My 8 year old son has been playing out for the last 5 years. Every chance he had he would go stand in the net. So this year at Christmas we bought him all new goalie equipment. He watches your videos and anything else to do with playing goalie on KZbin. But he loves your videos. They are always the first ones he goes to and has learnt so much from your shared info. So thank you. I enjoy watch as I am the one on the ice coaching him. As his coaches do not spend anytime with their goalies. They have a different goalie every week. So my son on gets to work at home and practices. As well as when it comes his turn in the rotation. But you have been such an inspiration to him. So I thank you and keep the videos coming.

I'm definitely trying the dangler noise hack. For suspenders, I actually wear mine under my chesty, and cross them so they don't slide down my shoulder during play, because I don't like the restriction of having them over my pads, but I need them to keep my pants secure.

Hi Wayne, in the 1st and 3rd periods I periodically spit/pray water to the outside of my posts. Then when I clear snow from my crease I push it over the water. As it freezes the ice becomes rougher impacting any wraparounds attempts.

Clear sock tape at the tie points on a dangler will keep it quiet & help keep it from breaking along that weak point
@rhinosaurus01
@rhinosaurus01 5 жыл бұрын
Great tips!!! Dangler noise is at the top of my list for annoyances, I used clear sock tape on the inside of the dangler and also up at the top where it laces to the mask. Helps a ton and is clear/invisible, but doesn't take away as much sound as your setup. I hook my pants to my chesty too, I use a carabiner clip so it absolutely doesn't come off/unclip mid game. I'm Definitely gonna try the lace tip, I had a pair of Reebok 20K skates with the pump which helped a lot mid game but a simple re-lacing would definitely do the trick. Cheers!

Add Bounce dryer sheets from the laundry room to your bag. It helps pull moisture and leaves thing smelling better. Stick them in your gloves, bottom of the bag, skates, etc. Just make sure you get them all out before going on the ice. Don’t want it looking like you got TP hanging out your gear.

I always dry out my equipment using electric fans between skates. Really helps, especially if I'm playing on consecutive days. On the other had, I find my stick glove is too slippery if it gets really dry, so I rub in a little water to the palm when I pack my bag before I leave for the rink.

Roller hockey goalie here, it's a pain in the 5hole to tie toe ties on inline skates, most goalie just don't even do it, but coming from ice I like the control they add, so I spend a good hour tieing mine just the way I like them, then just leave the skates tied to the pad, makes life way easier, put on skate, then just kneel down into the pad and strap it up, no need to fiddle with toe ties again!

@connorschuh7827
@connorschuh7827 5 жыл бұрын
I’m not talking about clear tape for hockey I mean like scotch packaging tape for shipping boxes. Scotch tape is better because you can cut two pieces the length of the shaft and then put one on each side and fold the extra to the other sides if that makes sense. Using scotch tape eliminates bumps and it is more smooth and harder to tell it is actually on the stick

If your local rinks provide public skating times, start there. Even with just goalie skates, getting a feel for skating in them can go a long way. If they rinks don't have any open ice time (stick practice) see if you can find a Beginner League or a Clinic to start out with in full gear. Hope this helps and good luck!

Aggressive goal crease screen, push the attacker down low on one side of his or her hip. This steers the player in the opposite direction, away from the shot or towards the shooter. Most players do not like to be steered towards the shot and will give you room to work for the rest of the game. Its also a good way to clear a screen just before the shot. You can also use your stick between the attackers legs, when things get crowded, to pivot him or her left or right. I find, most players do not like to be controlled on screen shots and it also can put them off balance, thus making it harder to play a rebound. These techniques need to be applied subtly but with force near the time of the shot, passive then aggressive. I've never been called on the hip push when an attacker is crowding the crease. But the stick steer is a little more riskier and there is a good chance that your seasoned D-man has it already going on.

My tip/hack is I don’t use skate shoe laces to tie/tighten my skates. Instead I use Nash Option B Velcro Straps(3 on each skate). I avoid having to take forever lacing my skates up, avoid any lace bite and the fact my right foot is slightly shorter than my left foot. It has made big difference for me in comfort and cutting down time to get ready for a game.

Thanks for your comment! That's interesting! Thinking back to HS in the 90's, my pants were pretty loose too without suspenders. I think the difference today is the added bulk of goalie pants coupled with added "stuff" around leg pad knee locks and leg channels and I started to prefer a shorter pant that stayed in place to minimize pad interference.

Most lower end pads work great for most people, though I would look into the best glove you can afford as no one likes hand stingers. That being said, it's all about feel. If you like the way they feel then you will have a blast playing. Helmet, glove and chesty is where you want to spend the big money if you can. I played with "craigslist specials" for about 1.5 years and replaced the gear as I went with better gear as I could afford it.

I don't have any direct experience with that particular Bauer Vapor line, but Nathan is right on with his thoughts on entry level gear!

If you don't want to spend a lot of money try starting with used gear. Almost all my stuff is from Kijiji (popular local buy/sell site in Canada) and if you keep your eye on the ads you can get some great deals. I got my pads and gloves (14k Reebok P4) for a total of $80 and love them and am still using them almost 5 years later

@VOGoalie
@VOGoalie 5 жыл бұрын
Actually, I think stick size should be based more on your butterfly than on your height/stance. IMO, I use a shorter paddle as it works better when in the butterfly for both control and blocker positioning based on my body proportions. That being said, I'd try to go with the shortest stick possible that still feels comfortable in your stance. Also, different manufacturers are all slightly different. I'd think for you either a 25" or 26" but really, that's just mostly an educated guess! Best bet is to try some inexpensive sticks to determine what size feels right for you!

That's interesting, I'm 5'7" as well, and if I use anything less than a 26, I get picked apart high stick. It sucks because it opens up my arm from my body in the butterfly, and my stick handling isn't as good, but it stops the high stick side shots.

@@VOGoalie Absolutely! A little, or even a longer stretch of time away away will have you feeling reset. Once that brain settles back down and stops vibrating those G4s are going to be whispering sweet nothings at you to strap them back on! Rest up and feel better, don't rush the process.
