Despite the awful ending, the actresses in "World to Come" were so good I shipped them into my own little alt universe and now have nothing but great memories!

Another very good selection, thanks for taking the time to put it together 😘 On this list, I've seen "Professor Marsten and the Wonder Women," "Tell It to the Bees" and "The World to Come." I agree that the first is the most unexpected, and probably the most daring in depicting a polyamorous relationship. I loves the chemistry between Vanessa Kirby and Catherine Waterston, their scenes are very powerful and that makes the ending so much more a shame!

I'm surprised more people don't talk about My Summer of Love. It is very early Emily Blunt, but you can definitely see that she has a spectacular career ahead of her. I've only heard her talk about it a few times and even then it was about the nudity. I've held out the hope that she'd take another lesbian role, but I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for it to happen. Professor Marsten and the Women Women is an excellent movie. The relationship between Olive and Elizabeth is one of my favorites between two women on film. The chemistry between Rebecca Hall and Bella Heathcote is off the charts. Thanks for focusing on it and Tell It to the Bees, another really solid WLW film.

What was that film.... Edge of tomorrow? That may not have been explicitly queer but those muscles sure were.
@ninjasinpjsfdcfdw267111 ай бұрын
emily blunt is in a movie called sunshine cleaning and she's in a relationship with a woman in it. however, i dont think there's any explicit love scenes between the two though if i remember right - just hand holding etc. not even any kissing but theyre gay for each other thats for sure.

I’ve seen all the films on this list; yet again you’ve done a great synopsis of each. “Jessica Stein” is a charming, little gem. With writing, acting, and casting so good it almost makes you forget the ending. The performances in “The World to Come” are compelling. Haven’t been able to bring myself to watch it again because of the tragic ending. It’s a shame because the romance and chemistry between Katherine Waterston and Vanessa Kirby is palpable; it could have been such a better film sans the hateful misogyny.

Thank you for the list. It has a couple of films I had not heard of. Another really good "under the radar" movie is Heartland. Written and produced by a lesbian.

I was interested in Kissing Jessica Stein but then I read the comments in here and decided that is best not to hahaha. A few years back I tried to watch My Summer of Love idk, I felt it cringy. The World to Come and Tell It to the Bees were pretty good and well done (endings aside) Thank you for the recommendations!

I find Tell it to the Bees (which removed the happy ending of the book, while putting in a far more unrealistic for the times het happy ending) far more offensive than Kissing Jessica Stein. and The World to Come (PoS man involved with the production and BYG) far more problematic than Kissing Jessica Stein, too. At least Kissing Jessica Stein being a product of its times, and meaningful to ladies of that time. Just approach it as bisexual film, not a lesbian one and it's whatever when looking at it from that perspective. The lady lover dodged a bullet, so as much as I didn't like the ending first viewing, at this point I prefer it. Although, like Tell it to the Bees, just end the film, before the film's ending, or skip and end on sexy women in bed. The other two films were released in years where they've no excuse for lesbian misery movie making. Production values are cold comfort. Tell it to the Bees, film maker, is ignorant, a liar or both. If they gave a shit about historical accuracy, they'd have understood how easy it would be for those women not to be known after moving and stay closeted. Not a damn thing historically inaccurate. Anne Lister and the ladies of Wendellon(sp?) predate the 1950s by plenty with genuine historic examples of non platonic women cohabiting. For obvious reasons, of course, there aren't tons of known or famous enough examples, other couples secret went with them to the grave. There's no reason to doubt their existence in the time. They completely ignored that people would have completely ignored the doctor and her housekeeper vs an interracial couple, yet they put that in the movie that allegedly cares about historical accuracy - BS. Invisible gal pals was definitely not less realistic for the 50s, than that. Now I'm not British, but according to aunts, many students, in the 50s were complaining about the partner of the lesbian gym teacher and the school didn't for fire her, or ban her partner from campus. They were very only men can do that, no harm, shut up, to the poor girls. If the worst kind of lesbian predator can be completely ignored and dismissed in the 50s, due to misogynistic view of s*x and assault, then two discreet women with a completely plausible reason to live together would be ignored. Rewriting the rare happy ending, because hets think homo pain is higher art, its lesbophobic, af. Side note, while I hate to think that predator existed, since the last thing I want is more fuel to haters; I don't have any reason to think my relatives were lying about it. To my relatives credit, they did not use that particular lowlife to stereotype lesbians. Tradgedy doesn't immediately mean better writing, but all those critical obsessed wannabes think so. At least between the Affleck reason not to watch The World to Come, that film did not hide that there were husbands and it being about miserable life. I forget where I didn't bother to finish watching it. I was happy to have read the book first and spoiled myself to stop watching one at the train departure scene for TittB

