Got a question for you pros . I am a trim carpenter . I was building a new hand rail and staircase in a really nice house . It was just me and my crew doing some windows and staircase and remodel of two fireplaces . Painters came in too paint all of the . Super nice oak . Base/case door jambs . Crown chair rail . Kitchen cabs and island . As it was all stained and finished . We left for a week let them have the house . Came back and the finish is cracking bad . U can run your hands across the wood work now and it feels like 400 grit . But the cracking and etc is BAD . Bad bad bad bad

I over head the painters and home owners talking . Painter said . There is a product. That they can spray on over lacquer . So they wouldn’t haft to use lacquer again . As home owners . Left for a week . They don’t want to leave again cause I know it’s a whole re paint . I guess my question is . Is there any such product .

The black dust is absolutely not from the hinges wearing. The black dust is graphite lubricant used when the doors were installed. Dry graphite in powder form is a common lubricant for doors and locks. You don’t want to use a wet lube because dust sticks to it and will get very grimy after a while.
@scotjohnson3208
@scotjohnson3208 3 жыл бұрын
Great Channel by the way!!! One thing I would add to the hinge is to clean it before lubing it. I clean the pin with a paper towel and then spray inside the hinge with a fast-drying degreaser. Make sure to protect everything around the hinge before spraying. Then lube up the pin with a thin coat of lube. This way the hinge pins will last longer and you will not have to go back next year to add more lube because of all the metal in the lube wearing out your door hinge.

Graphite dust does not come from the hinges wearing against each other. It’s there because we use graphite power as a lubricant for the hinges. It’s simply lubricant that has worked itself out of the hinges over many opening and closing cycles.

Years ago, I found it a nightmare trying to caulk with latex and especially silicone. The bead would be a mess and it was all over my hands. Those bead tools are a gimmick as well. One day, when I was in the plumbing store complaining about messy caulking jobs, a plumber overheard heard me. The plumber said to make a good bead, then squirt diluted dish soap from a small squirt bottle over the bead. Then pull the bead towards you with your index finger. I usually squirt my index finger as well. The result is a clean smooth bead that doesn't stick to anywhere else. Since then, I have been caulking toilets, sinks, tubs, window trim, baseboard, or anywhere you want a clean bead. My beads look better than most professionals.
