#1 Amazing Slow Downer by Roni I use it all day and with every student- the desktop app is superior to the phone app but both get it done. #2 Chord Ai bring in KZbin videos and any song on your phone and control the audio- and it can identify chords but it’s real strength is control #3 sending myself notes from the phone- audio or written stuff like song ideas, note about watching that Jens video about apps(shameless plug), making set lists for the band so I practice playing that list... u name it. Great video

Two fantastic apps are: Time Guru from Avi Bortnik - an advanced metronome that for example lets you skip beats randomly - a great way to build your "internal clock", and Tuplet Trainer from Mulle Holmquist - an app that teaches you any tuplet (e.g. 5 over 13) in an extremely easy and almost disarming way.

Strongly aggree. Time Guru helped me a lot to improve my timing, particularly my inner metronome by ommitting the click for one bar as a start and then moving on to silence for several bars. App is simple and offers great flexkbility. I hardly use the random function.

Chord! app is my fav. You can search scales/chords by selecting a handful of notes, get chord voicing ratios at a glance (2 3rds, 1 5th, 2 roots), and TONS of stuff. If you want to know why two or more notes sound good together this app will give you several reasons why.

I used Chord! all the time. Incredibly deep app. A little cumbersome with the interface, but 100% worth it. Some apps I pay for, I think "Eh....." This is one that is worth WAY more than the $5 it costs.

This is a nice list! Some others I really love: - AnyTune+ (the UI isn't great - it's horribly overcomplicated - but it's been a fantastic resource on mobile and desktop) - Tenuto - EarMaster (I use this with FunctionalEarTrainer because they both cover different ground) - Piascore Tuner (it's just nice and simple, and especially useful if you also play a transposing instrument like trumpet) - Impulse metronome (a UI that's really simple to get really crazy results) - Tiny Decisions (not a music app, but a randomiser. I put key signatures and songs into it, and let it randomise what I'll practice and in what key, just to avoid comfort zones)

Jens, you would love the app Modacity. It works through creating exercises or task. Each task can be put into a play list. Within each task, the metronome settings are saved and any recording you make of yourself performing the task is saved there too. You can compare older performances to newer performances that way. There are note sections as well as reflections and feedback. Essentially, I might create a new task that is playing the triads from the c major scale. I could then set my metronome to whatever speed I am comfortable with. As I get better, I can increase the speed. The app will remember the speed every time I do this task. I can also record and instantly play back. Fantastic!!

Great stuff Jens! Agree with your thoughts on iReal - it’s great and bad at the same time. I use all those apps you mentioned. In addition a couple of extra apps I find useful are 1. Time guru. The gradual speed up and random mute is handy. 2. Scannable. Great for taking pics of charts and it straightens and cleans up the charts (from there I use for score to read them on my iPad). 3. Voice recorder - handy when I don’t want to record video, which is what I usually do. Cheers man, hope you’re well

@@JensLarsen the iPad is a game changer. Much easier to find charts in there than loose pages which get lost or ripped. Also it’s backlit so way easier to see. Etc etc. I use forscore which is a fantastic program for organising / marking up charts etc

My favorite app is “Capo”. It is useful for transcribing and learning to play your favorite solos. It can play any mp3 at any speed you like, loop on sections you define, and assist in finding the notes with a display of the spectrogram. It’s not free, but it is inexpensive. Also... only available on Macs, iPads, and iPhones.

Perfect Ear. Great ear training app. Premium version is 100% worth it. If you are a non driver in a commute to work it’s a great way to pass an hour. I’ve gotten noticeably better in transcribing because of this.

excellent video, Solo looks great, can't wait for the android version. Amazing Slow Downer is an essential part of practice for me. It's basically a song player/looper with Key features: key change in semi tones but also fine tune in cents fine tuning loops so I can get the loop feel perfect to just keep jamming over a solo section on repeat auto speed up settings where you can modify the amount it speeds up and how often it speeds up hooks up to Spotify

I would recommend polymetrnome. It is great for practicing rhythmic superimposition. Like 5 over 4, 7 over 4, etc. And you can specify where you want the clicks to occur in relation to the main pulse.

