You mean business! I'm a big Monkees devotee and it really is upsetting how they've been handed the short end of the stick in the textbooks, ignoring most of the facts. Glad to see someone set the record straight. :)

Like the old saying goes, "If you tell a lie often enough...." I've been a fan of the guys for years and still see many of the same "facts" circulated by those who know barely anything about them or their backstory. I appreciate how you do research and use quotes and other verifiable sources to straighten out some of the myths that are so often repeated. It's because of you I learned how much more input Mike had (or perhaps verbally promised) when he was recruited. It would help explain his actions during the group's time together. I've really been enjoying your videos!! Will there be more coming soon??

Thank you! I really did a lot of research. I figured out years ago why Michael signed that contract. But only now is Michael talking about the early days. He confirmed that he thought he'd be very involved with the music, and in fact, he thought they'd hired him for his music. He said he was heartbroken when his music wasn't chosen to be the sound of the Monkees. However, he made it clear there wasn't a promise. He calls his belief a misunderstanding. But I think he's selling himself short. Bert and Bob had no idea how to do what they were trying to do and one possibility was to use Nesmith's music. There is ample evidence that they wanted the four guys to be the makers of the music from the beginning. So, okay, whose music? Well, of course, Nesmith's. He was the songwriter. Two things happened... they ran out of time to become good enough to record and the pilot sold with Boyce and Hart's music. The Beatles-like sound was commercial. Michael's music? Not so much. And yes knowing all this definitely explains Nesmith's behaviour. The next video? I'm working on it. I hope I'll have it up in early September. In the meantime here's the treatment for the feature film I wrote about the Monkees that will never be made. This is why I know so much! toclarksvilleandback.wixsite.com/to-clarksville

Monkee Mythbusters Thank you for posting Mike’s comment about needing to go back to studio musicians. Peter made a comment that when they were recording HQ, it took them so very more takes than the studio musicians would have. But... he was proud of the effort.

Thank you for posting these. I have loved the monkees since I was a little girl...I'm a second generation fan lol! I wished I was around in 1966. love them to this day. But it's nice to see accurate and true FACTS opposed to cliche and totally wrong info. Also it's great to see someone who actually has the passion to give out facts instead of what is hear say. For a true Monkees fan like myself it's great to see corrections to the rumors and myths that got out of control. Thanks and you've got a new subscriber :)

But what was said to make Micky quit drums? I always thought he was a fine drummer. Unique style of his own like Keith Moon or Ringo. Been one of my biggest inspirations in drums and vocals. been hooked on these guys since 85 86 reunion. I was 9
@monkeemythbusters32793 жыл бұрын
Exactly. What was said? Did someone ask him to step aside, or did he get the feeling he was no longer wanted and so he did so on his own, or did he become so frustrated one day that he destroyed his kit! What?! In the seventies Peter said Micky lost his confidence and didn't believe in himself anymore, in the eighties and nineties he said Micky could never repeat a triumph, and then after they got back together in recent years Peter said the reason they stopped recording as a band was a combination of abilities, personalities, and politics. I hope in Andrew Sandoval's revised "day-by-day" book he has more detail and can answer this question. Thanks for your response!

I think this is innovative and attention-grabbing and pleasant to hear. you did a very nice job with it and at my age I like the fact that you had the subtitles or captioning. the only suggestion that I might offer is too slow it down a bit. it could be because I was watching it on my phone, but, I miss a lot because you went through it so fast. but I really did like it!

+lpeek56 -- Yes, I would prefer it slower, too. Maybe because English is not my native language? Often I am at a loss what to do -- should I concentrate on listening or on reading?

Thanks for the comment Joe, According to Peter this is the million dollar question. Why did they stop recording as a group after HQ. Micky started to drum on PACJ. He drummed on Cuddly Toy and The Door Into Summer during which he’s heard on the session tape as being thrilled with how strong his drumming had become. And yet 12 days later Micky was out and Eddie Hoh was in as the drummer. Plus Hoh overdubbed Micky’s drumming on “Summer”. In the 70’s when asked why they stopped recording as a group Peter said Micky had lost his confidence; he just didn’t believe in himself anymore. If so, why? In the Eighties and Nineties Peter insisted Micky couldn’t repeat a triumph (drumming on an entire album) and that’s why he stopped. And now Peter says they stopped recording as a group because of a combination of politics, personalities and abilities. So does that mean Micky voluntarily stepped aside even though he thought his drumming had improved? Or did someone ask him to step aside? Who? Somebody said something to someone that led to Micky walking away from the drums. Obviously Peter wasn’t there to know. Micky was there but no one asks him this basic question. Personally I suspect Nesmith had something to do with it. He says that half way through recording Headquarters he realized it was a mistake and they should go back to using session musicians. Michael was never known for his patience and according to Peter he always got what he wanted. So that’s why I treat this important moment in Monkee history as still a mystery. Hope this answers your question.