The world to home is an excellent film. Friendship, bonding and great chemistry. The actresses were also wonderful in their respective roles. However, I dont think there could have been a happy ending for them given the time period and the status of women back then. Despite the ending its one of my favourite

Hi, Kissing Jessica Stein still makes me angry, there was a few films from that era that had a similar vibe like A Woman’s a Helluva Thing and Gray Matters, that put Lesbians in some ‘try to fix or change or disprove or score on’ narrative, some worse than others but very male gaze and hetero, it was all that came out for quite a while, there was another one where Barry Watson is the love interest of a waitress who catches the eye of the “Town Lesbian”, you know, because there is only one or two 🤔, similar vibe, I almost watched Stillwater the other day but didn’t, I wondered how it was in my algorithm but now I know so thanks, I’ll check it out, I think that’s why But I’m a Cheerleader was so impactful to me because it parodies the whole “fixable” narrative and puts it on its ear, Truth About Jane came out in this era as well and was more instructional and also dealing with Conversion Therapy type of parents. Until the L Word this was all there was though, do you remember a movie called Late Bloomers from 96-97’ ? Two female teachers fall in love and get fired and ostracized but “spoiler” they win out, and once was enough for the beauty and heartbreak of World to Come but wonderful chemistry, sorry for the rant, been a while, always enjoy the lists, ✌️!

Regarding TWTC, the setting is in the late 1800’s, so why wouldn’t it have a patriarchal overtone - I mean really? And isn’t that the point of the movie - they found each other through all that. They were married women. I’m sure most men would have problem if their wife were sleeping with another woman. And back then, even more so. This is a period movie - you can’t judge the values and attitudes of the past by today’s standards. In another 150 years, i’m sure the society of the future will say we were pretty f***** up, too.
@ethelzenahall348711 ай бұрын
Exactly. The film was very realistic and wasn't trying to fulfill a lesbian trope to piss off the community. I hated the ending as well but only because I selfishly wanted them to be together. It was a good movie despite the tragedy.

Also known as you haven't watched them, because you've been ignoring unhappy movies list, lol. Professor Marsten and the wonder woman, best movie on this list. Have that many Sapphic viewers really missed it? Sad, if so. I totally understand some don't have time for a man and polyamory. It's not even an unhappy movie. If you like Wonder Woman, the director, the actresses, you definitely gotta check it. :) I guess I haven't heard, seen Stillwater. Although, My Summer of Love definitely made me a sucker for Emily Blunt, lol. Although, I would have been, anyways. I think I had that on a handheld gaming system (PSP?) and watched multiple times on public transit, lol. Even though I'm not a big fan of UH(UnHappy) les film. Really though, if you've seen one coming of age, summer lesbian flick - one of the most over represented type of lesbian films. Although, I watched Kissing Jessica Stein more than once. I would rather rewatch worse films with happier endings and even better if without men, but I kind watch again. I am glad to have more of those to choose from, now. As long as you go I thinking it's a bisexual story and not a rom com, you'll be fine. It is still worth watching. Lesbian rom com expectations are where you get hurt. Just read Tell it to the Bees. The film maker has no idea about historical accuracy and is a c***. I did watch Tell it to the Bees. I followed the advice to stop after watching the train station. Probably won't rewatch, I think I could have watched this legitimately and purposefully didn't, because F them not respecting the source material and lesbians. I knew The World to Come was a bad idea for me to watch, even though I didn't know about BYG. I forget why or where I stopped watching it, so I didn't even make it to that part. Probably some scene with one of the husbands. I didn't make it thru the film. Maybe I could make it thru a lesbian edit. Although, if I could go back, I'd rather have seen this whole movie, than Anaïs or any of Bean Pole, before I quit that before imminent het sex. I'd probably also rather watch this homo misery movie with staff that I don't want to support over Chasing Amy or Bar Girls, too.
