@heatherdegreeff10924 жыл бұрын
I think we're all guilty of that. We're so excited, we just want plants no matter what! I have definitely become more thoughtful about what I buy, do I REALLY want it, do I have a place for it, etc. It's a process!!
@CrazyPlantGuy4 жыл бұрын
Yes, a common mistake that we’ve all made. I think it’s important to really like the plant so you are committed to caring for it, also know what you can handle and manage when caring for a lot of plants.
@lunamaxwell61904 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean it can get out of control fast! Thankfully for me, I have these videos to get an idea what's out there and I decided early on in my plant journey that I loved hanging vining plants (Pothos, Scindapsus and Philodendrons).

It’s weird that overwatering in soil kills the roots, rots them but you can put the dang thing in an entire cup of water to grow new roots.
@elijahmikhail45664 жыл бұрын
K L I think it's cause oxygen can easily diffuse through just water. But if the water is trapped within a matrix of soil, the oxygen can't diffuse through it. It's like how foam which filled with air insulates heat but plain air doesn't.

Also, to add... in soil you have microorganisms that can eat your rotten roots due to suffocation from compacted matter unlike in water where most molecules are soluble.
@alis492814 жыл бұрын
It is always about oxygen. I have grown quite a few plants in my fertilized Paludarium, but if the oxygen become low in the water part it is fatal to everything in the water. Soil is also usually much much more nutritious and it can develop rot or mold.

As for the overwatering or to wet medium, I found that if I put my plants in a terracotta pot, I will not have that kind of problem anymore (or at least not that dramatic). Plastic pots keep the soil very wet as the plastic doesn't allow some kind of evaporation.

Hi there, I am 57 years old, I’ve been a plant mom for 40 plus years. My mom always had a house jungle 😂 whenever I get a buggy situation, I simply remove ALL the soil, wash down the plant with soapy water, sanitize the pot, and repot. That always takes care of the situation. No chemicals needed. I hope this helps. Also to keep from over watering, let the plant tell you when it’s thirsty! Trust me, it will let you know.

Hi Christian! How are you? If I buy a wishlist plant has been over watered, I will take it home, remove from its nursery pot, place on newspaper and put it in front of a fan. The air circulation helps to dry out the soil. The newspaper will absorb the extra water. Hope that helps, Gerry 😎

I think because of quarantine, being at home constantly, I’ve been fcking with my plants way to much. I’ve got a gnat problem from overwatering. My monstera hates me right now, again from overwatering. I had to pull one of my pothos from its decorative pot and place it closer to a sunny window because it just wouldn’t dry out. My plants do best when I neglect them a little.
@chrissi8274 жыл бұрын
I haven't had too many problems but that's because I also recently bought my plants! But I am definitely paying too much attention to them, I give them little drinks every couple days when I shouldn't, and when watering day arrives I can't because I've already been watering! Literally have to let them dry out for like 2 weeks at this point I swear. Super difficult because I have nothing to do! And I've been very impatient with them growing too 😂
@SickBoiRENegade4 жыл бұрын
The struggle is real!😂🤣 my pothos has been outside drying out for 3 days... it's happy tho and my gnats are gone 🍃💗🌿💜
@SickBoiRENegade4 жыл бұрын
I agree. A neglected plant is a healthier plant lol. I bought a moisture meter and was shocked😳 I was watering way too much. The finger in the soil trick is very deceptive 🤨 now I don't water until the meter hits 1 or 0. It is very satisfying to wait till the leaves tell u they are thirsty and then watch them perk up when watering. We're all guilty of literally loving our plants to death sometimes!

K L hi when you overwater take plant out of pot and wrap old cloth or kitchen roll around root ball .keep changing as they become soaked , leave plant out of pot to air the roots
@Weirder_the_better4 жыл бұрын
This is definitely the same exact thing for me. Lately, I feel like I keep buying plants because I want something to take care of every day, haha. Even with the amount of plants that I currently have, I still have days where nothing needs watering, pruning, or attention, which is when I start overwatering or hovering, haha. Some of my healthiest plants are those that I literally forgot about and didn't look at for a week.

