So clearly we missed the mark on this one. The reason is it was extremely difficult finding clips that fit the topic, and were copyright free/licensable. I emailed multiple different channels asking to license their footage to no avail. Finally, I was able to put together a list of 5 and honestly, was pretty pleased with it. I thought, and still think, these videos are pretty dope and the waves pretty damn big, but clearly that's not the general consensus. I have already begun work on a new video, and am taking far more time sourcing clips. I hope to make up for disappointing! Thank you!

In 2015 I was on a 2 week southern Caribbean which left out of New York. On the way back we where in a storm trying to race back due to a medical emergency. The displays where reading 25+ feet. Waves breaking off the side of the cruise ship and throwing the furniture on the top Ledo deck. It was kinda terrifying. I drank through hoping for the best but still terrifying

Those were not monster waves. Monster waves (rogue waves, freak waves), especially in storms, are more like 20-30m (70 -100ft) tall, not 5m. More precisely, they are defined as waves whose height is more than twice the significant wave height, or twice the mean of the largest third of waves in a given sea state. What we have here instead is "5 examples of some typically rough seas caught on camera". Or as my grandfather would say, "5m waves? Back in my day we called that Tuesday". Calling this footage "monster waves" is like calling dust devils "tornadoes" :(
@Underworld5s
@Underworld5s 2 жыл бұрын
It was so difficult finding footage to license. I would still consider these monster waves personally, especially considering no real footage of a rogue wave exists. Just my opinion. If I could simply use any footage I wanted, you could bet the video would feature more rare-exclusive clips, but that is not the case.

@@Underworld5s My issue isn't with the footage -- it's fine, and I enjoyed it. My issue is with the click-bait title. Now, say "5 encounters with treacherous 9or incredible) waves caught on camera" would have been spot on and probably would have gotten you the same engagement. But a monster wave isn't an opinion -- it is a clearly defined scientific, mathematical, and meteorological phenomenon. If you slap that in the title, then you need to deliver. I get that this is an entertainment channel. But with just a little more vetting this could become a serious and classic educational channel as well. Your content and delivery are always top notch. Just be a little more careful with the titles so that professionals can share all of your videos too, and not just laymen :)

20+ years in the US Navy, 13 years of that stationed onboard 3 different ships. Sailed through Super Typhoon Zelda while on the USS Essex LHD-2, we were taking 19 degree rolls, and the smaller (20,000 ton) amphibs with us were rolling 40 degrees to each side. The other time that comes to mind was off the Oregon coast about 50 miles on the USS Momsen DDG-92, headed from Everett Washington to San Diego CA. The 5" gun would be buried by seas sweeping over the bow and heavy spray was hitting the bridge. (and that's the only time that I was ever sea sick)!

While at sea I witnessed green water splashing over the bow of our ship. When I say green water, I'm not talking about wave crests, as in white water agitated spray. As a sailor by trade, some of these "massive" waves are dime a dozen to us in the North Sea. I've been at sea in 20 meter waves, which ended with the other crew having to go into drydock for repairs after the crew change. And the ship in Brazil wouldn't have gotten any water into the superstructure, as there are watertight doors on every deck.
@timothykappel198
@timothykappel198 2 жыл бұрын
Why'd the boat have to go to dry dock? As long as your not running in the bad weather you should be fine. Most of the time when the anchor doesn't hold you run weather patterns. Your pretty much idling around just riding the waves not crashing into them.

Going across the tip of South Africa from the Indian Ocean to the Atlanta Ocean we ran into a storm. The captain said they were 7.5 meters high and 75 mph winds for 4 days.

Yeah but breakers are way sketchier then unbroken waves was out the other day in like 15-20ft and the only scary part was the 7footer that almost broke of the boat while leaving the channel.

This is just sad to see, when i was in the Navy in Norway, and was sailing in the northsea, 4-5m waves was commen, not a fun ride bty any meens, but 8-10m is waaaay bigger remember the first time i saw one, the boat i was on was a fregat, and was 100m long and 1500 tons. After going over a wave, the hole boat was under all the waves, we just saw water all around us, like walls. and then it cut though the next one, experiance of a lifetime, but was scary too.

I spent 2 years on a USCG Lightship at Nantucket Shoals and this video is nothing. We rode out the nor'easter of 76 in a 128 foot ship with winds hitting 120 knots and waves of 50 feet. We dragged our 7000 pound mushroom anchor 12 miles off station and it was a pretty rough ride that night.

Right, I'm pretty sure that very close to 100% of people I know have been on a boat, with the only exceptions being the very young and people with phobias that prevent it. Even if I lived inland, I'm pretty sure it would be quite a bit higher than 1%.

Key here is 'why'. For research, true rogue or freak waves (not just large waves/rough seas) need to be filmed and all sea going ships would benefit from continual filming. Otherwise, posting on VT a collection of ordinary vids serves no purpose, whoever posts them.

most of the natural waves in this video are only sea states 2, maybe 3. On a chart rating that goes up to 5 all of the ones shown except the nuclear test are all literally moderate waves and are the most common experienced. none can be considered "massive" There is another sea state chart that goes to 9, but that is just more detail. the charts we used were more simplified so you can easily tell the approximate sea state with doing no measurements and only using your eyes to guesstimate

Regarding the 2. Video. If the crew leave doors or windows open in these kind of conditions they must be truly stupid. Especially if the stern wall is so low.

It’s a tug boat. It’s designed to tow, which is why it has a low deck on the rear. Not only that, it’s an ocean going tug so she is built to handle water like that.
