AAAAHHH! Why can't I do this??? I hate videos like this (though they're well meant of course). "Just do this!" (Effortlessly slides). My foot either "sticks to the pedal" or slides around spastically, never winding up in the same place twice. I'm not a beginner but my foot will just not grasp this.

Wow, this was a great lesson. It's actually a powerful technique if you really play with a lot. Combines well with Schillinger's rhythmic ideas. And it's great to know you can play in odd meter and still give people a sense of a groove that they could dance to.

I believe 4 me the correct & natural way is the Traditional Grip because the left hand is in the more natural position, especially when it comes 2 executing the Da Da Ma Ma Roll as it was originally called way b4 it became the Double Stroke Roll. In the left hand, the first 3 fingers especially the middle finger is how the magic happens & with placing an accent on the second beat of the Da Da MAa Ma Roll. And when it's there you'll know it because both of your hands will look like Butterflies wings in full flight smooth & in the POCKET!!! Bada Bing - Bada Boom!!!🥁

Brother my left hand got tendon problems on my finger, it's moving whenever i try to scoop my pinky+ring finger if i use it too long it must be lock in between my pinky and ring finger so i can bend it just a little bit then can i use my middle+ring instead of pinky ?

I've only been playing for a few months (and learn by myself), but I think I've been doing this technique without even realizing it. It just felt natural when doing fast kick patterns

I keep seeing the rebound on these videos, and with drummers in person I work with, bounce the stick all the way up vertical. I try it on my kit and it's just... not there. Even when I just balance the stick on my index finger and don't even hold it, just let it sit there. Is something wrong with my kit, or my sticks, that there's just no bounce/rebound? I've noticed when I play around on other kits that this isn't the case, too - I get a ton of rebound and can play with 2 or three 3 strokes kind of effortlessly. But dropping the stick on any of my drums or cymbals at home... it just lands flat and doesn't move. Like it's falling into a pillow.

A very nice observation about doubles,but...some things..the pinky is the strongest muscle in the hand...Try to lift individually a bag with each finger separately and you will understand.. the first example with just holding the stick with the the ladt fingers is the backhand grip or ancient grip.. the mechanics work very well for a power grip when using the wrists especially when holding the stick at the very end, front end heavy...the first observation works if you put the middle finger and index as push pull for doubles and interlaced singles...nice video

Do you have a playlist of the drummers you mentioned? If you make one, I’ll separate the drums so we can dissect them and label these terms. If I get time, I’ll write out some notation and put it on my GitHub and link back to this video.
