Hopeless. My old 94 ranger with a fuel injected 2.3 litre 4 with factory header hemispheracle head 2 spark plugs per cylinder made plenty of horse power. The truck handled like it was on rails. The bed was low enough and 6' in length. I pulled around my 7' x12' trailer no problem. I had fresh cut locust logs piled 5' high on the trailer and the truck pulled it fine. No I'm not going 70 but I'm not an idiot and don't need or want to go that fast with a load. Had the rear frame not rotted away I would still be driving it. So now I have rebuilt a 1977 f150 4x4 and also a 1985 f150 4x4. I will never buy anything new again. I can build better performance than this new crap with after market performance parts for a tenth the money of this new factory crap. 40000 dollars or less is what I pay for the houses I rebuild and flip not a truck. For twenty grand I can build a truck that will out pull out work any of this new absolute crap. Who needs all those cup holders and fancy sound systems in a work truck. You need to have your engineers and designers go too work with people who really use a truck for its intended purpose not a bunch of yuppies and soccer mom's who cracked up their car's and now want to be the biggest thing on the road. To charge 30- 40 - 50- 60 -70 thousand and more for a pickup truck is sinful. In fact all these new vehicles are way over priced and your deliberately making them so the can not be serviced by the owner. Good luck there are plenty of folks that have had enough. The unions the government need to get out of the transportation business. You fluff a vehicle up with all kinds of crash protection but at the same time put 300 plus hp engines in them. People are driving way to fast for road conditions. You braking systems that beat the racing brake of just a few short years ago. So people Sprint about at speeds that their attention level and driving skill levels aren't even close to being part with. And with all fancy video and sound devices to even further detract divers. Did I say drivers? Most people are just plodding along for the ride pointing the vehicle hammering the gas and brakes like drunken chimpanzees. While they chatter about nonsense on their cell phones. I used to drive a fuel tanker now Im nervous just leaving my driveway. You all want to lose the privilege and freedom to drive your own vehicles where and when you want. Keep buying this expensive junk till no one can afford it. That's the plan then the uber government driver less cars will be your only choice. And they won't be cheap but you won't own them or have free instant access to them. But your tax dollars will be funding them.

I have one and love it. The oil change is soo easy, everyone has been complaining but it isn't bad.. To get to the filter all you do is turn your wheels to the right remove a flap and there the filter is unobstructed by wheel or any lines. then when you remove the filter the oil drains into a funnel that perfectly guides your oil to a container.
@erice88105 жыл бұрын
S.W. Wolf agree completely. I did end up removing the skid plate over the drain pan (4 x bolts) to save the mess. Also only pulled the top 3-4 tabs on the upper flap and folded it aside. Took less than 30 mins.

I dont think the problem is just oil changes. Ford Rangers have a terrible reliability rating. Dog and lemon give them 2 stars and a list as long as your arm of problems. Chassis twisting and cracking to the point they are now checked for cracks on safety inspections. Engine failures. Sensor failures. Transmission failures.

1. It's a small truck, the bed is going to be small. You also have the offroad package, making the truck higher up, so the bed is going to be higher. 2. For 40K the Lariat should have a dampener, yes. 3. The front tie-down can't be lower, or else the wheel-bump will be in the way. I'm pretty sure this is close to the standard tie-down configurations of pretty much all trucks. If you want more, you can literally put them in yourself. 4. No one uses select unless you're driving a sports car, and having paddle shifters on an automatic, non-sport car is idiotic, they'd be in the way 99% of the time, and be a huge annoyance. 5. Nearly all modern vehicles are going to be a pain in the ass to work on yourself, especially the engine bay thanks to federal regulations regarding safety, which make almost all vehicles pretty similar thanks to needing to implement crumple zones and the need to make vehicles sleeker and more aerodynamic for better MPG. The Lariat version is for people who don't really care about the cost. If you want to actually buy a truck on a budget, go for the XL with the 4x4/offroad and towing packages, it has the same capabilities as the Lariat but for 10-15K less. You won't have leather seats that massage you and ultra HD 581.9 surround sound speakers, but oh well. It's a truck.

