I never thought of the second, lower shape. However, you ventured outside those shapes on occasion; what gives? Is there more connecting shapes that allowed you to do this easily, or is it simply knowing the major scale and fretboard within the key you’re playing? In other words, any hacks to allow one to venture outside the two shapes you illustrated? Thanks.

heya james, win here. as always i'll begin by saying thank you - for what you do and HOW you do it... you're the best guide out there in my opinion. your clarity and pertinence is for us folk wanting to get in on the rhythm, just the absolute best. thank you soo much. 🤘... ok, since both of my suggestions for songs to learn went up on the black board almost immediately let's see if my third suggestion is something you might consider. i'm really loving the driving bass punch in wilson picket's "land of a thousand dances"... that song is bad ass - 100%... what do you think? 🤔
