuracy and fundamentals of your first point is why delivering our unrepentant, subjective responses to fragrances is such fang-toothed fun! There's no 'bad' fragrance as you said: someone will find something that fits the bill perfectly or because the composition reminds them of a very specific memories which are unique their lived experience, cultural background, ethnic background etc. Being emotionally mature enough to be at peace with the fundamentals of subjectivity is why we ought to all keep a light-heart about a stranger poorly evaluating a fragrance we enjoy: we each have every right to expand on why WE don't like something, knowing someone else WILL and so c'mon, our opinions are nothing to get panties in a twist over. Imagine having to provide a 'trigger warning' for ripping 'Delina' by Parfums de Marly apart! :D Ooooooh, it's a deliciously choppy ocean to jet ski over; we all know we will ruin someone's quiet breakfast on a nearby yacht but it's way too much fun to let it rip! Someone will love what you react badly to and consider a nasty mess, and someone will crinkle their nostrils over what you consider a masterpiece. My favourite thing is listening to someone positively SAVAGE one of my aesthetic joys or beloved fragrances-- so long as they don't get personal and insult my taste passive-aggressively. It's an art form. I'm here for it! I'm impossible to offend. I love strong personalities that make me laugh. Much to say in response to you in the spirit of mutual exchange but I'll reign it in. Great video, thumbs up.

I’m glad you share your journey. I recently got to 110 fragrances. For What? I had to start asking myself. So I find myself using 20-25. I’ve decided to cut the frags down to 50-55. Still too many but more than enough. Quality over quantity. Being different and just having my own scent and flavor.

Hey Mr. J. This will be odd but try spraying the Carlisle on a winter coat or sweater and coming back to it the next day. I did that last winter and it was intoxicating. I realize some fragrances smell so different and more pleasant to me in the air on others than in my own scent bubble. I get that from a lot of ambroxan heavy scents especially. I got Bleu De Chanel edp as a gift and I didn’t care for it at all. I thought it smelled feminine and was highly disappointed after watching so many reviews. Pretty much had the same experience but I just blind bought it lol. Didn't like it too much at first, but these days it's my favorite of all time. When it comes to the "Big 3 Blues" Sauvage and Dylan Blue don't even come close to BDC.. Dylan Blue is half the price though so it's understandable that there's a quality gap.

Great video. Tiziana Terenzi Spirito Fiorentino is the Fragrance that I couldn’t stand when I first smelled it. I haven’t worn it in a while but I LOVE it now. I was also not a fan of Burberry Touch. It had a strong resemblance to pencil shavings that was really hard to get past. Although I can still pick up that nuance, I really like it and I wear it often, especially to the gym. Last, but definitely not least, Armaf Sillage (and Silver Mountain Water). I couldn’t stand that sharp metallic/floral smell. Now…there’s something about it that’s unique and alluring. Not to mention, it has INCREDIBLE PERFORMANCE!!! Stupid fresh and long-lasting!!!

Nice list Justin. That's partially why I'm not super into "first impressions" type videos because honestly, a fragrance can change profiles over time or take time to settle -- like the aging of wine almost -- and what you may love at first, you dislike later...OR what you're not crazy about at first, you end up appreciating later. On average, I give fragrances (even decants and smaller samples) about 2-3 weeks until I can give a verdict...unless I just hate the fragrance from the start. I've had a few fragrances do that to me where I was like, "Eh, this is okay" to "Wow, this changed nicely!" As far as a few of the fragrances you have shown here, Viking Cologne had a lot of hype surrounding it and it felt more like another take on something like Terre d`Hermes to me (but it still smells nice) and Carlisle is very much like something between Mancera's Red Tobacco and Alexandria's Hafez 1984...so these are profiles that I've already come across that don't "wow" me but they are very nice.

When I first got Dior Fahrenheit, I hated it. It smelled like slightly gassy musk and I knew that it was supposed to have a gasoline accord and it was musky, but I wasn't expecting it to be so basic. I wondered if I had a bad bottle, considered returning it, but kept wearing it and I started to pick up more notes. It started to smell more robust, and I realized that what happened was bc I bought it at Walmart, people weren't buying it so it was probably on the shelf for years. It could have also been that my nose wasn't trained to sense those notes because I'd been wearing such basic stuff for so long, but it changed my opinion on fragrances permanently.

For me it was Amouage Bracken Man, i got it in a whole load of samples i got because it sounded like I would enjoy it but my first impression was an overbearing smell of cloves. I gave the sample to a work colleague, i smelt it on him at work! it smelt great off his skin, I could still detect the cloves (no getting away from that) but somehow it worked. It is quite a powerful scent and not one for the shy but there is something special about it. Beach hut man is another with a strong note of toothpaste kind of mint (but that one works for me).

For me Viking was love at first sniff. Remember being in perfume store with all Creeds standing in the middle with nice lighting from the bottom of each bottle, and there he was standing with bright red, intense colour in the middle. It was the first I gabbed and tested on the wrist. Minty, pepper opening with rather tart citrusy, going into spicy, powdery lavender. Sharp, drilling, undoubtedly masculine and timeless style of old type barber style fougere. These were made in 2017 but have that oldschool DNA. I appreciate they added tonka in the base to give sweetness and softness with musk. Vetiver and cedar give masculine, woody feeling. Personally however I would rather have oakmoss and patchouli to give depth and earthy impression. I would also stick some salt or sea notes in the middle or opening. You know Vikings after all were masters of the sea. I think it would feet perfectly. Ultimately this is in my top 10 and I will alway have it.

