The Australian law, as you mentioned, is about sticking your arm out as a gesture of greeting. We may have zones without speed limit, but from what I learned from this video, the 98,6% of streets that do have one are enforced harsher. There is a small part that gets substracted from the measured speed, but for every km/h over that you have to pay. You might even lose your license for a month when going above 21 km/h, or even longer the faster you go.

Funnily enough this is why apps like Waze with warnings for both mobile and fixed speed cameras are completely legal here. It was quite a thing years ago and the national police as well as the DOJ stated that they did not care about the warnings, because the desired effect is to slow drivers down to the speed limit. I guess it also helps that all ticket revenue here goes to the central government, so there is no incentive to the cops, city, municipality or province to set up for profit speed traps. Also the central government only owns the major national highways, where most speed cameras are average speed zones.

Regarding speed limits, that's actually a huge misnomer that raising the speed limit means everyone drives faster. If everyone just adds another 10 to the limit, then it is STILL too low. Studies show that the majority of drivers drive a speed that feels reasonable limits are supposed to follow the 80% rule. Also, when the speed is so low as to be unrealistic, hardly anyone follows it except the hardcore rule followers, and then you get a massive speed differential between them and someone driving...enthusiastically, which is what's actually unsafe... My state (PA) is horrendous about speed limits on highways, and even the majority of people driving boring crossovers are routinely doing 20-30 over. Which means if you get caught driving a flashy car 5mph faster than the rest you get the book thrown at you. They won't spend money to loose revenue, they're absolute vultures out here. I guess all the money they steal from our highest gas/diesel taxes in the country that are supposed to be for road and bridge maintenance isn't enough.

I can’t legally drive yet, but I go like 60-65mph on a 55mph road and like 45-55mph on a 35mph road.
@dogjr2fast4u754 жыл бұрын
When it comes to speed, I usually go 5 over unless there's a lot of traffic I have to slot into, where then I would go with the flow. If I'm in a tight neighborhood, I'll go the limit. In a busy city obviously 15 under because how the f would you even reach the limit in a city. On the highway it's the flow exact speed of traffic except for that one Prius going 80.

Where I live (Illinois) we have those speed measurer thingos where it tells you your speed limit yet when you go 1 mph over the speed limit (not kidding) it starts flashing police lights until you slow down and cops will sit around these speed measurers to ticket people as much as possible. :/

5:40 Not only do roundabouts use less electricity, they also present an opportunity to place a park or other greenery in the center. If you wanna put traffic cameras on them, that's fine. They'll still just sip on power compared to the amount of electricity used to power an entire set of traffic lights and all the stuff needed to control said traffic lights. I'm not counting the cameras as power draw for ONLY the roundabouts in this scenario. Traffic lights have at least one of the following: 1) energized vehicle sensors under the road surface, 2) cameras and/or other visual devices used to detect the presence of traffic, and/or 3) timers built into the control modules. Each of these options use power, some more than others, but none of them are free in terms of electricity usage. American intersections also flow traffic through the middle, preventing the opportunity to plant greenery or place a small park in the center. Fun fact: Pittsburgh has a couple divided intersections without traffic lights. They're like halfway between traffic lights and roundabouts. They're a bit strange, but at least they're not dangerous, and they're not using any power.

@@MaddJakd I don't know where it was done but it was somewhere in the US. DOT and the NIH have also studied this and concluded that the amount of accidents didn't really change. In general, raising speed limits(to an extent) makes the roads safer, how much depends on the type of road and it's environment.

The picture at 6:13 is right around the block from me! That's the corner of Douglas and University Hills in Toledo, Ohio. One of the worst cameras in the city for getting tickets. The worst part is, I'm pretty sure the state already decided that money made from Red Light Cameras would cause the amount of we receive from the state to be reduced by the same amount thus not actually generating any extra revenue.

i live in southern mississippi so 80% of the long distance driving happens on a road that goes through woods on The Trace. flashing lights is the thing that saves 1000’s of dollars on car repairs. my dad is also a sales manager at a car dealership and is in a program that lets them drive new cars off the lot and use as a personal car while it isn’t sold. he was in a 21’ king ranch f150 and he got flashing lights which saved him from hitting one of the deer in a group of seven that we passed thirty seconds later.

In Queensland, Australia, you can use hand signals but that's the only time you can put your hand out of the window. And the only accepted signals are "stop" and "turn right" (right-hand drive, drive on the left). It's also specified that the only reason you can honk is to signal your position.