"The front tie-down can't be lower, or else the wheel-bump will be in the way. I'm pretty sure this is close to the standard tie-down configurations of pretty much all trucks. If you want more, you can literally put them in yourself." That's why I wish more manufacturers would just put multiple tie downs in each corner. I see that the new GM half-tons have 3 in each corner. All trucks should have at least that many in their bed. But you point is a good one. The front tie downs wouldn't work if they were lower. This truck is overpriced no matter what. For $40k you can get a decent F-150 XLT, a Tacoma TRD Pro, or a Colorado ZR2. The features you get in the Ranger Lariat just don't justify that price tag. It's a small truck with an ok interior. For $10-15k more than the XL, I just don't see where that money went. I agree on all your other points.

Lighty honestly I think your way off on number 4. I agree it is dum to have them on a non sports orientated vehicle. But imo when they were developed (racing teams) they were designed for ease of use. To make shifting easier and more efficient.. taking your hands of the wheel etc. I have towed from time to time with my ecodiesel Grand Cherokee and now my hemi GC and I can tell ya when I’m coming down a pass and need to kick it down a gear to help maintain speed. It’s just a finger flick and both hands are firmly on the wheel vs reaching down for a shifter and trying to figure out its orientation. I just say don’t give them a bad rep until you try them.

I jacked up the roof so I can sit in it and sort of rounded it off so it looked sort of like a pickup truck cab, bent the rear suicide doors into enough shape so they worked, siliconed the holes in the roof, changed the bent lead spring, and she was road worthy once more. I test drove one and I really like it. The problem is $40k for a truck is a lot to ask. I know Toyota is getting the same for a Tacoma, it's just that people's incomes all have not kept up with vehicle prices. The other thing is fuel economy. My 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD get better fuel economy on diesel than that and when towing my pop up camper which is close to his test load my highway fuel economy stays in the low 20s not 13mpg. On top of that it only has a 5 speed automatic. So while I like the truck I'm going to keep my Jeep and bank my coin until I have to buy a new vehicle. It's a nice truck but just not worth trading an old paid of vehicle that runs good for something new and pretty that costs so much to buy and uses more fuel.

With all due respect. First, I want to say nice looking truck. However, it's a truck not a Prius, I am absolutely shocked that people complain about the box being height when it's a truck, I just don't get the complaint. Secondly, it should not have paddle shifters. Those are for rice, burning foreign cars, not American vehicles. The shifting buttons are perfectly placed on the side of the shifter. Paddle shifters are fake unrealistic for "young kids" The Shifting button placement reminds me of driving a manual with them being on the side of the shifter. I personally think the tiedowns are perfectly placed, and a way to remedy that situation all together is put a really nice hard tunnel cover like a retracts pro. To change the oil, simply turn the wheels all the way to the passenger side. There is no reason to take the wheel off oil changes on these are extremely easy. Simply get an oil filter socket and a long extension piece of cake.

I own a 1995 Ford Ranger, standard cab, XLT, with the 2.3L, 4 cylinder engine, 5 speed manual tranny, and 2 WD. It has over 160,000 miles on it. I maintain it well, have replaced things as they needed it, and changed the oil and filter every 3,000 miles. It is a very reliable truck. I still get about 35 MPG on the highway, and about 27 MPG city and going up and down the mountains where I live which have a lot of switchbacks. I think, compared to mine, the fuel economy on the new Ranger sucks, from what you have reported. I also don't like the fact that the new truck is not available with a manual transmission. Here in the mountains I use my engine to assist with braking on the downgrades, and a manual transmission is needed for this. I have seen the new Ranger in person. It is much bigger than the old truck, about as big as the old F150 used to be. It is no longer a small truck. It is a mid sized truck. Perhaps this is why it is now so expensive. It also has a lot of bells and whistles that should be options, not standard. Many of us who bought the Ranger in the past bought it as an economical working truck. We don't need all the fancy gee-gaws. Because of all this, I would NEVER buy the new Ranger. Sorry, Ford, you blew it with this one. I love my old Ranger, and hoped the new one would follow on in the footsteps of the old ones, but it has gone down the yuupie-duppie path, and abandoned the principles that once made it great.

