Finding a good pillow is the key to getting good sleep for me.

I finally got to the point in life where I could save up a little and afford a good quality sleepingbag and pad. The Thermarest Questar 0° is excellent for comfort and packability. It has simple straps that keep me right on top of the pad. I went ahead and got a Neoair Xtherm NXT as you had recommended in the past and it is by far the best pad I've ever owned. Got both of these on sale before the cold weather season began and when I finally got to use them recently, it was the most comfortable I've ever slept at camp. Far cry from sewing my own blankets haphazardly and needing to wrap in a poncho burrito to get through the winter nights!

Here in Germany I use the Comfort Deluxe Self-Inflating Isomatte from Sea to summit. I don´t give a thing, if it is not light weight, I need a good rest and sleep. Thx 4 the vid. As always very useful!

I have the UST 30” mattress and the Nemo Jazz sleep system you show here. LOVE it! So comfy. Never roll off the mattress. I use a Bluetti EB3A to power a fan for the summer camping. I have the Nemo Aurora 2person and really like it. Enough for me and 2 small pups and 1 medium dog

No questions asked I bring my pillow from home on any trip over a single night. I’ll deal with the (minor) weight and bulk, I sleep like a baby out there 😂 just roll it super tight and find a way to smoosh it on top or strap it outside and bring an extra pillow case.

Hammocks were my answer. I would backpack and canoe trip less if I didn't discover the comfort of a proper hammock and underquilt. No pad can compare

The wind is the biggest thing that interrupts my sleeping when backpacking. Even with earplugs and a well-placed tent the howling and tent flapping stresses me more than anything else. I'd love a more extensive review of the Manta mask in the backcountry!

I know you are a fan of Trekology pillows. I have the Aluft 2.0 but just tried out the Aluft Deluxe. It was fantastic! 4 inches of height, removable cover, pad strap, and at least on my scale was the same weight as the 2.0 (official site says 10g heavier than 2.0).

Most campers will like it. If they're not training for SHTF, why be less comfortable than you have to be? It lets a lot of older or injured people camp with they may not be able otherwise if they can alleviate some issues. I think the biggest factor though is that a lot more comfort lets a lot of men convince their women/families to go camping.

Man, I love the idea of a blackout tent, but without the open panels for ventilation throughout the night, I feel like it'd get excessively hot in there. I supposed the tent could be buttoned up come 6am-ish to block the sunrise.

I can't comprehend this. I wake up naturally by 6am every day no matter what time I go to sleep. I haven't used an alarm in 10 years. I thought most people have an internal clock and adults don't generally just sleep until 10am. 🤷‍♂

Come on, joining too mattresses together does not let you cuddle with someone who'll sink between the 2. This is even a very common complaint about $3,000 beds where the king is 2 individual mattresses for that adjustable stuff. Is that Nemo sleep system new? It looks like they just ripped off Zenbivy. I like Nemo, but a car camping tent from them? At that point you're paying extra just for their name.

Other tips: Take your hat off when going to sleep. Don't toss and turn every couple seconds. Just settle into a position and give yourself a chance to fall asleep. Don't sleep in the dirty, sweaty clothing you were hiking in. Especially purple plants.

From what I understand you’re have a background in science from formerly being a consultant. Why is this relevant? In my opinion I feel like you lean with a specific bias towards specific brands (Nemo, Zpacks, thermarest, etc) due to a level of sponsorship and prodeals. I would kindly suggest that you start breaking out of your framework with those brands. You seem to value versatile gear and I would suggest you look into the brands (some of which you’ve slightly covered due to possible prolink deals): Rab, big Agnes, Fjallraven, Kuiu, Stoneglacier, Helly Hansen, Western Mountaineering, Suluk 46, Patagonia. I know it’s not cheap to test all those brands, but I think the increase in diversity would strengthen your message rather just reinforcing a select few brands.
@JustinOutdoors
@JustinOutdoors Ай бұрын
I have never received sponsorship money from brands who make gear in categories I review. I receive 99% of the gear I use as review samples from the brands. Some brands do not send review samples (e.g., Western Mountaineering and Hilleberg). The brands that do not send review samples are usually brands who make gear that I would not be able to afford to buy. I use and test what gear interests me and a lot of the time there are a handful of brands who are doing better than others pushing innovation and making cool products. As an FYI, here are some of the brands whose gear I have tested in 2024: Thermarest, Gossamer gear, Duston Gear, Nemo, Black Diamond, Zenbivy, Big Agnes, Zpacks, Paka, Samaya, Mystery Ranch, Trekology, Rab, Exped, Snow Peak, Brynje, Feathered Friends, Mountain Hardwear, Outdoor Research, Montbell, Atom Packs, Fire Maple, Marmot, Hikenture, One Tigris, Anker, Rock Front, MSR, Decathlon, Flextail, Nitecore, Adotec, Suluk 46, 3F UL, Garmin, Tarptent, REI, Outdoor Vitals, Gregory, Osprey, Six Moon Designs, Common Gear, and many more.
@zachvydra9309
@zachvydra9309 Ай бұрын
Fair enough, thank you for the explanation on your end. I think you may benefit from something like expert voice or outdoor prolink to take the edge off buying gear that isn’t going to be returned to the manufacturer following a review.
