A couple of years ago I started sketching and painting watercolors again after about 40 years of not doing it. I was slow out of the starting gate and I did not like what I was doing, especially with my painting. I started taking some watercolor classes at local colleges and from local artists. That got me started. About two years ago I discovered the classes in KZbin. That helped a lot. As part of that I found Udemy. I could afford these classes and I get to keep them so I can go back and retake them. I have now taken classes in watercolors, straight drawing, and colored pencils. The instructors are fairly easy to follow and if I think I missed a point or two I can always rewind and go over the material again. I am following you and several other KZbinrs and I find that very helpful as well. Thanks for the help you have given me. I wish you continued and great success.

Hi Andrea - I am hoping to do a video on this soon, waiting for my boxes with all my different sketchbooks to turn up from the UK....still a month or so to go they tell me. At the moment I am really enjoying the Hahnemuhle watercolour sketchbooks but they are not to everyone's taste. For me the price is very good (not to expensive so I don't feel too precious about it) and also the paper suits my style of sketching nicely.

Great ideas, thanks!! I have a large sketchbook where I do themed double spreads filled with small sketches, like churches, rural landscapes, animals etc. I use different techniques and sizes and although it’s only for practice the spreads actually look quite pretty in the end 😊

I have a question..Maybe its been answered before . Here goes…what if you take classes, in person, travel extensively to be a part of the teachings , learn from a certain artist how they do their art, would that be considered copying if that’s what you paid a lot of money to learn? How can you make it your own if they have a very specific style ? I would love to hear any feedback on this subject .Tia

Hi Christine - this is such a good question. Especially when you are learning from someone who has such a distinctive style. I think you take certain elements they teach, using certain supplies or certain techniques....and try to amalgamate it into your own way of doing things. So rather than replicating someone else's sketching style...take elements of it and try to blend with your own way of doing things OR perhaps blending it with other techniques you have learned from other sketchers. So you take a little piece of something from multiple places and mix them together....does that make sense/help?
