Same! I could not keep a Calathea alive until I started fishkeeping. My Calatheas aren't thriving yet, but they are solidly alive after months and months! I think it's the combination of regular, on-a-schedule watering (I water change weekly and they get a quick midweek top-up if they dry out), fertilizer from the fish, and the dechlorinator that I use to make the water fish safe!

The one thing that has helped me with calatheas is when I water, rather than watering with a water can or some other method like that, I spray the soil with my larger plant sprayer. It helps with avoiding overwatering because not as much is being dumped out into the plant and then less makes it way to the roots. It just really helps keep that "evenly moist" soil environment without going overboard.

Love your intro. I do agree about these particular plants and I've had all of them at one time and over time they died. Many died because I went too crazy with collecting and overwhelmed myself with the number of plants needing care. It's really unfortunate but also part of my learning process. I now have the greenhouses which really help to better maintain the plants and now I'm using trays and bottom watering, foregoing the lovely pots I used to use, in order to make watering more efficient.

I just started with plants like 4 months ago and I’ve killed a bird’s nest fern, parlor palm, and Hoya. The fern was crisping up on me and it was my first plant so I didn’t know it liked humidity and that my apartment was SO dry so I actually just stopped watering it and let it die so I could move on lol. All the new growth was dying anyway. My parlor palm also wasn’t doing so hot. It got really leggy and occasionally crispy so I gave it to a friend and she repotted and then killed it. Lastly I kind of killed a Hoya Krimson Queen, I underwatered her according to the plant shop. I didn’t think that was possible, but she shriveled up and half of her vines died in a month even though I watered once in that month. My plant shop let me exchange my Hoya (they put my sad one in plant rehab), but I probably wouldn’t try another birds nest fern or parlor palm again.

I’ve also killed a Peperomia pixie lime. It was one of my first plants. I’ve also killed a few calatheas, but someone told me to chop them to the base and put them in a plastic bag or cover in plastic wrap, then put them somewhere light and warm. They’ve started sprouting new leaves! The lack of humidity killed the leaves, but the roots were fine, so I’m starting again with those. The plant I regret killing the most was a haworthia. It had so many babies and I decided to separate it, and so much of it died. I’ve got leaves propagating, but I wish I had left it alone!

I just got a Zebrina. It is so beautiful. I am hoping to not kill it. I got a cisus discolor three weeks ago after seeing yours (it had been on my wish list too) and that is really struggling. It has lost half its leaves and several others are dry. I was using a pebble tray for the cisus discolor but I just set up a humidifier so fingers crossed!

You are my fav KZbinr now! I absolutely love your videos. I think I also have a toxic relationship with my Calathea roseopicta Dottie...but I absolutely love her. I recently killed my marantha leuconera. I managed to get one bigger and she’s thriving, idk why the first one died tho...anyways, love love love prayer plants!

I've been collecting plants since last April and of the 100+ plants I've had since then, I've only killed 4. My calathea elliptica vittata, hypoestes, crocydylus fern and a type of bracken fern. I regret killing them all, but I learnt a lot from each experience.

It’s so much harder to be in Canada especially where we barely get sunshine This is my first winter & I fell in love with Calethea So I didn’t buy grow lights & humidifiers early enough in the winter & all my Calethea got brown edges on all their leaves My hope is that if I’m on top of the light, humidity & winter next season my new batch will be better & that my current ones will grow new healthier leaves

I was like you and a couple months ago p/u grow lights and humidifier. Does make a difference. Stromanthe still a little crispy but have new growth. The medallion has minimal crisping and growing like crazy. Good luck with your calatheas. 🍀

@@susannahwalsh2153 Mine are not putting up healthy growth yet still have the crispy leaves on all new growth I put a grow light bulb in the ceiling as I figured they don’t like direct light How close are your grow lights maybe I should put an actual one closer to get better results?
@susannahwalsh21534 жыл бұрын
I’m going to say grow light is about a foot away and right next to a small humidifier. 👍

I've seen moon valley pilea at the box stores lately. It was in a little costa farms exotic angel pot. I picked it up a few times, but didn't end up getting it. I had a bit more restraint a couple months ago before it got warm. I just want ALL. THE. PLANTS. in the spring.

Are you going to do separate video on each of them? All of the plants you mention are ones I don't see many people talk about are have them.

Surprisingly, my Calathea Zebrina is the one Calathea thats doing pretty okay with me! There's 2 new leaves coming out 😍 definitely one of my fav plants, not just calathea. It's just so regal and majestic. (And ironically.. I'm in UK as well!)

FYI I recently picked up a peperomia pixie lime from my local Home Depot! It's in a 3" pot and cost $2.99 plus tax.

Ive had my alocasia purple sword for about four months and it has gone dormant 😬 fingers crossed it’ll thrive when spring comes I’ve also recently bought a calathea zebrina! The one plant id like to try again is the stag horn fern. I have no idea why it died on me😅

So I decided in December to buy four different Calatheas (yes, I know now I was a fool) an Orbifolia, Ornata, Burl Marx, and Majestica Whitestar. The Ornata and Orbifolia are my problem children. Ornata doesn't believe it ever gets enough humidity and gives me brown edges. The Orbifolia did not like being shipped and half the leaves died from shock. Nearly two months later they've stabilized and we're on speaking terms (they're popping out new growth). Comparatively the Burl Marx is the MVP and is so so mellow, would recommend. The Whitestar adjusted and is popping out new leaves. Calatheas as a whole...are a labor of love but when they're bad "toxic relationship" is very accurate.
