Thanks for this video!! Its timed perfectly. Last year I planted blackberries, cherries x2, banana x2, nectarines 🤞, mandarin 🤞. Gonna add blueberries and maybe a dwarf apple. I'm working on turning our old trampoline into a hoop greenhouse for the veggies. Your videos are always straight to the point with as little fluff as possible. From a mom of 4 kids, thank you. 😄 🤘🫶

Great video Justin. Yep, I enjoyed the roll....you always make such informative and lighthearted videos. I grew up in Alabama and plums grew by the side of many back roads. So plentiful and So delicious. I have planted 6 Peach trees which are doing well and 6 apple trees which have been affected here in Kentucky by Cedar Apple Rust. I sprayed with Copper solution and will again in the spring. I was very sad. They looked Great in the Spring and then they Didn't. Maybe I'll try plums. Thanks Man! Cheers!!

Justin, I planted a plum tree 20-some years ago, and the plums were so delicious, however, it had to be removed when strong winds (actually a tornado aloft) broke it off at the ground. We also lost our dwarf cherry tree in that freak storm. Most fruit trees and berry shrubs don't do well in my heavy clay soil... so now, the only fruits I grow are strawberries, in a raised bed. I hope you're having a great week! ~Margie 🤗🌱🍓

Even if I had a lot of yard I think I'd just go with the dwarf varieties of fruit trees. I don't need 500 pounds of apples every year and I don't want to have to break out the ladder every time I go out to pick one :P.

Great suggestions! I have Arapahoe blackberries, they are very good. Apache is also. Both are thornless, which makes netting them much easier than thorny varieties. # 6 for me would be figs. They are great fresh or cut in half and dried in a dehydrator. # 7 Fruit recommendation is Fuyu Asian persimmon. They are great straight off the tree, plus if you slice them in thin wafers, they dehydrate well so you can enjoy them later. The dried wafers are delicious by themselves, or chopped and added to cereal or salads. Apples don't do well in my area, SE Texas, zone 9b. Persimmons take their place for me. Peaches, nectarines, and citrus also do well here. Table grapes don't do well either due to Pierce's disease. Thanks for a good video.

Surprised by the question about plums - are they less common in the US? I know currants are quite unknown there due to them being banned for a long time, but hadn't realised plums were considered unusual.
@yellowdog762jb

The plums in the stores are picked early. While they look ripe, they are often very sour. So most folks that have only had store bought ones don't have a good impression of them. Store bought peaches and nectarines are only slightly better. I have both, and it's ridiculous how sweet and juicy tree ripened fruit is. I have 2 young plums also, I'm hoping for fruit next year. I love fruit, but I don't think that I've ever had a current.

@@yellowdog762jb We have the same problem in the UK with store bought plums for much of the year when they’re shipped in from overseas and are rock hard. When our own plums are in season though, totally different story. So delicious. A lot of gardens have a plum tree here too, most commonly Victoria. Re currants, they can be a bit tart so are generally used to make jams and jellies and desserts, rather than just eaten by the handful. Very high in vitamin c and other good stuff. We all grew up drinking a blackcurrant cordial called Ribena which is probably what the fruit is most known for 😂

Some rabbit eye blueberries are partially self fertile, but 2 is still better. You might look into a fruit tree on dwarfing rootstock if space is limited. If you are in the south, Satsumas (tangerine), fuyu persimmon, and peach/nectarines all can be had on dwarfing rootstock. Most are self fertile, but double check your variety. Buy it from a locally owned nursery, not a box store.

New to NC last year from CA. Tried some blackberries last year but lost them all to bugs, squirrels and sun scald (and not sweet like the ones I had in CA); not replanting. I put in blueberries last fall and they are covered in buds and flowers right now. I did cover them during the hard freeze in Dec and again right now cuz I don't want to lose the flowers. Should they always be covered for frost/freeze? Do Braeburn apples grow well here and, if so, what would be a good pollinator (not crabapple) for them? Love your enthusiastic, to the point videos!

Hi Justin, Great video on fruiting trees and berries. I planted two peach, two plumbs, two blueberries, two baby cake blackberries and two raspberries, and three apple trees two years ago. All doing well. North Georgia. What do you think about pink lady and gala apples? This question is off subject but I want to ask you, are Japanese privet shrubs very cold 🥶 tolerant? Join a local fruit tree club and get a cutting from a complimentary variety. Then graft on a section or two to your existing tree. That should take care of your lack of cross pollination. But you need to get a variety that blooms at the same time as your current tree. Someone local can help you. You'll be eating fruit in a year.

Love plums ! Can’t find the type that used to grow wild here anymore and I’m unsure of name. They were small about the size of the 50 cent gum balls and close to the size of a ping pong ball. They’re super juicy, red with a golden blush. The closest I’ve been able to find to them are the verycherry plums. I’d love to plant some fig trees and yellow teardrop mangoes as well. Currently I have these trees, bushes & vines: Orange Lemon Pear Peach Persimmon Grape (muscadine) Blueberry Pineapple (still a baby) Blackberries Do you know the name of the plums I’m talking about? I’m originally from Mississippi we’re blueberries are one of our top exports, However we have huckleberries growing in the woods there that have at LEAST 10 times more flavor. Why do people not grow huckleberries or cross them with blueberries to make blueberries better? I would pay a huge price for huckleberries at the grocery store. I don’t even bother with blueberries, So if cost is the issue that may explain it but apparently I don’t think people have tasted huckleberries or they would know it’s the same difference between a potato and an apple Also what part of the south are you from I live in New Orleans and I don’t know if for example the apple trees you talked about today grow here. There’s all sorts of citrus fruit, but I’ve never seen an apple tree. That doesn’t mean there’s not any.
