Has anyone else’s taste in decor changed because of covid? I used to LOVE only neutrals, but staying home for so long I thought if I had to look at one more neutral color I was going to lose my mind! I REALLY started craving color so I thrifted a bunch of colorful pieces of art and now my home feels happier.

Yes me too! I think its because when you go out a lot, your home is the place where you find peace and calm again after going out in the 'chaos'. But when you always have to be there, you need it to also nourish and inspire you so more colour/interesting things/fun to look at... I suppose when we go out more again that we'll crave some more calm again in our home... I don't know though, not qualified whatsoever to make this conclusion :p

I love heavy contrast and monochromatic interior decor. I also LOVE exposed beams in the ceiling. It makes me feel like the room is less of a box and reminds me of the architecture that went into creating it.

I think a good thing to remember is also to feel how you use the space how you move in it. And the most crucial thing! Light! If you wait a little to decorate you can really see how the light falls in your room.

A great formula for your style interior. But as an interior designer who focuses on expressing my clients personal style into their homes the cave vs prarie analogy is far too simplistic. Also, a white walled room with not enough natural light just feels depressing. A dark ceiling can be essential and not at all heavy in large high ceiling spaces to give them more of a homely scale. And art can make an interior, fixing a few holes to move items around is not so hard. Even actual mistakes of wrong scale furniture, or too monotone, or too much repitition can be beautiful if done right.

Agreed. A heavy beam creates a sense of history as houses used to need them for structural soundness. Not having anything on the walls says to me I'm scared I'm going to have to move or I don't know what I like so I'm not going to do anything.

Totally agree with your decorating strategy-- slow and steady wins the race! Though I must admit, all-white-everything feels far too cold and clinical for me. I find that colourful, eclectic, even a little old-fashioned spaces feel the most cozy to me :) It's like... they feel more 'human'.

Totally agree with point #1! It's so important not to rush the process and feel the need to just buy buy buy the moment you move into the new space. I'm glad more people are giving themselves permission to just slowly discover their own taste and mind.

I was more of a cave person most of my life while living in the midwest region of the USA. But I am now transformed into a prairie person living in the tropics of Central America. Pale off-white porcelain floors, pale grey walls, powder blue Italian glass tiles as the kitchen backsplash, exactly one picture hanging. Everything designed to bring coolness into the space to balance the heat and humidity of the environment.

I'm a interior designer. I agree with using the bulk of your money on quality pieces such as dining tables sofas and beds that you will like for 5+years. All white spaces give parents anxiety because of keeping things clean. They only show Scandinavian modern style but there are so many other styles you can love!

I think you also need to consider when you are actually at home. Big windows with a nice view are great if it´s a bright Sunday morning in spring or autumn, but if you are at home mostly at night or during summer holidays, you can feel either exposed or you have to keep blinds down to not let too much heat in.

I live in a dark log cabin and it's true I am a cave woman. I also live out in the country, so I am mostly outside. It's nice to have a cave out in the country. If I lived in the city, I would want my dwelling to feel more airy like yours.

Great video! We’re all so different and these videos are interesting. I always admire people who are minimalists I really do but I’ve tried and it’s just not me 🤣 I love having nick naks and nostalgic ethemera on my big dark bookcases covered in ‘tacky’ fake ivy and string lights. I love being reminded of the silly art my sister drew us when we first moved in as I’m walking into the kitchen, or laughing at the dumb Phil Mitchell calendar on the wall, or my Bowie fridge magents. To some people it would understandably do their head in and feel ‘unpeaceful’ and I totally get it but I think I’ve finally accepted that being surrounded by crap that makes me happy is the way I have to live. To my very stylish minimalistic mother I am definitely the bag lady from labyrinth 🤣

You are a design anthropologist lady! 🎯🤩 I love to decorate a room like layers of an onion. I don’t decorate all at once. I thrift shop n estate sale hunt, layering the room with pieces I love and that fit not fight together. Beautiful shaker simple raw cherry wood table was recently completed with a simple architecture mid-century matte black low pedestal bowl in center. The contrast is the severeness of the table offset by the low roundness of classic 50’s.

I learned this year that I’m both a prairie and cave person. I used to live in a dark studio and loved the coziness, but would get depressed in the winter bc it was too dark. But this past year I moved into this beautiful modern apt with large windows and stark white walls and I loved the airiness. But very quickly I got kinda stressed out bc I didn’t have a safe space to crawl into. I’m moving again and I’m planning on painting the bedroom a darker color so I have a cozy cave space to hide in! Turns out I’m full of contradictions, let’s hope this works! 😄🙏

I couldn’t agree more with the first point!! I bought my apartment 2 months ago and I’m almost finished with my interior. I had a lot of money problems before moving in so I couldn’t buy everything I wanted.. but thank GOD for that! I can’t believe how my cart on IKEA online used to look like. It was too much unnecessary stuff, too much impulse “buying”. I replaced more expensive furniture with cheaper furniture because I could not wait until it arrived in stock etc. I’m so happy that I had the patience to wait. You really need to live and get to know the space your apartment before buying the interior stuff!

I think you may be on to something with people liking to feel enclosed versus the feeling of breathing free; like animals who either live under the ground, or in some type of nest above ground/in a tree. Maximalist vs. Minimalist - with all shades of variation in between. I love to visit maximalist spaces and appreciate them visually, but I want my space to feel open and airy.

For me prairie or cave can be very nice, I like good design with natural mood. Complexe or simple a lot of different things can be beautiful and make a place special. Design is amazing, I am hopeful for the futur because of it. Clever minds conscious of the current problematics can resolve situations and create new ways of living and appreciating life. Architects and designer have wonderful jobs. I think they should have a more important place in our societies, to create better cities and homes. It will have a huge impact on mental health and ecology. The human mind can be so good if we let it time and space to express itself.
