Simple Urban Sketching

Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!
A couple of weeks ago, I showed you how you can virtually travel and draw. We used Google Earth to travel anywhere in the word.
Today, I'd love to take you on a trip yet again. This time, we'll be using the website window-swap.com. On this website, people from all over the world are submitting videos, recorded from their windows.
Let's find a window with a view to sketch. It'll feel like you're visiting someone at their home in Turkey, the UK, the US, Sweden or wherever you choose to go, and stare out of their window to draw the view.

This is such a good idea when you can't get away, but you want to sketch something out of the familiar! It's always hard to balance what we know (or think we know) about the subject with what we immediately, abstractly see. We think using some long, continuous lines really works here, and helps add fluidity to a contour that has a lot of abrupt angle changes. This is great coaching for artists who need to loosen up a little!

Less smudging, and you can actually see what you've drawn and where you are going instead of essentially working blind. Bonus bonus tip: turn ringbound sketchbooks upside down so the rings aren't in the way of your drawing arm.

Hi Koosje Finally I got round to sketching! Yay. All was going well, I was doing it daily but then…. I did a sketch and I was really happy with it! In fact so happy with it, it scared me and now I have a block about it and can’t seem to get through this block I have. Sounds crazy huh? Think this block is scaring me as I don’t think I can do another drawing as good! I really did surprise myself with my sketching and now can’t pick up my sketch book, any suggestions would be greatly received…. 🙂xxx

Maybe you could set as a goal: "today, I am going to make a really bad drawing". That sounds simple and kind of ridiculous, but it WILL take the pressure off. It takes away the idea that you need to top your last drawing and that you need to compete with yourself. Go and make something ugly, grabbing all the colorful tools you can get your hands on, and PLAY. The result is supposed to be bad, but also, you'll be loosening up again and maybe you'll even have fun.
