In Texas state water they can harvest Red Snapper year round. Charter boats go bottom fishing around the rigs and any structure to target them. Freelining live baits near there gets you into a largely untapped fishery I have learned. I am pretty sure the first bite was a nice king as well. Great to see another vid!!

Aloha from Seattle, Dan! It's good to see you back after your Atlanta and San Antonio PCS moves. As a Honolulu-born Army Aviator, knowing your roots and your wife's continued DOD career, it got me worried to not see a fresh video of your great yak-fishing, lens and video editing work on your channel. Having recently completed 30 years as a Honolulu ex-pat turned 28-year career aviator that retired right at 30, it's great to see that you're transitioning to the ATP world well ... considering we both flew the OH-58 at some point in our careers, 767-cargo is a HUGE life and airframe transition. I've lived in Seattle fulltime since the 1990s but go home to Honolulu, like last month, to relive the warm-water-life a few times a year with our 'Ohana (family) both here in Seattle and O'ahu. Considering your haole roots, you sure embraced the "Waterman" lifestyle well and know that those of us who happen to have that in our blood and also happen to do digital-visual media for a post-military career appreciate the quality of your lenswork and editing storytelling skills. Mahalo for the update an hey ... if you're ever our "TDY" in the Pacific NW, please holler at me. I'll take you yak-fishing for searun Coho Salmon or cutthroat trout in my tandem pelican if you are ever working cargo on a KSEA layover ... holler at me DM if you want to connect @TheImageArsenal . Aloha now and "Hanapa'a" to you fishing out there in the Gulf of Mexico .... Aloha, Antman (callsign)

As others have said, first one likely a king. They aren't too great to eat, but damn they fight hard. I caught a 45 incher in October using tackle slightly heavier than what you had. Some people use a 20 lb fluorocarbon leader with the lighter tackle, 30 lb mono seems to make a world of difference without reduction in bites. I'm a lifelong fisherman but just recently getting into saltwater kayak fishing. This is EXACTLY the kind of stuff I want to do more of- I'm usually on the Alabama gulf coast where the closest rig is about 3 miles out. I have a NuCanoe unlimited, great hull and comfortable, but doesn't have the mirage drive. I plan to get a hobie this spring. Want an outback, but am considering a pro angler 14 solely because of the integrated horizontal rod storage. I'm guessing you'd cast a vote for the outback for a trip like this?

I know you've connected with some TX BTB anglers already. I try to get down there at least 4 times a year from Austin. I'm running 3 AI's all setup to sail-troll. It's not that difficult really and sure beats the pedal when there's at least 8+ knts out there. I'm waiting to see a monster Cobia from you. Since you are so well acclimated to live lining that will produce you soon enough. I've got a busy Oct. ahead and I think the Oct. 1st weekend might be my last go at it this year. Oh, also I noticed you made it to the 5 mile rigs before sun-up, not a lot of guys I know launch pre-dawn :) As always, thanks for your videos.

You can contact me through Instagram or the gmail in the video description if you want to fish sometime. I have always liked the AI, I bet it’s mission getting out through surf. I just bought a stealth kayak for that reason. The conditions were dead flat or wouldn’t have attempted it on my outback lol. Hey Dan. I checked out the new movie, Avatar 2…The way of water. Anyway, I was taken by some of the inspired fantasy species. I forget what you called them in Hawaii, but common name Needlefish, with the extra boney like fin near the leading edge of bottom jaw. You may have called them Ahhhaa? Anyway, it strikes me there are fantasy fish in the movie most definitely inspired by real fish on this, our, planet. The manner in which the aforementioned Avatar species launches itself with the flapping of the tail fin being partially in the water, while flapping furiously to get & extend air time. I’ve watched actual Flying fish do same as no doubt you have too? I hope your training is going well and you’re not far off flying the Boeing.

Sorry you're here in Texas lol. Halfway joking. Actually, as a coast lover, I quite like the Texas coast as far as the 50 states go, as there are worse places you or I could be. There's only two states however that I'd absolutely trade coastlines with, 1. Hawaii and 2. Florida, and you had to leave one of them. Honorable mention to the west coast especially Cali, but cold water and fog isn't as enjoyable for me. Half of the east coast is way too cold too, and padre island southward would top the rest of the east coast except for Florida at least for what I like. Anyhow, welcome to Texas and hope you keep tight lines!
