Pot, knife, waterproofing layer, fire starter, cordage. I think the big thing that would change dependent on location would be the order of priority and the form factor. The no camping gear survival bug out challenge: You have 15 minutes to grab what you can out of your house with the caveats that you can't have bought it for camping and it has to fit into a school backpack.

A gun with ammo. A good big knife. A tent. A way of making fire. A pot to cook food in or boil water in to purify it. 5 things just aren’t enough though. My edc has a flashlight, a knife and 2 multi tools. I’d want a sleeping bag or blanket to keep me warm. I’d want a med kit to help me survive any injuries or illnesses. I’d want a map & compass to help me navigate terrain. I’d want cordage, and a tarp. A fishing pole if I’m near water, or snare wire if I’m nowhere near water. Most of all I’d want someone who would be willing to work with me and help us survive. Solo survival is unlikely.

I'm a knife guy too... [no knife, no life] but I'll choose the axe, a ferro rod, the small pot, the blanket, and a tarp/poncho ... it's winter and you'll need to chop more wood to burn, than cut and carve... to stay warm and dry is priority #1

It is important to remember in some places of the world, you can't really count on there being good materials for making blades and containers. There is a reason the Indians traded heavily for metal blades and containers.

Stanley Cook sets are awesome. Mine goes everywhere. No matter the length or location for my hikes, I always make it a point to pause, enjoy my surroundings, make some coffee, and just be for awhile.

Machete is multitool of southern hemisphere but up North it's hatchet. A lot of guys are trying to reinvent the wheel adapting kukri or other cutting tools of cultural signifance when perfect tool for the enviroment (and a historical one) is already there. Unparalelled for shelter building or getting firewood in the forest, can make ice holes with it. It's better weapon than any knife will ever be, you can do more precise work holding it close to the axe head and even use as a cutting tool holding it by butt with your feet. Axe is way easier to sharp than a knife in the field and replacing a handle is not a big deal. Make it a long, straight one and it becomes both walking cane and better for felling trees

When I was much younger I went out of my way to challenge myself in the backcountry and the Marines. If you don't push yourself to find your "limits" you will never be completely prepared. Find your limits then try to push beyond what you think you can do. However when Covid and the shutdown happened I discovered the hole in my Survival Skills should have included Combat Shopping techniques especially when paired up against the heretofore unprepared Urban Folks. I usually have a month or two supply of consumables such as toilet paper, gasoline medications, ect. The first time I went to Costco to add to my stock I was confronted by a line that approached 1/4 mile long. I had to take a video to show friends and family because they would not believe that story. I still had a couple months supply so I just waited for a better day. For weeks afterwards I found sold out items regularly. I was still stocked up a couple months ahead on most items but nearly ran out of some supplies like toilet paper and some food items. The coming years may test us all.

I would still want a cutting tool. even though you may have been able to always get a fire started without the need for one, you are putting an awful lot of trust in not ever needing one.

Agreed, aside from that, there aren't many "basic" tools that have more uses than the knife, basic hygiene to self defense and countless other uses. I wouldnt think of going out without a knife

As for knives me good with my old Buck 410. Next my trusty and very much loved 20 cup coffee percolator. Next a plain mess kit. Bic lighters must have. Next a fishing pole with line and hook and a gun, not too big and not too small. As for cover and bedding I can make do with what I find.

For training purposes minimizing your gear would teach you valuable lessons, that being said given the choice I’d never intentionally put myself in a potentially real survival situation with only 5 items. I currently have 5-6 small but useful items in my pockets anytime I leave the house, the only time they aren’t on my person is when I’m sleeping or showering. Good vid that got me thinking so 👍🏻👍🏻 up! Side note, the chunk of file is a great multipurpose tool that could serve as a steel, could be used to make larger shavings off a ferro rod, or as a metal file in a pinch! I have worn out files from my grandpa so that would make it a nostalgic tool for me as well, two more thumbs up to you sir!

Some good information, I think your 5 item choices are pretty solid - Glad to see someone producing the ferrorod with the fatwood handle. I remember first seeing them about 25 years ago at a Gene Ward seminar. Gene had some great ideas on wilderness survival. Of course, I still have the one I purchased from Gene way back then. Love the MSR Stowaway pot, much more stable than the Stanley, although the Stanley is more packable.

Thank you for the video, good advice as always. I always have a piece of gear with me that has sentimental value. It may not always be the best or most advanced piece of kit I own, but it definitely acts as a moral booster. Now that hunting season is almost over I am looking forward to getting back into the woods with my 10yr old son to work on some more primitive skills with him.

I'd go GSO 4.7 or TRC Mille Cuori + Fiskarss X7. For going ultra light for mobility, I'd go Bushcraft Black + Victorinox Rucksack + Bahco Laplander. The grandpa knife is as cool as it gets Great moemries!!! Hope you keep it forever!

Cutting tools - not just sharp rocks ( flint knapping is dangerous and not for an amateur in a survival situation ). You can almost always find broken glass or old tin cans and such like trash - the stuff turns up in even the most remote wild areas.

I understand that choosing five items is a mental exercise that allows us to consider what items are the most useful to pack or carry, but I consider a knife essential to carry all the time and then for the urban environments we need such items as a sillcock key and a can opener. I dont see any reason to limit ourselves to strickly 5 items.

I get the idea but let's be honest yes stranded on top of a Cold mountain you would want hot food or something warm more than a knife or cutting tool. But stranded in the desert you would not want for a sleeping bag. Yes I'm sure the circumstances at the moment would make you want something more than a knife but with a cutting tool you can create a way to make fire or a warmer shelter. Yes you can do a lot without it but the advantage you get is astronomical. There is a reason since its inception man has carried a cutting tool. I feel if you were dressed appropriately for the conditions your concern for a want would be minimal. To be honest I feel with the invigoration of Bushcraft from the 80s on plus the rise of the internet and the ability to share research discuss and disseminate information I feel we as a community have really nailed down the essentials. I mean from utzi to present it is clear what works a reliable way to make fire a cutting tool some cordage a portable shelter be it tarp blanket or a animal hide and with it's invention a metal container to hold and purify water with boiling. I mean maybe a maybe a small camp x depending on how much wood processing you really need to do. Just my humble opinion.

5:17 Ok. Yep. It's me. Superstitious 😊. When an axe or knife bites me in a 'stiching' way? I get rid of it. I really believe an axe and a knife has a 'soul' or a kind of spirit if you will. Something like an Indonesian Kris .... You know? So, if an axe or knife bites me I believe we don't have a good relationship and we never will. Cause it wants my blood. I have a little pocket edc knife. Have it for almost 15 years now. Use it extensively, every day. It's nothing more than a handle and the spine nowadays 😂. Never bit me. We are such good friends. I desperately need a new knife but I can't get myself to buy a new one because we're huge friends. Never left my pocket in all those years. So in my weird way of thinking I'd say: lose the axe. If it bites it aint your friend. And in the worst times, when you really need a tool that is your friend? An axe that has bitten you will fail. Dude .... If only you could see what that $14 little edc knife has been through in all those years. Even you would be proud of her 😂😂 she never bit me so she will be with me until she breaks.

hey Jason. question on your msr pot. i see you drilled a hole in the top edge of the pot and have a cut out on the lid. what was the purpose?