The contrast between US build and UK build [made in South Africa] Ranger is very interesting. I’m getting a new model in about four weeks. All apart from Raptor here have leaf rear springs and can carry 2400lbs in the bed and two 7700lbs. The engine choice currently [June 2023] is limited to two diesels, a 2.0 twin tube with 204hp and 500Nm torque and a 3.0 V6 that was recently fitted to your F150, Range Rover and Discovery. Yes, the oil filter change is difficult even on my 2014 2.2 diesel Ranger T6. The current model is the T6.2 by the way and in your test it is the T6.1

I'm 62. I've been a Ford man through and through since forever. '66 Mustang fastback, '69 Mach 1, pickups from the '40's through the early '70's. Bought a brand new '77 fully loaded 3/4 ton 4x4 pickup for $6000. Bought a new Ranger 4x4 in 1986 for $11,000. A two wheeler in 2008 for $8,000. My point is is that I don't know who can afford a $35,000+ Ranger these days. There are something like 6 million new cars in America that have not been sold. I'd offer 'em 15 grand for one and then just walk out when they laughed at me.

For me there are 3 major design flaws on the new ranger; 1} No dividable rear seats. So with one Isofix child seat. The additional (hidden) space below and behind is practically unusable. With a 40/60% split this would be better. 2) The antenna on the rear of the cabin makes it hard to mount a larger then 5 foot roof top tent. I would prefer an internal one or front mounted. So if buy one, I will probably mount a front roof spoiler with some lights and mount a flat antenna underneath. 3) Sadly the European/Asian version has no storage on top of the dash.

I just bought the ranger XLT crew. I thought the tie downs were kinda odd as well, and I dont even have middle ones, they are missing. Im going to inquire about them when I am next at the dealer, which will probably be for when the plates come in. I put about 1000lbs behind it today, and didnt even notice I was towing. Thats a big improvement over my 98 ranger. That truck has served me well, towing scrap 2000-2800 pounds at a time, towing minivans, even a ram, with it's 5spd manual 2.5 4 cyl, but you know you have a load behind you even if you just have a riding mower on a trailer. I was hoping to see that truck to 300k miles, it has 220 now. But a leaky windshield, tailgate that needs to be strapped on and turning my headlights on with pliers, plus covid deals of 0% for 84 months made it stupid to bother keeping it any longer. I paid 9 grand for it 20 years ago, it has given me very little trouble, I hope this new ranger is just as tough.

i had a demo for the weekend. it was a 2019 lariat fx4 with 5500kms. the truck had the acceleration and driveline vibration. i did about 50km towing my can am x3 (with trailer its around 3000lbs) and the vibration was significantly worse. the 2.3 is drastically underpowered especially when towing anything. does it do the job? yes but its working. the seats are uncomfortable and the full leather with no bolsters i was sliding around. the lariat gauges are gimmicky and basically useless. the 10 speaker b&o premium sound system is like a cheap ghetto blaster. i like the rangers and will be picking up my new 2022 lariat 500a tremor in hot pepper red in a couple weeks when it arrives. i will be upgrading the trans mount as i believe that most of the driveline vibrations are caused by the soft mount. followed by the ford performance tune to hopefully give it a little more power and sort out the horrendous lazy shifts . i own a performance shop and specialize in building the focus rs so im very familiar with these engines and how to get big power out of them but im just looking to make it a bit more capable. obviously i know this isnt an f150 so there are some things a ranger just wont do but for the price of around 50k canadian plus taxes i expect more. but really theres not many options in this category. my main focus is on paractical driveability and fuel economy.

