Hi, I believe that the most important time to have food available for deer is in January, February and March with rye or wheat plantings from the year before still being available not in April, May and June during spring green-up. Enjoyed your video.

I couldn’t agree more. There is so much food due to spring green up that I’m not focused on feeding them more during that time. They need more nutrition through the winter months when food is dwindling away.

We see your point. I think why Kip emphasized that time frame is because that is when deer need the most nutrients. Does are lactating and dropping fawns, and bucks are growing antler.

I'd go a step further and say that late winter is the most critical time to supply extra food to the deer herd in the northern states, such as where Kip lives. However, here in the south, our deer herd is stressed much more in late summer than in winter or during spring green-up, so that's where we really focus our efforts.

This is a very common misconception and a huge problem with many deer videos. Deer needs and habitat varies greatly by region. A northern deer experiences a very different set of challenges than a southern deer does and vice versa. There is no one solution fits all and there never will be.

Brush hog comment….it is amazing how fast the overgrowth of trees, Forbes and other grasses can take over. if you don’t keep at it annually….you may not get a chance a year later??

Yes they come back with a vengeance! Prescribed fire is the best way to maintain areas that you want to keep in a early successional state.

Most important detail I would have included is that it all depends on your climate, region, and most of all, your surrounding local landscape ecology.

Correct. These are just general things landowners tend to do that aren't benefiting them or wildlife.

Do you have information about wet areas and pine trees?

What kind of information are you looking for?

@@Whitetail_Properties I would like to learn how deer use wet areas and how to connect wet areas to food plots and how to create bedding areas in wet areas if possible. I live in an area with lots of pines, so I would like to learn about how to create bedding in pine areas. Thank you for the reply.