Thank you so much. This is a very good chat about some important issues. I have been troubled by mealy bugs this season, and keeping on top of them is so important because they seem to bounce back easily. They like my Phalaenopsis orchids for some reason. I am not overwatering. I'm really strict about doing it once a week on Fridays. I do check in between to make sure all is well, but the watering schedule seems to be working. I've moved some orchids to water culture, which is easier in that regard. I'm still learning about it. I have my African Violets on a wick system, which is sooo good for them. It is amazing for large, long-lasting blooms. Thank you for the recipes and for the advice about repotting. Repotting stresses me a little, I'll admit. I've had my Pothos for a few years and have never repotted it, and it seems to thrive. It's good to see you this weekend. Take care! 💖💖💖 Oh--mistakes. I've killed my Macodes petola, I think. I'm really sad about it. I should have left it in the pot it came in, but I thought I should repot it in a terrarium. That didn't work, so I moved it to sphagnum in a plastic bag, and it hung in there. Then I thought I should put it back in a pot. Now, I think it's dying. Sigh. Just one more thing--I lost my Calathea ornata. It just shriveled over time. I gave up on it, cut all its leaves off and put the pot in a corner for a while, planning to throw it out eventually--lazy or unable to do it--anyway, I saw a little shoot on it, so I unpotted the root system, cleaned it off, and put it in leca balls with water. It sat on a shelf doing nothing, and I noticed finally that the shoot wasn't viable, so I decided to throw it away. When I removed it from the leca, I saw a new shoot coming up through the leca, so immediately returned it to the leca, added water, and now I'm waiting. Wouldn't it be remarkable if the plant came back? Sorry to be so long!!!! I don't have plant friends. 😪
@nancylanderson80124 жыл бұрын
I used to repot as soon as I received an online-ordered plant. I don't do that anymore because I lost leaves that way. I also repotted into planters that were too big and, therefore, overwatered the plant. Now that I'm more informed, my plants are healthier. Keep up these great videos!!

It depends if your plant that you repotted was dry in the oil soil or wet. If it was completely dry I would water like you normally wanter it before letting that water drain through. Super helpful thank you! I killed my fig tree repotting it. I still struggle with knowing what some of my issues are though. My dumb cane and schefflera were doing so well and then weren’t. I wasn’t sure if I was over or under watering, so would modify the watering. Change up the lighting. Didn’t see bugs but suspected maybe pests so washed them down and did many neem oil sprays. They’re still declining. The only thing I haven’t done is actually take it apart and inspect the roots. They’re really large plants and I thought that maybe I would kill them even more if I repotted. Does it make sense to wait until spring to repot or just try it now since there is clearly some sort of issue

You must have been sending wavelengths from Toronto to New Jersey because just this past Wednesday I downsized my dracaena "Janet Craig" from a 10in pot to a 6in pot. When I bought it in a 4in pot I instantly placed it in the bigger pot because I thought it would encourage it to grow tall and treelike. Nope... and it's been looking really sad sitting in that big ole pot for 2 yrs. I don't know why I decided that downsizing might be the answer, but I'm glad it came to me. Tons of dirt, hardly no roots. I repotted and hopefully that will help. I also did the same with my heart-leafed philodendron. Placed it right into an 8in pot from cuttings that a friend gave me last year. I thought that would encourage it to grow strong and bushy. Again, nope... ended up with one long strand that I kept wrapping around the top of the pot to cover its baldness. So I have now chopped it into several pieces that I am rooting in water. Will keep you posted on both...

lol...I’m sure I’ll overwater again sometime in the future 😆 the fan is a great idea, but know what you mean of removing the wet soil to not damage the root system, they can be so delicate.

