Agree with 100% of what you said. Furniture against the wall is soo middle ages 🤪 I think the trickiest thing with furniture against the wall is if your space is small, you can't create proper space to walk around unless you put furniture against the wall. One additional idea is visible technology in relaxing space (aka my home). I must cover up or hide the tv or computer screens because I find them terribly ugly and just remind me of the fast paced world we live in, when I strongly think our homes should be a place of solitude.

Another idea for easy "side table" is hanging a narrow shelf just above your sofa. You can put there your snacks and drinks while lounging

YESSSSS I am HERE for the anti-overhead lighting train. I have always detested overhead lights, and not only because I'm light-sensitive. It's glaring, washes out the surroundings, and just feels cold!

I used to feel bad about having my living room furniture all against the walls. And then I found myself in a house with another adult, stuck in all day due to the pandemic and cold climate, basically relying on home workouts to stop the process of turning into a giant blob :D Suddenly it turned out that extra empty space in the middle of the room is absolutely necessary. Who knew, eh? :)

Some old school tips that I think still apply: If a room has chairs, there should be at least two. Dining room rugs need to fit the whole table and the chairs. Nothing's more of an eye sore than a too short rug!

Me and my boyfriend moved to a house together around new years and instead of bringing furniture we had just to fill the space we decided let go of the pieces we didn't like and live in our space a while before we buy new furniture. Yes our house may not be so cosy right now, but its been great to really think about what we need and what we want, the 'want' being the hard one to figure out 😅 great video as always, would love to see more about this topic😊

This is such a good strategy! I'm also moving at the moment and I still have two entirely empty walls in the new apartment. It might be tempting to get sideboards and shelves for them right away but I'm gonna move in and see if I actually need more storage space. I really just got the bare minimum of what I know I'm gonna need and I'm gonna go from there - and maybe I don't need or want anything else at all.

I think in my childhood i developed scoliosis partially because of poor furniture placement. In our flat the couch was placed against a wall and the TV was not in front of the couch but on the side of it. As a result always when i watched Tv i had to sit asymmetrically leaning to the back support part of the couch with my legs sideways. Uhh and I hate when people place desks facing a wall. Who likes to rest their eyes when working by staring into a wall? :D When I create working space I always place my desk so that I'm looking through a window when sitting at it or into my apartment.

Finally, someone else in the world who dislikes overhead lighting! I think lamps are so beautiful (jewelry for your room). My less aesthetically astute friends make fun of me for my “lamp collection”, yet they all comment on how cozy and relaxing my home is. In regard to tables, I find it very uncomfortable when I go to someone’s home and you have nowhere to set your drink down. I’m a fan of small easily moveable tables or stools for this purpose.

I love large space in the middle of my living room. It pleasantly fits my yoga mat and I do not feel claustrophobic :) But, good points here, Jenny! Amazing topic to discuss, indeed. Thanks for the tips.

Love this video. I feel more "safe", when I put my tables and chairs close to a wall. Preferably there is a wall behind me, and I´m placed, so I can see the door. Love that we are different, but still can inspire each other. Lots of knus from Denmark.

If all the furniture is in the middle of the room, then there's not enough room to dance around, or do yoga while watching tv, or practice gymnastics. I want as much open floor space as possible. That's why I don't own a coffee table.

I love mirrors I may have a problem my husband has made me confine most of them to my closet!! I’m obsessed!! Estate sales are the best place to pick up beautiful ornate real wood mirrors for nothing! I bought a huge mirror at an estate sale for 40$ and recently saw an identical mirror in a castle!!

I agree with everything you said, especially the light thing! I have a small pink abat-jour in my bedroom which also makes the light pink and it’s a million times more relaxing, cozy and beautiful than the ceiling light. If anybody likes colours I would suggest to maybe try a coloured lamp, I have found it really boosts my mood :)

I like the minimalism aesthetics but for me nothing beats hugge. I need clutter to feel cozy. I need blankets and throws on the sofas, loads of pillows, that cute painting I drew when I was feeling down, colorful mugs lined up in the cupboard and tones of real plants sucking up my O2. I don't know if this is possible but I would love to see your thought process when interior designing a room. So for example, have an empty room and I would love to see how you'd design and and why you choose that piece of furniture. Adding one piece at a time explaining maybe "oh that wall has blah blah blah so I'm gonna do this or add that or remove that" something like that. I would love more interior designing tips from you!

I have two tiny foldable wooden stools, one serves as a bedside table (it’s low enough for my futon on the floor I sleep on) and the other moves around with me in the room, holding my laptop or a tray like yours, it even works great on my desk to elevate my laptop to a more agreeable height for online classes / video conferencing. Plus they look so cute! They are my best interior choice perhaps.

Yes, yes, yes - on so many levels! White space, light and thinking in "use cases" is just such a big impact. I'm a designer and a lot of people coming into my place always call my white wall for example empty.

Jenny, yes! I am thirsty for more interior design tips! I have just bought my first house and thinking about how to make all the rooms look and what to put in them is so stressful to me! I do not have a lot of furniture of my own so I will need to purchase things myself. Any tips are welcome! On colours in a room, materials, atmosphere, warmth or cool. I tend to look at current magazines but see a lot of the dark green jungle vibes with wood and metal details or even gold. It seems to be a trend of the time right now and I feel like going with it because of it, but I also feel like it will come to bite me back later on.

Use the trends in little ways like accent pieces, pillows or soft furnishings, that way when they feel outdated and you’re tired of them they will be easy to change. It would be a lot harder to get rid of jungle theme from a room painted floor to ceiling hunter green. 😉

Hey there, I do understand what you are talking about, however... (sorry here it comes) I lived in a small apartment myself, and while it is true you can’t put anything truly in the middle, there are ways to ease the symptoms of wall-itis. Try to re-orientate your furniture. Play around with different positions. Have a bookcase as a separator and decoration with only it‘s side to the wall, instead of the back. Maybe put a dresser that way. Have your desk away from the wall , facing the room... There are many possibilities but you have to play around with what you have and live with it for a while to see how it affects the space

One of my favourite rooms I've ever decorated was when I lived overseas for 4 months or so. I only had what I needed plus a couple of personal touches to remind me of home. Furniture was against the wall of my dorm room but the focus of the room was on the windows looking out to trees outside. My shelves didn't have much on them and my walls were only minimally decorated. I loved that room and I still look on it fondly.

I really like overfilled spaces. For me they feel cozy and homely and purposeful. I have actually tried those minimalistic and clean design choices with lots of free space and it just felt like a hotel room and a place that constantly misses something. It felt uncomplete and fed anxiety. As for tables to walls its just more practical as in tables wont interfere with walking this way. You need really huge rooms to afford to have them in the middle of the room. Additionally you can use the wall as a support for some things to not fall down by accident. That applies mostly to working tables tho.

The use of negative space is a concept in Japanese aesthetics as well. It's called "ma" and you'll notice that a lot of Japanese spaces don't have anything on the wall, flower arrangement considers the space around each bloom, and even shelving areas in traditional houses might only have one item in what is otherwise a large nook.

I have a small collection of teak trays that offer simple patterns even when unadorned on an ottoman. walking into my kitchen and seeing empty counters makes me feel at peace and unencumbered so I have a blank canvas to create a meal.