Been researching this truck for 8 months and it is perfect for what I need. I just sold my 07 F150 and loved it but it was just too big. It is a life style truck that checks all the boxes for a family. Well done Ford. You have a well rounded truck that will fit the lifestyle of many families. Most folks need something they can drive to work on the road and use for light off-roading or snow driving. For all those folks that say it’s overpriced, I would ask you to compare the price of a similarly equipped 2019 mid sized truck. Trucks writ large have dramatically increased in price over the last 20 years. For the folks that negatively comment on the engine. I would offer the historic feedback on the eco boost engines over the last five years, which has been overall good. Please compare and contrast all facets of the truck and you will find it’s is competitively priced. That said. I am always looking forward to any discounts!
@HiPlains15 жыл бұрын
The MSRP is indeed too much. A loaded XLT will run 40K. For that no leather, no mud flaps, no bed liner, and the shitty sony Head unit. A tacoma offroad or limited with leather, sunroof, bedliner, and upgraded JBL system will cost the same. The XLT will feel and look very plain in comparison. I know. Just test drove everything recently. Ford bundles are a hot mess and they nickel and dime for everything. I ended up getting a loaded Nissan Pro 4X. 35K out the door. For that it comes standard with spray bed liner with utility track, Nice looking roof rack, 31 inch all terrain tires, dana 44 locker with skid plates, 4X4 hi/low with descend control, VQ40 4.0 liter with a ton of torque. Real MPG's on that is pretty close to the eco which sucks too much when under boost. I get 18 city and 21 HWY. Better then what the sticker says. Nobody is getting what Ford claims. Tell me with a straight face your getting 22 city and 24 Hwy. I doubt it. Inside the Frontier has leather, 8 way power seats (including recline Sorry ford) and a back seat that folds flat (sorry ford again), nav, bt, sat and a 10 speaker rockford fosgate with sub and a sunroof. The Nissan is considered the most reliable now. Bullet proof truck. Test drove all of them and the Ranger is just not worth it. To get the stuff I have on the Pro 4X I would have to buy a lariat. And that would have been 10K more. Don't tell me this is competitive price wise. Not even remotely so. For what they want for a lariat you can buy a ZR2 diesel with front and back lockers. And it will still cost 3K less. The Zr2 is more in line in offroad performance with the Ford Raptor. Ford's capacity is really bad now with only 9K trucks in the first quarter. With such limited capacity its not hard to get full MSRP. Once they fill the pipe these will be a really hard sell. You better believe it. Maybe if they had offered the 3.2 diesel like they do overseas I would have bought it. I owned a 2014 XLT in the Fiji Islands with the 5 cylinder 3.2 Was really looking forward to that. I might have paid up to 42K for that in XLT trim. But knowing Ford, they probably want 50K for it if they made it. They have 3 great diesels overseas and all they offer is a 2.3 that sucks more gas then the 2.7 does in the full size. Still trying to get my head around that one. Now the justice department has a criminal prope as to why the reported MPG's are not what people are getting. As you may remember, earlier in the year Ford had some employees report to their internal whistle blower alert system. Now its a hot mess at Ford. Also do hand calculations for mileage. Many reports on the Ranger say it not accurate and says your getting more then you really are.

The Tacoma is just as bad or maybe even worse. My Chevy Colorado oil filter is up in the engine bay and easy to get to. Even with skids on... which is awesome!

Still love my Ranger, but… Ford has a major issue with the 2.3 EB’s allowing fuel into the sump. I had 7.8 quarts in the 6.2 quart sump. I had done an oil change with 6 quarts and it was right at the crosshairs line. Well… they thought it was the HPFP. Replaced that.. and it’s still happening. Now they are doing more tests and here’s to Ford actually fixing it. I’m not alone in this.. plenty of people on the Ranger forum saying the EXACT SAME THING

I bought one last week and I love it. It is just my size, and I still have my F150 if I need to haul or tow something really big. I will say, I also notice the off shake or vibration, especially at speed or trying to accelerate hard. Not sure what that is. I would take it in, but the dealer we have does not have the brightest bulbs for mechanics, I barely trust them to change the oil. I am not a fan of the tires, for $40k, could we not have gotten some Good Year? Seriously, Hankook is a cheap Chinese tire, I would rather have something made in the USA. The Good Years on my 16 Edge have been great and with over 105k highway miles on them, they still have a decent amount of thread on them. The Good Years that came on my 13 F150 also lasted nearly 90K. I am going to cry if I don't get at least 75k out of the Hankooks. I am concerned about the 20k mile Oil Change, that seems super long. Guess we will see.