I grow in leca and had my tetrasperma in that but then the root began rotting away. So I tried to root in water and it was taking forever to get some root action. Eventually I put it in sphagnum moss and the roots really took off from there and I have a really healthy root system now within like 2 weeks

This video was informative! Thanks for sharing. Is it bad that I am repotting new plants I bring into my home? A few plants that I’ve brought home had insects. So now, I repot everything before bringing it in.
@CrazyPlantGuy4 жыл бұрын
It’s not bad if theirs fungus it insects, but be mindful of the size your repot then in. Normally when I bring new plants home. I’ll quarantine them and spray them down fist.

Your not alone. I struggle with philodendron too. My philodendron Brasil’s leaves started yellowing and falling off. Most likely overwatering but I really didn’t water it very often. I don’t know what it is. 🤷♀️

Yeah, I can’t seem to diagnose it? Is it over or under watering? 😅

Hey! As for me I really don't water him very often (probably twice a month) and he is beautiful and thriving,let him be,check for any pests of course,check the soil and mostlty don't hover and try bottom water him so he will absorb the quantity of water he needs, don't worry, he's going to be okay!😉🌱🌿🍃

help! What causes brown spots about dime size and near it is a thin line of brown about an inch long. It started with flap Jack then snake plant and now even caladiums indoors. I’ve seen pictures of brown spots with yellow circle around but these don’t have it. Really like your channel.

Hi! So my fix on overwatering is terra cotta pots. I feel that the ability of the terra cotta to help evaporate the water help the plants so much in the end.......if you have a heavy hand at watering..as I do. Those plastic pots just hold in all the moisture forever it seems.
@CrazyPlantGuy4 жыл бұрын
Oh yes Terracotta pots are definitely great for overwaterers ...But I find that some of my plants dry up way too fast, so I need to stay on top of them more. 😅 trying to find that balance which is almost impossible as so many factors, the soil mixture, light, air flow, plant etc Ah, the joys of plant parenthood 😆

Where do you purchase your green pots?!?!? I've been trying to find good sturdy nursery pots that come in multiple sizes.
@justinlehh3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Would you recommend to repot if the pot is too large for the plant.
@brendawilliam59314 жыл бұрын
Your video, as usual, was very informative! My question is about newly purchased plants. My system is to throw away the old soil, depending on the root ball, size up and repot the plant. While its out of the pot, I clean the plant, roots and pot with soapy water and rinse. You don't mean that I can't repot a new plant, regardless of what time of year it is, right?
@CrazyPlantGuy4 жыл бұрын
You can repot whenever as long as the pant needs to move up. It’s just recommended to do it during the growing season because repotting is very stressful for plants.

When you mentioned wiping down the leaves with worm water it intrigued me because you the second person to mention this. Are you talking about using earthworm water ? Curious to know more
@jonholmes37564 жыл бұрын
Warm , room temperature not cold 👍
@dizzylizzy75824 жыл бұрын
I think Christian said warm too, but you can get foliage sprays made from worm tea. I have a worm farm and it takes a long time to get worm castings you can use or worm tea. The best worm tea is apparently made from the castings, rather than the liquid that leaches out of the worm farm.

Ficus tree goals! I finally got a tineke baby and I am so excited for him to grow tall and strong like yours. The burgundy I bought was planted in a pot with three of them and has grown crazy and in every direction. Would you recommend using a stake to keep my tineke growing straight up? Or do you think it will grow vertical fine without the overcrowding of other plants,

When I over water I let the plant drain as much as possible in the sink. Then I place the plant on a thick; dry towel. The towel extracts a surprising amount of water through the drainage holes. This has saved me quite a few times as I’m getting to know my plants.

I got a plant in the mail that was way to wet. I put the plastic pot on a sheet of paper towel that I folded to the same size as the base of the pot. I used two sheets and switched between the two once the other had dried (trying not to be too wasteful). With gravity and capillary action, I think it helped my soil get to a moist but not soggy stage a lot faster.
@CrazyPlantGuy4 жыл бұрын
Oh for sure tip on using towel or new spare will help soak up those wet soil.
