I keep seeing the rebound on these videos, and with drummers in person I work with, bounce the stick all the way up vertical. I try it on my kit and it's just... not there. Even when I just balance the stick on my index finger and don't even hold it, just let it sit there. Is something wrong with my kit, or my sticks, that there's just no bounce/rebound? I've noticed when I play around on other kits that this isn't the case, too - I get a ton of rebound and can play with 2 or three 3 strokes kind of effortlessly. But dropping the stick on any of my drums or cymbals at home... it just lands flat and doesn't move. Like it's falling into a pillow.

A very nice observation about doubles,but...some things..the pinky is the strongest muscle in the hand...Try to lift individually a bag with each finger separately and you will understand.. the first example with just holding the stick with the the ladt fingers is the backhand grip or ancient grip.. the mechanics work very well for a power grip when using the wrists especially when holding the stick at the very end,front end heavy...the first observation works if you put the middle finger and index as push pull for doubles and interlaced singles...nice video

Excellent ,so clearly explained and and demonstrated . As so many others have already said ,this is by far one of the best videos that clearly shows the technique and mechanics of playing clean even double strokes . Thankyou so much Josh ,fantastic job and I admire your playing .😂😂

Do you have a playlist of the drummers you mentioned? If you make one, I’ll separate the drums so we can dissect them and label these terms. If I get time, I’ll write out some notation and put it on my GitHub and link back to this video.

Do you have any tips on how to improve ankle flexibility when playing the kick drum? I currently have an electronic drum kit and finding it difficult to play the kick repeatedly. Also love the videos man, keep it up!

for me, this shit comes easier with the music i'm writing to. the music brings out what NEEDS to be played. i never got good at this kind of thing until the necessity came about. That, then, broke me out of old habits and helped me move on to expanding ideas. this was important to me, as was learning linear grooves/fills, and linear limb independence soon followed. My weakest point, is...not pushing through the groove with my rhythm hand. I occasionally rest when i smack the snare. which is lazy af.

I don't know where it originated from, but listen to the end of Helter Skelter by The Beatles. (when the song fades out the second time) I hear that a lot in Drum'n'Bass.

Are ya sure the notation is correct? I heard & saw lotsa LL on the snare.
@johngarvey8033 ай бұрын
You are right, but from what I’m seeing the LLs are in the actual groove right before the fill/phrase he’s showing
@Crazy-Roland-vDrums3 ай бұрын
@@johngarvey803 the notation embedded in the video is all wrong & out of synch in the pattern... if he's playing double LL on the snare, WHICH HE IS, then it should be notated, or the notation should be taken out entirely.
@johngarvey8033 ай бұрын
I’m not saying you are wrong; I just didn’t see LLs within the actual phrase the video is meant to showcase (notated at 2:39). Where does he do this?
@Crazy-Roland-vDrums3 ай бұрын
@@johngarvey803 not sure what you're referring to, i'm referring to STARTING @ 0:51 the pattern includes double LLs on the snare, which is what i posted right at the very top.
@johngarvey8033 ай бұрын
There are no doubles on the snare, it’s a snare followed by a flam using both the snare and hats. It sounds like a double but technically the notation at 0:51 is correct