First time viewer and enjoyed your review. Wasn’t bothered by any negative points except the location of the oil filter. I am a do it yourself person so appreciate that you mentioned this. If you do confirm that the wheel has to come off to change the filter, could you give me a shout? Thanks Ken.

I dont know how I missed this one... I hate the Tacoma's seating-even with the improvement. I bet the Ranger would fit most people's truck requirements. The 2.3 is no slouch. :)

Crazy you missed it. This is one of my most popular videos.

There was no improvement to Tacoma seating. The actual cab size is the exact same as it was in 2005. They added a button the raise the seat which actually makes it worse. Why would you want to go up when peoples heads are already cramped. They need to redesign and make the cab larger to fit peoples heads.

I'm completely sold, on the Tacoma. Do revisit all this in 5 or 6 years. Resale will be different. Repair costs will be wildly different. This is an expensive vehicle, short and long term.

I looked a Tacoma, I don't fit. The cab is to small. Toyota dropped the ball on the Tacoma. I would have to buy the Tundra to fit, and with that 55K price, that is NOT going to happen. Ford has a good truck product, if you change your oil at every max 5K miles. The sludge and varnish even with synthetic is bad. Just look at other videos on the subject. People make the mistake and not do that. I change my oil and filter every 3K , or six months. I have a 2018 Challenger v-6 with 7800 miles and I am taking it in to get the fourth oil change. Oil is cheap. I love my Challenger, but my two dogs are ruff on the interior even with seat covers. So I'm thinking of buying a small 4x4 pickup or Jeep. I don't need the Lariat edition.

I owned a 2010 Tacoma TRD off road and hated that thing. Most uncomfortable vehicle of all time. Also the AC broke constantly. I am not driving something that horrible for 6 years ever again.

If you are like me who likes simple things in life get a Nissan Frontier. I’m so tired of expensive trucks with so much high tech and harder to maintain it yourself. That oil filter location will be a deal breaker for a lot of folks.

To get to the oil filter, pull the wheel off and the plastic splash guard in the wheel well.

My '02 2.2l 4cyl s10 has the oil filter in the passenger side wheel well. There is a rubber flap that you lift up in the cover. You don't need to remove the wheel with stock thank god. It's not terrible, but it is irritating. Also the Ranger's bed has optional tiedown locations. That is those black rounded rectangles in the middle of the bed rail. Just need to buy some and install. I get you though it is stupid that it's not already included for the price.

@@k9leadstheway531 It is. That's 3K a month. But on a new production line there is surely a ton of problems and with getting suppliers up to par. This is one of the reasons Ford is not giving much off/rebates. I've seen dealers add 5K addenum stickers to MSRP. Doubt they got it though. Any one pays that much for this is a moron. IMO, the truck is not worth MSRP. Not even remotely so. Basically a loaded Lariat cost 10K more then a loaded Nissan PRO 4X and at least 5K more then a loaded tacoma offroad. One thing is for sure. Once capacities keep up with demand and the dealer lots fill, these will be a really hard sell at MSRP.

I went from a 2011 Ranger V6 to a 2019 Ranger XLT Sport (crew cab). I really like it. It's way faster than the 2011 with better gas mileage. It does cost more but it offers more. I got use to the bed height. The bed hooks are not a problem either. Mine is a 2WD, so no issue with the shifter. I also have the service package, so I am not concerned about the oil filter location.

Any update with Fords corrective action on the 2.3L blocks open deck design and possible coolant leaking into the cylinders? I understand they updated with a new head gasket pn but I think that’s just a band-aid fix. Their Focus RS has had lots of issues with that.
