Having been on Wave Rover after Alan made it home to PEI, I can attest to the fact that he is indeed a minimalist. It amazes me how much sails that you can fit into a small sailboat. It was great meeting Alan last fall and sharing a couple cold beers. Wave Rover is a great little boat to take you anywhere you would want to go. That boat will handle more then the sailor. Great job Alan.

Yep. Am in total agreement about the planning, responsibilities and rewards of an "adventure". My greatest was unassisted west-to-east crossing of US via bicycle. That was 11 years ago. Congrats to you and wishing ya GOOD LUCK with your newest Wave Rover and the additional adventures it will bring to you!

I have watched this and many of the other episodes many times (and of course binge-watched all of them when I first discovered them) and they are super informative and, so importantly, genuine and based on first hand experience. This is also how I first heard of the series drogue and started my own research into them reading and watching everything I could get a hold of, from KZbin videos, sailing forums, magazine articles and the US Coast Guard study/report. They all supported what you talked about. Finally I placed my order for one with Ace Sailmakers (I simply do not have the time nor the skill to make one of the quality and workmanship required). Having ordered it I feel that my own adventure which is still three years away has become even more real. Thank you Alan and happy birthday again.

I have sailed a little in bigger boats but have sailed my dinghy a lot. I've returned from very spirited sails and felt that same rush. For you big time soloists like you and the Norwegian, the rush must be so much more encompassing.

I have done a lot of solo sailing but on a much larger boat and I am always nervous when I go forward in weather. The fact that I’m tied into a jack line gives me scant reassurance. If I were tossed over the lifelines I imagine myself slammed up against the side of the boat unable to pull myself up and I think of the last scene of Moby Dick and Gregory Peck on the side of that whale as it dove and sounded. I have a nagging suspicion that a Jackeline simply enables the recovery boat to recover both the boat and the body at the same time!

When I was in the Navy we considered 2 miles to be accurate when at sea. On a small boat with significant movement shoot for less than 5 miles. Once in sight of land switch to visual pilotage.

Alan, if I understand your heavy weather tactics progression. *Heave-To *Run Bare Poles *Run Bare Poles Warps *Run Bare Poles JSD Of course the Running is great when no Lee-Shore. Is there a place for Fore-Reaching in there somewhere (make progress away from rocks?) Also let’s say you chose to Heave-To and conditions get worse than expected. It seems to me transitioning to “running” will put you broadside for a bit with no speed. How would you handle that? Thanks in advance!
@RoversAdventure2 жыл бұрын
You have it right, it's hard to imagine the exact situation as there will always be other factors such as current of wind shift. The best tactic is to get sea room by beating off from a lee shore. Even when heaved to, Wave Rover was able to make a tiny bit of headway to windward.

I really enjoyed this video! I'm a beginner sailer that has only sailed on lakes in a friend's sharpie. I'm planning to build a flat bottom boat of my own this year. I really appreciate your minimalist preferences, as I'm that way too. I'm into homestead as well! We just don't want to live a regular life. :)

I wouldn't want to live any other way.

I have a Contessa 26 and intend to do some Great Lakes and coastal ocean sailing. For now anyway. Your videos are terrific as is your advice. The Mark 3 is something I need to consider.

@@RoversAdventure My mast was modified by the previous owner to be pivoted to allow him to raise and lower it himself. He also built a self steering device and I haven’t figured out how to operate either. He’s dead now so no asking him.

So I know this video posting is far from current but I just gotta comment anyhow. I was born and raised on PEI and while I know that technically Alan is "from away" he has the island charm and way of talking after having lived there quite a while. I love the straight forward yet unassuming and somewhat humble turn of phrase while dispensing succinct and valuable information.

I sail my Wharram Tiki 38 foot Catamaran as a solo sailor, currently in the Med working around Covid. It is a minimalist boat and has crossed the Atlantic. I keep it simple and can repair just about anything on board. The best part is that it is comfortable at sea and fast, 10 knots is not unusual.

I met James Wharram years ago on the Brisbane river in Australia. I subsequently built a Tiki 26. His dinghy ran out of gas so I gave him some on his way to his anchorage. I love the simplicity of his designs. Fair winds