Liked the video! How is that FdB compared to Black Afghano? That one didn't suit my skin, smelled like cheap weed and air freshener for the first 3-4 hours. Might have to retry that Creed. I got a decant before but didn't care for it. On my skin it wasn't bad, just a bit bland and boring. But my nephew really liked it, so I gave it to him. My most recent turn was Amouage Memoir. It was ok on first few tries, but lacked depth and performance seemed to lack a bit also. Just ok, nothing special. Not worth paying 250 euros for. Last monday after showering I sprayed it on as a sort of dumb reach to empty the last few sprays and it was simply gorgeous! Nowhere near as flat and boring as I remembered. Had some punch also. Ordered some new samples while I'm contemplating buying the full bottle My biggest turn from dislike to like was Tuscan Leather. I absolutely hated that one on my skin, first one ever I just had to scrub off. But as it was a gift from my girl, I kept it. Gave it a try months later, on a really cold day, only 1 spray. And it was really good! Now, it's a staple in my cold weather rotation.

One that I loved, but I think a lot of people wrote off is Initio's Oud for Happiness. They wanted Oud for Greatness v2. I bought Comandante when I was newer to perfumery and wasn't happy with it because I thought it was too similar to Alexandria II. Now I wonder how I ever came to that conclusion. I don't really repulse scents, but one that left a bad vibe for me when I first tried it was BDK's Gris Charnel. Demi Rawling had blown it up in my head and I was expecting the moon with it (not the Frederic Malle scent lol). Didn't pan out. I enjoy it now - it's still not a love, but it's good and I can see why it would be a great all-year scent for women. I was expecting you to include Carlisle and I still don't enjoy it.

I love Issey Miyake as house overall. I think it's really underrated. Men Or Encens (Gold incense) is probably my favourite. It has all I love. Leather, wood, spices, vetiver and incense. For me this is best men rose frag I have ever tried. It is really masculine as rose is not dominant here (although it sometimes coming out quite pungent). I like the nuit line also but some of them are kinda to sweet for me. Or Encens doesn't have any vanilla, tonka or even citruses. It's dark, it's dry and spicy, woody and stand out and last long with good projection. As for Viking Cologne, I am same as you. I love original and along with Royal Oud it is my favourite from Creed. I don't hate VC and even like as it's not overwhelming citrusy for me, even though it contains quite a lot of them, I am getting minty pepper mainly in the opening. Unfortunately it's not worth the money for me as it's only suites for hot summer, because in any other conditions and temperature you can wear the original. Projection and longevity are rather average, so for the money not worth it at all.

Dior Homme 2020 is one that I just haven’t really decided on yet. I really like the intense version I think the iris makes it softer. The Dior Homme 2020 is just so dry and woody and for me it’s intense to wear and I’m not sure how people react to it. Maybe with more wearings I’ll come to enjoy it more but right now it’s a little more challenging for me.

I got the Carlisle in a PdM discovery pack and I love it. I keep switching between Herod and Carlisle, Layton and Pegasus, and sometimes the Galloway(SMW?) and Percival. I love some of the Tom Ford’s as well, and Creed, but all the PdM’s are amazing. For my money, the Creed are the most difficult ones. I have Royal Oud, which I love or hate depending on the day, and am still trying to figure out why everyone likes GIT, SMW, etc. MI is good but light. Is Galloway an SMW clone? It seems like a better version to me.

I wrote of Green irish tobacco by happyland. At first I tried the sample and was disappointed to find that i disliked the smell of it. I was talking with a friend online and I said it smelled gross on me, I was getting a feeling like I didn't shower or something. I think it came from the fact that the green note in my head connected with my disgust of the smell of weed. But, after I gave it a 3rd try it suddenly smelled amazing. Now, I own a full bottle and it's one of the few colognes that I love coming back to smell on myself. AND I like to smell it more then my samples of green irish tweed and tom ford tobacco Vanille. In fact, I dislike Tom ford tobacco Vanille. And i tried really hard to like it but can't.

Justin, how did you fancy the original Viking? I really like it but I think the 'Cologne' version is lacking some of that depth - it's going a little more mainstream. In my view Viking proper is 100% worth the cash. Turnarounds... probably oldschool chypre-green fragrances? I think Ralph Lauren Polo ('Green' but it's really the original and best!) holds UP. I would say the peak of these is a little after that era with Bois du Portugal

Carlisle sure love at first sniff. One fragrance that I effectively "hated" at first sniff (but exactly what you mention, because of expectations,) was Zara Rich Warm Addictive. I was expecting tobacco, and it was mostly a sweet coconutty vanilla fragrance. Smelled to me like some house candles. Made me mad and mistrustful of reviewers, but for whoever likes vanilla and coconut in fragrances, it is a great cheapie. Now if interested in actual tobacco-smelling fragrances, absolute misleading choice, look elsewhere. Have written it already: to me It belongs as much in a "tobacco collection" as Bleu de Chanel would in an "oud collection" :)
