Are you counting like "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 and 1 and 2 [etc.]?" I was taught 5/4 "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 [no and here] 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5,1 and 2 and 3...." Am I miscounting?

Yes, I'm counting like the first way you mentioned. If you don't, then you're actually only counting in 9/8! Think of it as a regular measure of 4/4, but with one extra full beat added to it.

there are still 5 8th notes, so if you'd count for every quarter note the and (making it 8th), you'll count for the fifth quarter the and too. Otherwise is just 9/8. Dunno if it make sense

@@JoshMerhar thanks for the lesson. Have you ever played a 5/4 with downbeat on the 1 and accent on the AND of 3 ? This way there is equal space between them
