5 Minute Compost Bin - Composting for Beginners

If you have any interest in gardening, self-sufficiency, or food production, you should be composting. It's a great way to turn garbage into valuable fertilizer for your soil. You can buy fancy composting bins, or start a huge heap somewhere on your property, but you can also start small. I like these small containers because I can pick the whole thing up, shake it around, and eventually dump it right into my garden bed. It's easy to manage, and I can move it out of the way if I need to. There's not many wrong ways to compost; if you put compostable materials in some dirt, it will break down. Using a composting bin and following some basic guidelines, however, will speed the process up quite a bit. Dark containers work better, but you can use all sorts of bins, barrels, trash cans, etc. Plenty of people use old tires, stacked up atop on another. The compost bin you have is better than the compost bin you don't, so start small as long as you start!

Dont u gotta airrate it and flip it upside down once in a while and do a little dance and say shoobie doobie doobie to it everyday? So many other videos feel like theres so much tedious particulars that goes into composting. I sorta thought I could just throw some dirt, and yard waste and food scraps in a pile and call it good? Yea, as best as I can figure, all the elaborate stuff that other people do with their compost is pretty much in the effort of making it compost faster. I don't really need it fast. I need it lazy. And this method works well for those parameters.

It certainly can become much more complicated. But in the simplest terms: If you put vegetable scraps and such into a container, it's going to decompose. Heck, you can set it out on the driveway and it will eventually decompose. All the compost bin stuff is just to make that happen faster and more efficiently. Put it in a dark, moist container with a bit of dirt, and it will decompose somewhat quickly. All the extra complicated science that other people talk about are really about improving the efficiency and getting faster compost. But I load up my simple containers all spring, summer, and fall - and by the following spring most of it has fully composted and it's ready to go into the garden.

Like so many others I watched several videos and it seemed more steps than needed and didn't want to channel Bob Vila and build something (not yet, at least). Conversely, I *was not* going to spend $500+ to keep garbage on my kitchen counter. When you looked into the camera deadpan, I knew you meant business. Going to check out more of your channel 👍🏾

I just threw leaves and eggshells and scraps in a bin with the lid cracked open in my yard and then my ex put it in the garage. I see that it's broken down now. But I watched this in order to know how to do it right. It's definitely about in mine. But I will add some holes into the bottom and lid (I'll have to turn it on it's side to do so and then repeat on the other side. ) I'll also add some soil. But yay, now I know what to do without being overwhelmed.
