Basia, you crack me up! You’re like an oracle of jewellery hacks and tips 😂 It’s so amazing and so generous of you. It’s also really lovely to see how you’re always growing and learning and expanding your knowledge. Thank you so much! The clipboards are amazing; I was half expecting you to create a cheeseboard on one 🤣 Much love and appreciation 🤩💕

hahaha, OMG, the cheeseboard! Why didn't I think of that 🤣 I love that one! But to be honest, knowing me, and how much I like to snack while working, this wouldn't be a surprising sight in my workshop 😂 In all seriousness, I really like these boards, they're so useful and these were just some of the uses. I always keep one close by, where I note all of the tips whenever I think of one or find it online, just like Steve said in his comment! 😀 And of course, it's my pleasure to share it with you here, this channel brings me so much joy, especially connecting with likeminded people and creators! Thank you for watching and your sweet comment 🌺

Oh my goodness, that's a wonderful news!! I'm so happy and grateful, thank you so much Deb ❤️❤️❤️ I'm sure you will love it! It's one of the tools I use most often, not only to make actual jewelry pieces, but also to make little elements (sometimes I need to raise the gem a little in the bezel, and little discs work as a charm and do the job). The mallet is another great tool, I use it a lot for stamping when I need a bit more force. I'm very happy for you! Enjoy using your new tools and have fun making discs 🥰😍

@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing I wondered if I could use that mallet to stamp ! And did you get a bench this year too? I have been thinking of ordering a regular jewelers bench too. Any suggestions ?
@stephencoster95323 жыл бұрын
@@jadeheart911 Hiya, yes you can use the mallet to stamp I believe. Basia got her bench last year I believe, where does the time go? I got a Durston bench this year, the 5 draw one, wonderful bench, all hardwood. I got the shelf also from Durston last year for my first bench, it's great too. a lot of space for bits/tools/etc at not a lot of money. My first bench was very basic and not hardwood, but worked well, I'm going to use it for drilling and polishing, ie, a dirty bench. Stay safe...Steve...

@@jadeheart911 She is wonderful when you consider that she's only had a few lessons, everything else she has picked up from watching KZbin videos and talking like this on here picking up how somebody else does it. I'm envious of the cutter, it's top of the range. One thing to remember, if you put the hole you are punching nearest you, at 6 o'clock position, put a shim, a piece of material the same thickness as the piece you are going to punch, at the 12 o'clock position. This will stop the top plate tilting and the punch going in wonky and damaging the punch and the bottom plate. 1mm or 18 gauge may not seem enough to do this but it is a precise tool. Best of luck with your purchase. I'm the same as Basia, I'm self-taught by watching YT videos, Oh and reading every book I can get my hands on, Basia is the same. Read every book you can buy or borrow. I'm reading Stone Setting by Scott and polishing by Stephen Goldsmith, both at the top of their tree. Have fun...Steve...

Awesome video. Where exactly did you buy your timer from? If you stop in between making one piece of jewelry, do you pause the timer, write down where you stopped and add the rest of the time it took you to finish it later? What about a set of jewelry pieces like matching earrings, a bracelet, and necklace? Do you count the total amount of time you spent on making the whole set or just one piece?

Among those great tips is hidden a new use for the shells I've collected and which are just sitting in my studio.. it never occurred to me to use them for holding the beads as I work! Beats holding them in my hand and trying to prevent them from slipping all over the place or have the skittering around in a bowl. Thank you.. 🥰

Thank you so much Alicia! Such a sweet comment, that always makes my day 🌺😍 The move is going very well, I'm slowly settling in and the workshop is also coming along nicely! Should be ready by the end of August :) I do keep this type of paper work for some time, as I noticed that I had to reference previous pricing at least several times. However, now I make additional, shorter notes of pricing and some important info on a separate piece of paper, and I don't keep the detailed one for longer than couple of months. Usually, the info I needed was the actual pricing (and the final price), not necessarily how I got there. That's why I don't keep all of the lists for longer :)
@stephencoster95323 жыл бұрын
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithingif you store the piece of A4 you write the materials/time list on, you could put the price you charged on the back with the date of each sale, and the cost of stones and silver/gold on the materials list, that way you can know exactly why you charged what you charged.

Basia, I love all the tips, already bought bottle warmers secondhand, just for €5,00 and even one for free 😁 going to look for those wooden paperclips. I have a very cheap electric nailfill tool, do you ihink I can use it to polish my jewelry? Greetings
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing2 жыл бұрын
what a great find and a bargain! I hope they will be useful :)) AS for the tool, I think you can absolutely try experimenting with it and see if it's able to handle silver and metals. I know that many people go for electric motors for nails. the only downside could be that it may not be powerful enough. But you'll be able to tell and I think it's good enough to start with! :)

Hiya, again, again, the stone picker-upper, some people use beeswax mixed with charcoal dust, it worked too, but I prefer white-tac, a little more sticky than blue. Love the timer, when I get around to following your system I'm so going to get one. Will you show us how you make off the elastic to the findings? I used to do a knot that I would glue into a fold-over finding that you then connected to a clasp. Stay safe...Steve xx...
@stephencoster95323 жыл бұрын
I had to do that one quick because I knew it would be difficult to be the first comment otherwise. I love these, and seeing the old workshop, what a pleasure, how goes it with setting up your new one? The clipboards are wonderful hacks, well thought of dear lady. The sticky tape waiting for the stones was ace, but the extra worktop has my vote. I love the toothbrush, doesn't make your toothpaste taste funny though? All those bubbles in your mouth, but if Mum says go and wash your mouth out with soap... What are you going to do, but do it! But I bet it cleans the jewellery up to a high shine, with nothing left behind, I love the no residue finish! I watched a YT video some time back a real goldsmith making an engagement ring from bits of gold wire and plate. After ultrasonic comes steam clean after that comes tooth brush. I've not found an electric toothbrush yet, but I have just got some bamboo handle toothbrushes and Q-tips. They use plastic brushes, as no one has found a substitute that works as well, yet! Who knows, maybe more to come after I watch again and read your comments? Steve xx

Yes, me AGAIN, AGAIN!!! Tips and hacks? I can't remember where I got these from but here we go... When you are working on wax carving and need to sand the surface, use Bosch net-type sandpaper Normal paper gets bunged up super quick but the net allowed the wax to fall through the holes, you may have to tap it... To polish the surface of the wax, use pencil erasers, the wedge-shaped ones that fit over the end of a pencil work best. I'll write more when I remember them. Stay safe...Steve...

that elastic cord has a short life span. I don't know how many bracelets I had to re-string on real bead wire, and how many beads were lost...not a good idea for valuable beads
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing3 жыл бұрын
hmm, maybe some cords aren't of same quality as the others, because I've never had any issues. I also use double or more strings too. A single string would definitely be not enough. But I completely agree that these strings are not the best choice for valuable gems