Thanks for sharing this. I started using this app called clef because I wanted to learn and improve my sight reading to be able to play the standards from the real book. It's a long way to go but I can read notes in simple keys now. It's probably not for people who went to music school but useful for some who want to start sight reading.

hey jens--still using drum genius every day since you first recco'd it. I run it thru a very good speaker array and it sounds like a real drummer with big round bass drum tones and lots of detail to play off on from the snare and hat. i don't waste time practicing anything without it when it. been learning some pretty demanding country vocabulary to work on hybrid picking and there are actually 3 very good country grooves as well as all the two-feel swing grooves so also great for country. one thing i'll say about iReal Pro--the changes are not terrible and it's gotten better IMO thru all the updates. and, if you run the app through a good speaker set up and dial down or delete the harmony instrument altogether and just use the drums and bass, it sounds way less cheesy. Not as good as drum genius but i find that makes it sound less soulless. plus you get the changes to read in time.

I would recommend the Time Guru Metronome. It is developed by Avi Bortnick and has a lot of possibilities for easily making odd meters. It has a nice feature where it randomly silence some beats so the metronome doesn't become a crutch. Also, beats can be counted in different languages - quite funny.

I've been using an Android app lately called smartChord and it seems to work well. There are multiple tools in it. I really like the chord name function which helps me locate and name the variations of chords.

But I use it every day. - There's a build in recorder on the smartphone. I don't use it often, but it's useful, when you need it. Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro on an ipad is by far my favourite mobile app. It is easily the best band in a box/ backing track app, with a vast amount of theory info and variations built in. I love Solo too... the opposite of Mapping Tonal Harmony - minimalist and focused.

What I have installed is the 'Universal Tuner'. The design is not much great, but you can tune with different freequency's. I like to customize 432 Hz for A4 and tune the whole string's with that.

I know what you mean about the IrealPro app, the midi sounds and swing feel are only serviceable at best. On the other hand you can play tunes in any key and tempo you wish, you can enrich or modify the changes, or put together your own changes to practice over. But it is not of the quality of the Aebersold tracks and certainly no substitute for playing with other human beings. Unfortunately for someone like me it is the only option I have, even before COVID the opportunities in my area to play jazz were quite limited and the one local jazz jam went on hiatus due to restrictions and at this point might never return.

I'm using a chord finder app, I imagine it's similar to many, but I find that it only suggest what the chord could be as a whole or discreet chord not as part of an extended chord in the way you might analyse a voicing, now there's an idea for an app! I would like to recommend the Android app ´´A-tuner Lite.´´ It is the most accurate tuner I have found, the allowable pitch error is 0.5 cent. You will really note the difference when playing some chord voicings.

Personally I like 'Metronomerous' (Knoedelbart) as a metro App it is without doubt the best ( I bought the premium to support the developer) - if you use an App regularly you definitely should support the developer. For tuning I use Strobe Tuner Pro (paid too - A4Tune Labs). I also have Circle of Fifths by Josh Liebe and because I have the great Fender Mustang GTX I have the Fender Tone app which is excellent. Please support the developers of Apps. I also support Jens Larsen through Patreon - anyone who regularly watches his videos needs to subscribe. Please buy/pay for the Apps you use regularly. They are worth it many, many times over. Jens too....

Is there an app for learning jazz language, in the style of language learning apps like Babbel or DuoLingo? I know the analogy isn't perfect but I'm looking for something that would actually aid working on jazz vocabulary in a structured way. Something that would help me build my own library of licks, gamified... that's my dream.

Bonus App : Music Theory Tiles! If your an Android user , there’s this app that turns the Circle of Fifths into an interactive game that allows users to memorize the fifths of notes by sliding tiles ; C sliding into Another C tile yielding a G note for instance. I found it very useful, so if your bored waiting on the train or a flight or in a waiting room, you can refresh yourself on your Fifths pretty easily - and fun too
