What a brilliant way to cook a large amount of bacon with much less mess!! I bought an Instant Pot on sale and I like it but I've gone back to my slow cooker because it is easier to clean (the IP insert cleans easily but the lid and silicone ring are more work than the smooth top of my slow cooker) and is much more forgiving if you don't hear the timer. But I wonder if you could marinate your carrots while cooking them in a pressure cooker so you wouldn't have to do a separate step and it certainly is much quicker. Also, if cooking smells bother you, the Instant Pot might be the answer as the smells are sealed in (although I don't know if the bacon would turn out crispy ). Hmm, now that I say that, maybe I should revisit the Instant Pot - when I cook dried beans overnight in my slow cooker, I wake up hungry from the smell! Nom Nom Paleo has embraced the IP so that might be the place to find recipes to try while you have the loan of one.
@TheFrugalMinimalist5 жыл бұрын

I have an instant pot that my niece lent me, but I have yet to try it. I know many LOVE their instant pot and I know one of the features is the crockpot slow cooking setting. I hear they can sear and pressure cook as well! I think it would depend on your usage! One fellow YTer actually returned her instant pot because of the footprint of the space that it took up, so that may be another consideration for you. For me I like how the slow cooker is "dumb" and doesn't have a lot of features to break.

Did you know a rice cooker also can hard “boil” eggs? Wet a paper towel, wring a bit, place in rice cooker. Place eggs on paper. Cover and turn on rice cooker. When “warm” is lit, keep that way for 7 mins. Refrigerate for one week in shell, or one week peeled and stored covered.

Have you ever regrown the root ends of any of the veggies? I found it fun. Kind of like BOGO.

I'm sorry 4 hour for very little bacon. That's not thrifty $$ electric wise. When it take a fraction to cook stove top. Turn an exhaust fan on. Open windows. I LOVE a Slow cooker for heavy meats insignificant Stews and such. But for a tiny bit like bacon and garlic,onions and eggs. Hmmmm. That money wasted. Please open windows . But it's your choice.

Well worth it! 101°outside, A/C very expensive. Using slow cooker helps keep heat down in the house. I try to use stove & oven mostly in cooler/cold weather & then the heat cuts down on heating the house.

Crockpot: about 20 cents electricity for the entire cooking time.

Hi Sandy I did a measurement with a kill-a-watt to measure electricity usage of my pots and it's 32 cents for 8 hours on low. It's worth it for me for the bacon! 😂. For the rest, you're absolutely right and normally I load up the pot with other items, like I'd throw in potatoes to steam along with the eggs and garlic. But for the video I cooked them alone to give accurate cooking times. Not sure how I could fit in more with the onion, but you can bet if I could I would! 😅

@@TheFrugalMinimalist well you are good for investigating being fugual. I didn't do the math it's just seemed wasteful. Maybe I'm the one that should use mine more . Lol I guess the time it took seemed extreme to me. I just want to get it done and over withfor just a little bit. Thanks for replying. I'm a fan. Learning a lot from you. Thanks

electricity costs vary area to area. suspect it's higher in California--but that's still quite a crockpot savings. rates in my area are pretty good.

btw, chewing gum while you chop onions will really help you avoid tears.

I do this in cold weather for sure. But during the summer it’s nice to be able to move this outside or in the garage to keep the heat out of the house!

I’ve always been worried how much electricity will cost running slow cookers for prolonged period. If it will raise my electric bill not sure if it is worth it

It looks the same as if you made hard boiled eggs and didn't rapidly cool them... They get that green tinge from the sulfur in the eggs. ✌
